Jacket structures have many features as follows: a few foundation piles and reduction of site construction period caused by extremely high horizontal rigidity, moreover high manufacturing quality. In the construction of Tokyo International Airport Re-expansion Project, jacket substructures are applied to pile-elevated structures and connecting taxiways. This paper describes structural plan of marine bridges for airplanes, moreover applicability of jackets for substructures to marine bridges for airplanes.

A Cable-Reinforced Membrane Structures with Glulam Arches was constructed as the Hakuryu Dome in Daiwa-cho, Hiroshima Prefecture. This structure was realized by solving the following three issues.(1)Establisliment of methods of Cablenet design and construction(2)Development of Membrane joint detail which hides joint lines to show the roof as one Membrane(3)Establishment of design formula and construction method of Glued Laminated Timber joint, the Big Finger Joint, which doesn't use steel connections.This report describes the proposed design methods and the erection of the Hakuryu Dome.

It is an urgent issue to formulate a design method for concrete filled steel tubular structures against the long duration earthquake. This report shows the results of the study and research about the cyclic rotation capacity of the square concrete filled steel tubular columns against the long period ground motion. The experimental results by previous studies and this committee are introduced and the outlines of the fatigue properties of square CFT columns subjected to the axial force and cyclic lateral loading with constant deformation are given.

The 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake attacked Kobe on January 17, 1995 and brought us the huge destruction. At the IKUTA shrine, a lot of buildings were damaged and the Hall of Worship fell down completely. In the ruins, the superior priest of the shrine requested us to restore the buildings as soon as possible to encourage citizens of Kobe. Then reconstruction of the shrine started on January 22, 1995. The progressive technology to give the buildings sufficient seismic resistant capability is intended. For the columns of the new Hall of Worship, CFT(Concrete Filled steel Tube) is used, and the concrete which compressive strength is 160 NJmm2, is filled into the tube. The reconstruction procedure of the new Hall will be reported herein.

A design detail of beam-to-column connections is developed for previously proposed built-up column member comprising high-strength H-SA700 steel connecting to conventional-steel beams. In the design concept, the beams are allowed to develop plasticity during the large earthquakes, while the built-up column remains elastic. A bolted connection detail, consisting of steel end plates and high tension bolts, is adapted to connect the beams to the joints. Experiments were conducted to examine the seismic performance of the beam-to-column connections with the built-up column. Test results show that additional T-shape stiffeners were needed at the beam-to-column connections to provide appropriate rigidity of the joint to ensure the yielding of the beams.

This investigation is carried out to clear the difference of lateral stiffness of rahmen frame due to various methods for elastic rotation stiffness of steel exposed-type column base . At first, a new formula for elastic rotation stiffness of steel exposed-type column base considered column axial force and concrere stiffness under base-plate is suggested. It is compared and discussed that lateral stiffness of rahmen frame by nonlinear elastic analysis using the suggested formula compared with the result by conventional elastic analysis using the formula by Architectural Institute of Japan.

Various studies have been performed on improving fatigue strength of out-of-plane gusset welded joints because their fatigue strength is very low in the case of as-welded condition. Grinding the weld toes of the joints with burr grinder is the most common method for fatigue strength enhancement. In this study, for the purpose of sugesting appropriate grinding depth for out-of-plane gusset joints, fatigue tests and FEM analyses have been performed.

<p>The Matadi Bridge, a suspension bridge in Democratic Republic of Congo, was completed in May 1983 by the Japanese ODA. The inspection facilities such as the under girder inspection vehicles, the inside girder inspection vehicles, are equipped on this bridge. As the bridge have been opened to the public for nearly 30 years, these maintenance vehicles need to be improved because some deteriorations and the consequent problems have been found and reported by OEBK which maintains the bridge. JICA(Japan International Cooperation Agency) dispatched experts to solve these problems and repaired the inspection vehicles at the site in cooperation with OEBK. This paper reports the improvement activities done by JICA Study Team.</p>

下津井瀬戸大橋は瀬戸大橋の最も北側に位置する吊橋で、本州の倉敷市下津井とその南にある櫃石島(ひついしじま)とを結んでいる。下津井瀬戸大橋には、側径間端部で補剛桁を下から支え、鉛直反力を受け持つピボット構造のエンドリンク4基が設置されている。これらの内のA3エンドリンク(東西各1基、合計2基)ピボット構造部付近から、周辺民家(民家までL=約30m)でも容易に確認できるようなカンカンという大きな金属音が1993年6月頃より発生するようになった。この音の発生は、重量の大きな貨物列車が通過するときに顕著であった。そこで騒音を低減するための応急措置を施した後、1994年1月~2月にかけて、エンドリンクの精密点検を行い音源調査、ひずみ・変位調査等を現地に於いて実施した。'94年度には、騒音源と思われるピボット部へ潤滑剤を注入するための孔明け方法を検討するために模型実験を行った。また、ピボット部に注入すべき潤滑剤の選定を行った。これらの調査、実験の成果を用いて、'95年度にA3エンドリンクの補修工事を行い、騒音を解消することができた。また'96年度にはA4エンドリンクを同様の方法で補修した。ここでは、エンドリンクの精密点検及び補修工事について述べる。

In order to repair and retrofit the aged metal bridge, it is important to undestand the mechanical behavior of aged steel and replacement of rivet to H.T.B. In this study, firstly, tensile loading tests, chemical tests of aged steel are conducted to understand the basic property of aged steel. Secondly, tensile loading tests for multi-bolted joint are conducted to clarify replacement of rivet to H.T.B. In this study, three specimens are fabricated and tested; all riveted joint, partially H.T.B replaced, and, fully H.T.B replaced. Based on the test results, it is found that load carrying capacity and deformability of partially and fully replaced to H.T.B can be improved due to adding frictional resistance comparing with riveted joints only.

The roof frame of THE FUKUOKA EXIBITION HALL that images sea waves is composed by the large scaled steel latiticed vault and the steel trussed ribs which strengthen the vaulted shell and are utilized as maintenance roots and mechanical uses. Prestressing forces has been introduced to the edge beams of the steel vault to reduce vertical displacement. The designmethods for the metal prestressing shell structure adopted here, the effect of prestressing and the steel trussed ribs, and so on are presented in this paper.

Due to the Geiyo Earthquake in March 24th, 2001, center stay rods of the 1st Kurushimakaikyo Bridge(suspension bridge) were broken. They were designed to break in strong earthquake and work as safety valve of the structure. In order to evaluate the mechanism of the breakage of the rods, data from field measurement were processed using structural analysis, and it was confirmed that the broken rods worked as designed. It also was confirmed that forces acted to other unbroken rods in 2nd and 3rd Kurushimakaikyo Bridges were not large enough to affect their soundness. Through this experience, it was proven that field measurements and structural analysis can be effective tools not only for design but also for maintenance of structures.
