A species of cyclopoid copepod Anthessius cucullatus Lee and Kim, 2021 (Anthessiidae) is newly recorded based on both sexes collected from three species of the sea slug genus Aplysia Linnaeus, 1767, i.e., Ap. dactylomela Rang, 1828, Ap. juliana Quoy and Gaimard, 1832, and Ap. kurodai Baba, 1937, from coastal waters of Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Japan. The copepod is characterized by having the following characters in the female: 1) the genital double somite covered with a hood-like dorsal lobe; 2) the antenna with four unequal claws and three setae at the distal tip; 3) the maxilla has a spinulose basal lobe; 4) leg 5 with irregular marginal rows of spinules. Furthermore, the male has 5) the third endopodal segment of leg 4 bearing a curved third inner spine. The findings of An. cucullatus in this study represent the second record of the copepod from all around the world as well as the first record from Japanese waters with the detailed description of the morphological characters based on the specimens. Aplysia dactylomela and Ap. juliana are new host records of the copepod.

An ovigerous female of a fish ectoparasite Argulus caecus C. B. Wilson, 1922 was collected from a squid, probably Todarodes pacificus (Steenstrup, 1880), from a fixed net installed in Otsuchi Bay, an inlet of the northwestern Pacific Ocean, Iwate Prefecture, northen Japan. Since the original description of A. caecus was insufficient, this paper reports on the morphology of the species based on a detailed examination of the female. In particular, the first and second antennae, the first and second maxillae, and four pairs of legs, whose features were poorly known, are reported in detail. The specimen of A. caecus is inferred to have detached itself and moved from a fish host, perhaps a coastal puffer, to the squid while these two animals were trapped in the net or when they were removed from the net. Following Argulus scutiformis Thiele, 1900, A. caecus is the second species of Argulus found from northern Japan located in the northern temperate or subarctic region, and its occurrence in this region is likely to be affected by the Tsushima Warm Current and its branch, the Tsugaru Warm Current, both of which flow off the coast of the region.

Three infaunal apodid sea cucumbers collected in Kushimoto, Shirahama, and Susami, in the southern coast of Wakayama, Japan are described. They have different morphological characteristics in body color, ossicle arrangement, and internal organs, each other. First species, animal displays a large body size (approximately 70–150 mm) and pale body color (semi-transparent pink with anterior tip brownish) was found out. Second species, animal displays a small body size (approximately 20 mm) and pale body color (transparent yellow) with whitish wheel-papillae on three dorsal interradii was found out. Third species, animal displays a moderate body size (approximately 20–35 mm) and deep red or reddish brown body color with dark yellowish wheel-papillae on three dorsal interradii was found out. All three species having 10 tentacles, sigmoid-hook ossicles, and wheel ossicles in their body wall, turned out to be belonging to the genus Taeniogyrus Semper, 1867, and new to science.

The sea anemone Capnea japonica (Carlgren, 1940) was described based on two specimens collected in 1914 off the coast of Misaki, Sagami Bay, Japan. Besides the two syntypes, no further specimens are known to have been collected. The original description of C. japonica is brief, and, therefore it is difficult to identify the species based on the available information. In 2014, we collected a single specimen of Capnea Gosse, 1860 from around the type locality of C. japonica and examined its morphological characters, such as the external features, cnidome, and musculature, and then compared it with the syntypes of C. japonica. The characteristic form of tentacles, size and distribution of cnidae, and very strong sphincter muscle in our specimen were a good match to the original description and to the results of examining the syntypes. Based on the topotype and syntypes, we redescribe C. japonica and show its phylogenetic position with newly obtained DNA sequencing data.

We describe a new capitellid species, Mastobranchus uru sp. nov., from a tidal flat on Iriomote Island, Okinawa, southern Japan. This species differs from its three congeners in having capillary chaetae only on the notopodia in chaetiger 1 and in the number and arrangement of teeth on hooks. We also provide for this new species a barcode nucleotide sequence from the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene.

