Two specimens (68.8–72.3 mm standard length) of Ostorhinchus chrysotaenia (Bleeker, 1851), previously recorded from Indonesia, northwestern Australia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, northern Borneo, Philippines, and Taiwan, and recently collected off Yaku Island, Osumi Islands, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, represent the first records of the species from Japan supported by voucher specimens, and the northernmost distributional record of the species. The holotype and an additional non-type specimen of O. chrysotaenia were determined from two Bleeker specimens registered under the same catalog number.

A single specimen of Muraenichthys gymnopterus (Bleeker, 1853) was collected from a sandy intertidal flat having rocks and dead corals in the estuarine area of Nagura Amparu, Ishigaki-jima Island, southern Japan, in October 2020. This specimen collection constitutes the first record of M. gymnopterus from Japanese waters. In this study, the diagnostic characters between M. gymnopterus and M. hattae Jordan and Snyder, 1901 are provided, based on our morphological observations of 37 specimens, including Okinawan specimen, and previous studies, as follows: head length [M. gymnopterus 11.8–15.0% of total length (TL) vs. M. hattae 9.4–11.0%], trunk length (24–25.4% of TL vs. 28–31%), the horizontal distance from the dorsal-fin origin to a vertical line through the anus 73–87% of head length vs. 13–49%), the number of vertebrae (total 129–130 vs. 148–155; predorsal 30 vs. 47–53; preanal 41–44 vs. 51–55), the number of the lateral-line pores before the anus (43–45 vs. 51–55). Additionally, the body depth at the gill opening in TL and the trunk length in TL can also be used to distinguish between these two species (2.8–3.7% of TL vs. 1.4–3.0%). Although M. gymnopterus has previously been reported from tropical to temperate regions, we suspect that the records from temperate regions are based on misidentification of M. hattae.

A new species of pseudocrangonyctid amphipod, Pseudocrangonyx uenoi, is described from cave streams in Taga town, central Honshu, Japan. Previous molecular phylogenetic studies reported the taxonomic status of the Taga populations of Pseudocrangonyx as an undescribed species. We present the diagnostic features to discriminate P. uenoi from the other congeners on the basis of morphological study. Pseudocrangonyx uenoi is closely related to P. daejeonensis Lee, Tomikawa, Nakano, and Min, 2018, but clearly distinguished from the latter by the presence of calceoli on female antenna 2, the 5-dentate lacinia mobilis of the left mandible, setation of the peduncular articles of pleopods, the number of articles of rami of the pleopods, a shorter terminal article of uropod 3, and a telson with a deeper cleft.

An old museum specimen of the rare deep-sea species Ophichthus exourus McCosker, 1999 (Anguilliformes: Ophichthidae) (685 mm in total length) collected near Saipan and a recently collected example from Okinawa, Japan (634 mm in total length) represent the first Northern Hemisphere records of the species, previously known only from the southwestern Pacific in waters off New Caledonia and Fiji, but now believed to be widely distributed in the western Pacific Ocean. A detailed morphological observation based on the above specimens and a re-examination of the holotype resulted in a revision of some species characteristics, including the number of infraorbital pores. Ophichthus exourus is distinguished from other congeners by the following combination of characters: head 8.3–10.0% of total length; upper jaw 36.1–38.1% of head length; pectoral-fin rounded, length 19.2–24.1% of head length; rear margin of eye above or slightly behind rictus; eye diameter 44.4–61.2% of snout length; horizontal length of posterior nostril dermal flap much greater than diameter of anterior nostril tube; gill opening to dorsal-fin origin greater than twice pectoral-fin length; preopercular pores 2; predorsal and total vertebrae 20–21 and 173–177, respectively; lower-jaw teeth nearly uniserial; body without bands or spots; posteriormost portion (much shorter than head length) of anal-fin membrane indistinct darkish brown. A new standard Japanese name “Gunbai-umihebi” is proposed for the species.

A new species of hesionid polychaetes, Leocratides kimuraorum sp. nov., is described based on material collected from the Shima Peninsula and Sagami Bay (middle Honshu, Japan), as well as museum specimens collected from Sagami Bay, Suruga Bay, and Shirahama. Leocratides kimuraorum sp. nov. is the third species in this genus and can be discriminated from the two congeners, L. filamentosus Ehlers, 1908 and L. ehlersi (Horst, 1921), by i) the length of the antennae, which are as long as palps, ii) the presence of pharyngeal terminal papillae, and iii) the absence of a papillose peristomial membrane. On the other hand, L. filamentosus, originally described from off Western Sumatra, Indonesia, was also collected from Sagami Bay, and represents a new record of this species for Japanese waters. Partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequences from the holotype of L. kimuraorum sp. nov. and newly collected specimen of L. filamentosus are provided for reliable species identification in the future.

