廃棄物発電プラントでは高効率, 低公害, メンテナンスフリーなどの性能向上を図る上で構成材料の高温腐食防止技術が鍵となっている. ごみの高カロリー化, 環境規制強化などの社会情勢変化に応じて腐食環境が過酷化し, 燃焼改善, 最適設計などによる腐食性の軽減がなされてきた. さらに, ボイラ蒸発管を主体に金属溶射, 溶接肉盛などの耐食コーティングを用いた寿命向上技術が開発, 適用され, また, 過熱器においても310系ステンレス鋼, 高Cr高Mo・Niベース合金管の利用と腐食メカニズムの解明により, 現在では673K/3.9MPaを超える蒸気条件が可能となっている. 本解説ではおよそ30年にわたる廃棄物発電プラントの腐食防止および耐食材料に関連した主な実用技術の開発と今後の課題について説明する.

Protection of carbon steel (C-steel) from atmospheric corrosion by TiO2 coating was demonstrated. TiO2 coating, as a non-sacrificial anode, absorbed solar energy and transformed it to electricity so as to provide cathodic protection to the substrate steel. A TiO2-Fe galvanic couple was developed as an ACM (atmospheric corrosion monitor) sensor to evaluate the photoeffect and corrosion behavior of TiO2/C-steel in atmosphere. For the TiO2-Fe couple, type 1 sensor, an anodic output related to the anodic dissolution of the coupled Fe electrode was detected in the dark (night time), whereas in the bright (day time) the output changed from anodic to cathodic. Moreover, the cathodic output remained for a long time after stopping illumination for the multi-layer coating, TiO2 (amorphous)/TiO2 (anatase)/Ti-Fe oxide/α-Fe2O3/C-steel, type 2 sensor. Enviromental conditions in terms of relative humidity, RH, and amount of deposited sea salt, Ws, where 1mm wide Fe coupled to 5mm wide TiO2 could be protected were determined based on the following examinations:a) visual observation for degree of rust developed on the Fe electrodes, for the type 2 sensorb) comparison of corrosion potential of carbon steel with photo potential of TiO2 electrode measured by Kelvin probe, c) polarity of output current for the type 1 sensor.It is concluded that the carbon steel could be protected from atmospheric corrosion by TiO2 coating under conditions of lower amount of deposited sea salt and lower relative humidities.

As you know well, the kinds of organic solvent cleaning are various available and petroleum solvent cleaning, non-petroleum solvent cleaning, finger print removing and vapour degreasing are very popular methods. But, recently environmental contamination is very severe for restriction due to destroy of ozone by fron, etc. Therefore, this is mentioned for details of kinds for organic solvent cleaning and prevention of environmental contaminations.

This review describes current trend in research and development of a slight degree of corrosion of stainless steel for semiconductor processing. Although organic materials such as polyvinyl chloride have been used for ultra-pure water piping in semiconductor processing, it has been pointed out that there are several problems of impurities release from the piping surface, insufficiency of heatproofing in heat-sterilizing etc. It has been reported that the amount of metal dissolution from electro-polished stainless steel in ultra-pure water was very small, and that controlled oxidation treatment after electropolishing gave more excellent corrosion resistance. On the other hand, the electropolished stainless steel pipe are used mainly for gas piping in semiconductor processing. However, it is reported that it is subject to a slight degree of corrosion in corrosive chlorine gas and other halogen gases. Moreover, it is proved that the corrosion resistance in halogen gases is improved by controlling the heat treatment condition of oxygen partial pressure and other factors, and the pre-heating suface polishing methods.

The quantitative evaluation of tarnish of stainless steel was carried out using cyclic corrosion test (CCT) and computer image analysis. Test samples were austenitic stainless steels which contained 10-18wt%Cr and had various roughness of surface. Effect of surface finish on tarnish has been studied, and main results are as follows. Total area of tarnish (AR) after CCT depends on Cr concentration in passive film and roughness of surface. AR increases with decreasing of the former and with increasing of the latter. Among conventional surface finishes such as 2B, HL, BA and Miller of stainless steel Type 304, sample of 2B-finished indicates the worst resistance against tarnish after CCT. Compared with the resistance against tarnish of another sample which has the same Cr concentration in passive film and roughness of surface, sample of 2B-finished indicates worse resistance. This result could be persuaded by the fact that sample of 2B-finished has the intergranular corrosion at the grainboundary on the surface because of the pickling treatment in the surface finish process.

Potential ennoblement for stainless steel in natural seawater was analyzed. Open circuit potentials (OCPs) of platinum, gold, palladium, chromium, titanium and nickel ennobled in natural seawater as well as stainless steel, SUS 304 (18Cr-8Ni). Potential ennoblement is not a specific event to only stainless steel. Marine biofilm clearly caused potential ennoblement. Cathodic polarization curves for the ennobled stainless steel elucidated that there were two distinct reduction current increases. One is the limited diffusion current of dissolved oxygen reduction below -500mV vs. Ag/AgCl (KClsat). The other reduction current around 0mV vs. Ag/AgCl (KClsat) was considered to be hydrogen peroxide reduction current in acidic condition. Synergistic effect of hydrogen peroxide and low pH in artificial seawater carried out high OCP of stainless steel like that in natural seawater. Therefore, we concluded that synergistic effect of hydrogen peroxide production and low pH by marine microorganisms is possible cause for potential ennoblement in natural seawater.