Both adult females and males of Argulus mongolianus Tokioka, 1939 were collected from the buccal cavity wall and body surface of freshwater fishes in Lake Izunuma and Lake Uchinuma, Miyagi Prefecture, northen Honshu, Japan. The original description of the species was insufficient, based on a single female from Inner Mongolia, China, and no further description has been made to date. Thus, this paper redescribes A. mongolianus based on the newly-collected specimens, including the first description of the male. This represents the first record of A. mongolianus from Japan. The infected fishes were largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (Lacepède, 1802), common carp, Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758, Japanese white crucian carp, Carassius cuvieri Temminck and Schlegel, 1846, and silver crucian carp, Carassius sp. The three species other than common carp are new host records for A. mongolianus. This parasite was most probably introduced with an unspecified freshwater fish from China into Japan.

We describe a new species of the rare and deep-sea family Myxasteridae from Japanese waters. This is the first record of this family in the western North Pacific. The new species, Asthenactis agni n. sp., differs from all congeners in having seven arms with an R/r ratio of 7.2, primary radial plates with convex distal edges, and two to three actinolateral spines that are up to 4.7 mm long.

Caprella nojimaensis sp. nov. (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Caprellidae), inhabiting the gorgonian Calcigorgia gracilis Matsumoto, van Ofwegen, and Bayer, 2019, is described based on a specimen from 1497 m depth in the Nojima Submarine Canyon, off Boso Peninsula, central Japan. The species is closely related to C. gracillima Mayer, 1890, but differs from the latter in gnathopod 2 being positioned near the anterior margin of pereonite 2 and in the presence of paired small mid-dorsal projections on pereonites 2 and 5. The body colour of live material is pale pink, with mouth parts and gnathopod 2 fringed with darker pink, revealing protective colouration that matches that of the host gorgonian. The clinging behaviour in situ is “upright” as recorded by the remotely operated vehicle Hyper-Dolphin, and the presence of dense swimming setae on antenna 2 suggests that the caprellid feeds by filtering material suspended in the bathyal zone.

Two specimens of Ophiopsila cf. polyacantha H. L. Clark, 1915 are described from approximately 15 m water depth at Kakeromajima island, Amami Islands in southwestern Japan. The species occurs on sandy bottoms with the disc buried and the arms extended above the substratum. Bioluminescence and burrowing behavior are described. The specimens are clearly morphologically different from the two species of Ophiopsila Forbes, 1843 previously recorded from Japan. The new Japanese name “Kin-habu-toranoo-kumohitode” is proposed.

We report the first record of the ammotheid pycnogonid species Hemichela nanhaiensis Wang et al., 2015, from Japanese waters. Four specimens of H. nanhaiensis were collected from the East China Sea at depths of 405–635 m, including the first females ever found. We redescribe male and female H. nanhaiensis from these specimens. We found that H. nanhaiensis is sexually dimorphic in the number of tiny lateral outgrowths on the lateral processes; length of the lateral process tubercles and oviger articles 4 and 5; ratio of the terminal claw to article 10 in the oviger; presence or absence of a proximal reversed spine on oviger article 5; thickness of the leg femur; and number of gonopores.

Microcotyle pacinkar n. sp. (Monogenea: Microcotylidae) is described from the gills of Sebastes taczanowskii Steindachner, 1880 (Scorpionfishes: Sebastidae) (Japanese name: Ezo-mebaru) collected from off Usujiri in Hokkaido, northern Japan in the North Pacific Ocean. The new species is morphologically most similar to M. ditrematis Yamaguti, 1940 in having an elongated body and an inverted pear-shaped genital atrium but differs from the congener in the arrangement of the spines in the genital atrium and the shapes of the anterolateral sclerites of the clamps. The phylogenetic trees for species of Microcotyle van Beneden and Hesse, 1863 based on the partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I region were estimated using new sequences of M. pacinkar n. sp.; the new species formed a sister group with M. sebastis Goto, 1894.

A single specimen of apogonid fish, Pristiapogon taeniopterus (Bennett, 1836) (Actinopteri: Kurtiformes) previously reported from Micronesia, Polynesia, Melanesia, the Hawaiian Islands, Madagascar and Indian Ocean, was recently caught at Minamidaito Island, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. This specimen is the first record of the species from the Northwest Pacific including Japan and is now the most northerly record. Pristiapogon taeniopterus differs from its congeners in having developed gill rakers 15–17; circumpeduncular scales 15–18; upper-jaw length 17.9–21.5% SL; distinct dark stripes on both dorsal, anal and both lobes of caudal fin; dark vertical bar posterior to the base of caudal fin incompletely developed or interrupted at the central portion of the fin; dark band or blotch on posterior part of caudal peduncle just anterior to caudal-fin base; and pectoral-fin rays usually 13. The new standard Japanese name “Sumihiki-ishimochi” is proposed for the species.