In this study we describe one new species of Dactylogyrus Diesing, 1850 and three new species of Bivaginogyrus Gussev and Gerasev in Gussev, 1985 (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) from two freshwater fishes Gnathopogon elongatus elongatus (Temminck and Schlegel, 1846) and G. caerulescens (Sauvage, 1883) (Cypriniformes: Gobionidae) endemic to Japan. Further, G. elongatus is a new host record for Paradiplozoon skrjabini Achmerov, 1974 (Monogenea: Diplozoidae). Dactylogyrus tamoroko n. sp. is most similar to D. chenjiagengi Zhang in Zhang, Zhou, and Wen, 1990, D. clypeatus Gussev, 1955, and D. gnathopogonis Yamaguti, 1963; it differs from these three congeners by the bifurcate base of the accessory piece. Bivaginogyrus japonicus n. sp. is close to D. polylepidis Alvarez Pellitero, Simon Vicente, and Gonzalez Lanza, 1981, but it can be separated from the latter species based on its uniform-sized marginal hooks. The new species was connected to the cartilage tissue of the gill using filament-like structures, which are assumed to be derived from secretions of the reservoirs associated with each marginal hook. Bivaginogyrus cingulatus n. sp. resembles D. navicularis Gussev, 1955, D. trullaeformis Gussev, 1955, and D. imberbis Wu and Wang, 1983, but the new species is distinguished from these three species by having its inconspicuous outer roots. Bivaginogyrus exiguus n. sp. is comparable to D. pandus Wu and Wang, 1983 and D. colpodes Wu, Wang, and Song, 1983, but differs from these two species in having a shorter penis. Molecular phylogenetic analysis indicates that Bivaginogyrus is a paraphyletic group and shows affinity to “Dactylogyrus” species parasitic on gobionid fishes. However, most of those closely related Dactylogyrus species are yet to be described for their internal morphology and should accordingly be redescribed. The three new species of Bivaginogyrus are assumed to have been co-introduced along with G. e. elongatus into non-native regions of this host.

Two specimens of the carangid fish Scomberoides tala (Cuvier, 1832) (141.5–411.0 mm in standard length, 151.9–433.0 mm in fork length), collected from northern Miyazaki Prefecture and the Yaeyama Islands, southern Japan, represent the first specimen-supported Japanese records and northernmost record of the species, previously recorded from the east coast of South Africa, Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Indo-Australian Archipelago, Australia, Gulf of Thailand, and South China Sea. In addition, the distribution of S. tala in Japanese waters was assessed on the basis of a previous photographic record, and the Japanese name for the species was discussed.

An ovigerous female of the rare cymothoid isopod, Elthusa splendida (Sadowsky and Moreira, 1981) was discovered in a museum specimen of Japanese spurdog Squalus japonicus Ishikawa, 1908 collected from the East China Sea. This cymothoid species was previously known only from the type locality, off southern Brazil, the western South Atlantic. Therefore, the new record in the East China Sea represents the almost maximum distribution range extension on the earth (i.e., the antipodes). In addition, the present female is the largest specimen of this species on record (57.9 mm in total length). We described the East China Sea specimen along with verification of the presence of four pits on pereonite 1, an important diagnostic character of the species, using a 3D measurement system.

While examining specimens identified as Paracaristius maderensis (Maul, 1949) at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Marine Vertebrate Collection, we encountered an individual of the genus Platyberyx Zugmayer, 1911. This specimen was collected in the Central Pacific Ocean, 900 km east of Wake Atoll during the Naga Expedition 1959–1961. We identified the specimen as Platyberyx rhyton Stevenson and Kenaley, 2013, and it represents the first record of this species outside of Japanese waters. This is a range extension of around 3400 km east for this species, as well as the first record of a juvenile individual and the fourth record of the species overall. We provide a morphological description and comparisons to the three previously known adult specimens.

Two large (ca. 0.5 mm long), rare, and probably closely related species of Facetotecta (y-larvae), Hansenocaris cristalabri sp. nov. and Hansenocaris aquila sp. nov., are described on the basis of last-stage lecithotrophic nauplii reared from plankton at Sesoko Island, Okinawa, Japan. The two species resemble each other in having a labrum with a row of spines and a long, attenuate trunk region that terminates in a long, heavily spinose dorsocaudal spine. The labrum of H. cristalabri sp. nov. has an enormous, cockscomb-like ventral process that bears a row of distally directed, dagger-like spines along its anterior side, while the spine-bearing keel of the labrum of H. aquila sp. nov. extends posteriorly into a robust, eagle-like beak. The labral “crest” of H. cristalabri sp. nov. has no equivalent in any other described y-larva, nor in any other crustacean nauplius; its possible functions are discussed. Another diagnostic feature of H. cristalabri sp. nov., absent in H. aquila sp. nov., is a pair of shallow, rounded notches bounded by sharp spinules on the far posteriolateral margins of the cephalic shield. Both new species have longitudinal spine rows on the trunk dorsum, two rows in H. cristalabri sp. nov. and four in H. aquila sp. nov., something not previously documented for y-nauplii. The plate arrangement of the cephalic shield in H. cristalabri sp. nov. is described in detail, with an attempt to homologize the pattern with that of other y-nauplii (especially Hansenocaris furcifera Itô, 1989). The body surface of H. cristalabri sp. nov. has fewer setae and pores than any other late- or last-stage facetotectan nauplius described to date, suggesting paedomorphic development. A formal diagnosis is presented for the family-group taxon Hansenocarididae fam. nov.; this name, while already in use, has until now been nomenclaturally unavailable.