The practical treatments of environment conditioning and inhibitors for corrosion controlling are described. It is in principle possible to prevent corrosion by the removal of corrosive agents or by the addition of inhibitive agents. Desicants are used to reduce relative humidity which is the most important factor of corrosion in gas phase. In aqueous systems the environments can be made less aggressive by removal of dissolved oxygen, adjustment of pH, or deionization. Inhibitors are classified as volatile, water soluble, or oil soluble. Environment controls to reduce corrosion in boiler water systems, cooling water systems, and petroleum refining processes are also given.

Wood has been one of most useful materials and resources as well as metal, stone, clay and etc. since the ancient times. However it has the defects of its own qualities, one of them is well-known “wood decay”. So called “wood decay” is not merely physical or chemical degradation but a bio-deterioration caused by wood destroying fungi. Wood preservation is the most available techenology to protect wooden materials from decay.

Kraft papers containing various amounts of Cl- and H+ were prepared in laboratry. A piece of the papers was put between two pieces of mild steel and the corrosive was tested under 40°C, 90% R. H. and room temperature. Corrosive action was evaluated by the measurement of rust degree of iron and steel specified by Japanese Industrial Specification.Results obtained were as follows:1) The allowable limit of Cl- is about 0.4mg per 1g of material and beyond the limit, a proportional relation between Cl- concentration and R was established, where R is rust degree of mild steel.2) The allowable limit of H+ concentration is approx. 6 in pH and in acid range, log R is proportional to pH value.

Initial oxide films formed on electrodeposited zinc (EG) and zinc-iron alloy (Zn-7 mass% Fe) coatings and zinc-iron alloy coating produced by thermal alloying of zinc electroplated steel (EGA) were analyzed using AES, XPS and TEM in order to elucidate electrochemical behavior of the zinc and zinc-iron alloy coatings. The outmost layer of oxide film for EG and EGA was composed of Zn(OH)2 and adsorbed H2O, and that for Zn-7 mass% Fe of Zn(OH)2, a small amount of Fe and adsorbed H2O. The inner layer of oxide film was composed of the following; predominantly ZnO for EG, predominantly amorphous Zn-(OH)2 and a small amount of Fe for Zn-7 mass% Fe, and predominantly ZnO and a small amount of Fe for EGA. The chemical state of Fe in the film could not be determined, but Fe is presumably oxidized. The suppression of oxygen reduction reaction on Zn-7 mass% Fe coating was considered to result from barrier effect against electron transfer in insulating Zn(OH)2 uniformly formed on the coating. The suppression action does not occur on EG and EGA coatings because of the formation of n-type semiconductive ZnO on the coatings.

Rapid corrosion of buried utility pipes for buildings is caused by macro-cells, most of which are formed between the pipes (anode) and rebars in concrete (cathode).Usually, installing insulating coupling would get good result, but if there is a liquid having electrical conductivity, jumping current must be treated.The jumping current could be treated by extending insulating length of insulating coupling.But some special case a Steel Earth would be needed for the treatment.

Low-alloy weathering steels resistant to SOx pollution show poor performance in environments where airborne salinity is high. Recent researches on rust and weathering steels, therefore, have been focused on the rusting mechanism in the presence of chloride and development of new steels and coatings for the use in marine/coastal environments. In the paper discussion and literature review are given for the following subjects: 1) tolerable limit of airborne salinity level for the use of uncoated weathering steels in infrastructure, 2) related case study of flake rusting on bridges in coastal area, 3) thermochemical aspect of rusting in chloride environments, 4) crystal structure of iron rust in high salinity, 4) electrochemical reaction of rust and its catalytic properties in chloride media, 5) protective nature of rust of weathering steels, and 6) quality evaluation (or stabilization) of rust on weathering steels.

Port authorities are interested in the behavior of the civil engineering elements of port infrastructure, particularly with respect to the financial, technical, safety and environmental decisions to be taken during the life-time of the structures. It therefore follows that to avoid unexpected large-scale rehabilitation measures as a consequence of neglected periodic maintenance, a systematical planning and budgeting of maintenance activities is necessary. Life Cycle Management (LCM), and its precursor Whole Life Costing (WLC), will contribute to a realistic approach of maintenance policy, including decision-making, planning, budgeting and funding of inspection and repair activities during the life-time of port structures.PIANC PTC-II Working Group 31 (WG31) was constituted in 1993 to review and offer guidance on the use of LCM for new and existing structures in ports and published the LCM Report in 1998. In accordance with the LCM Report, the significance and outline of LCM, the outline and example of WLC and the case study of LCM are presented.