A subterranean millipede species, Antrokoreana gujoensis Masuda, 2010, is redescribed based on specimens newly collected around its type locality, in the limestone area of Mino Terrane on Honshu Island, Japan. Males of A. gujoensis were originally described as having no penes, but nonetheless, the examined specimens clearly demonstrate that this species possesses the penes behind leg-pair 2. An emended diagnosis of this species and a key to all eight currently recognized species of Antrokoreana is provided.

A giant phyllosoma larva, assigned to the final stage, was collected from off Peru. This specimen was determined to be Projasus bahamondei George, 1976 by DNA barcoding, and morphological description was given for the first time in the genus Projasus George and Grindley, 1964. The present phyllosoma was characteristic of having very wide cephalic shield (about 2.3 times of thorax width), median rostrum, eminent setose exopods on the second and third maxillipeds, and five stout spines on basial endite of maxillule. Projasus phyllosoma has morphological characteristics of both ‘Silentes’ and ‘Stridentes’ groups in the family Palinuridae.

Gemmaecaputia corrugata Tripathi, 1959 (Monogenea: Chauhaneidae), the type-species of Gemmaecaputia Tripathi, 1959, is redescribed from the gills of Sphyraena forsteri Cuvier, 1829 (Sphyraenidae) off Yomitan Town, Okinawa-jima island, Southern Japan, as a new country record. Sphyraena forsteri represents a new host record for this monogenean. The cox1 phylogenetic tree showed that G. corrugata and Pseudochauhanea macrorchis Lin, Liu, and Zhang, 2001 (Chauhaneidae) formed a sister group, but the 28S rDNA phylogenetic tree indicates that G. corrugata is nested in a clade comprised of Chauhaneidae and Protomicrocotylidae.

Members of the family Flabelligeridae are distributed worldwide, inhabiting the underside of rocks or within mixed sand sediments. Some genera of the family have gelatinous tunics with hooked chaetae. The genus Flabelligera Sars, 1829 is one of the members of the gelatinous free-living groups of Flabelligeridae. A fan-shaped cephalic cage, thick gelatinous tunic, and hooked neurohooks distinguish members of this genus. In Japan, Flabelligera affinis Sars, 1829 [Japanese name: Kanten-habouki] has been known as the sole Japanese species of Flabelligera inhabiting several locations. We reviewed Japanese species of Flabelligera from several sites from Hokkaido to Honshu and concluded that the Japanese “F. affinis” contained at least five different species under the specific name. In this study, we described them as five new species. All new species were collected from the underside of rocks in shallow to deep-sea depths. We have also provided mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences for DNA barcodes of the new species.

Canthidermis macrolepis (Boulenger, 1888) is newly recorded from Japan and Micronesia on the basis of nine specimens (206.9–349.8 mm SL), having been previously reported from the northwestern Indian Ocean and northern South China Sea (the latter based solely on DNA barcoding). The species is probably widespread throughout the Indo-West Pacific region but has been confused with Canthidermis maculata (Bloch, 1786). Detailed morphological comparisons of both species resulted in the following differences being recognized between them: numbers of body scale rows [38–41 (modally 40) in C. macrolepis vs. 40–49 (44) in C. maculata], second dorsal-fin rays [25–27 (26) vs. 22–26 (24)], anal-fin rays [22–24 (23) vs. 20–23 (21)] and pectoral-fin rays [14–16 (15) vs. 13–15 (14)]. Sequences of the mitochondrial DNA COI gene determined from the presently-reported specimens of C. macrolepis, which also differed in color from similarly sized C. maculata, having a uniformly grayish body without spots, were also compared with congeners. The Japanese standard name “Bouzu-mongara” is newly proposed for C. macrolepis.

Acoetid polychaetes were collected from shallow waters off Kochi Prefecture and Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. The specimens could be assigned to the genus Polyodontes Blainville, 1828, but are different from all the known species of the genus by the following characters: ommatophores with short neck; palps with minute papillae; parapodia without branchiae; the acicular neurochaetae always lacking aristae and having hairs only on a small area of their subdistal end; and antennae with brown dots. They are herein morphologically described as a new species and a partial 658-bp COI sequence as a DNA barcode is provided for future taxonomic studies.