Members of the family Haloclavidae, belonging to the order Actiniaria, are characterized by the presence of a large siphonoglyph next to their actinopharynx and an aboral end without a basal disc. Members of the genus Haloclava Verrill, 1899 have been reported primarily from Europe and America, and have not yet been described from Japanese waters based on the collected specimen. In this study, I describe a new species, Haloclava hercules sp. nov., from the Pacific coast of Japan. This new species is chiefly characterized by cudgel-like blunt massive tentacles with knob-like acrospheres in the outer tentacular cycle and gigantic basitrichs over 250 µm in length, which are the largest known from sea anemones.

Three forms of Japanese Eudigraphis (Penicillata, Polyxenidae), which have long been treated as subspecies of Eudigraphis takakuwai (Miyosi, 1947), i.e., E. t. takakuwai (Miyosi, 1947), E. t. nigricans (Miyosi, 1947), and E. t. kinutensis (Haga, 1950), are raised here to three distinct species. Overlap of their distributional ranges over wide areas of Japan was confirmed, and molecular phylogeny using both nuclear (ITS2) and mitochondrial (COI) DNA testified monophyly of each of the three forms. Additionally, the three forms can be easily distinguished from one another by body size, coloration, and habitat, though species identification for the specimens preserved in ethanol is often difficult due to their morphological similarity other than coloration and size. Description of some so-far neglected morphological characters were provided with some SEM photos to supplement knowledge on taxonomy and morphology of the family.

A taxonomic review of Albula Scopoli, 1777 (Albuliformes: Albulidae) in Japanese and adjacent waters, based on morphology and mtDNA cytochrome b sequence data, resulted in the recognition of four species: Albula argentea (Forster, 1801), Albula glossodonta (Forsskål, 1775), Albula koreana Kwun and Kim, 2011, and Albula oligolepis Hidaka, Iwatsuki, and Randall, 2008. Although Japanese ichthyologists have long considered A. glossodonta and a second Albula species (referred to by the Japanese name “Sotoiwashi”) to be distributed in Japanese waters, the latter having been reported as A. koreana or Albula sp. in recent literature, the present study revealed that, in fact, “Sotoiwashi” included three species, viz., A. argentea, A. koreana and A. oligolepis. Examined specimens of the latter three species represent the first reliable records of all three from Japanese waters, with comparative specimens of A. koreana from Vietnam and Malaysia also representing distributional range extensions (formerly known only from Korea and Taiwan). Albula koreana is readily distinguished from Japanese congeners by the striking yellow stripe on the cheek (just behind the mouth) in the former, a large dark blotch in front of the nostril, a dark oval blotch under an arc-shaped dark band on the snout tip, and greater numbers of body scales and vertebrae. As has been previously demonstrated, A. argentea and A. oligolepis are distinguished by pored lateral-line scale numbers (68–74 in the former vs. 61–67 in the latter) and total vertebrae (68–75 vs. 64–70). Updated distributional information shows A. argentea to be distributed from Indonesia east to French Polynesia, and north to Japan and Korea (there being no reliable records from Sri Lanka, Madagascar or the Hawaiian Islands); A. koreana in waters off Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam and Malaysia (east coast of Malay Peninsula); and A. oligolepis from the east coast of Africa to the Coral Sea, and north to Japan.

Argulus coregoni Thorell, 1864 was collected from white-spotted char, Salvelinus leucomaenis (Pallas, 1814), red-spotted masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae Jordan and McGregor, 1925, masu salmon, O. m. masou (Brevoort, 1856), and a hybrid between white-spotted char and masu salmon in mountain streams, Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. The host’s body surface under and near the pectoral fins was the most common infection site for A. coregoni. The infected white-spotted char were caught at high elevations (461–873 m) in the headwater streams. The infected individuals of the two masu salmon subspecies were mostly caught in the upper river reaches, but the elevations where they were caught were lower (237–733 m and 660–707 m, respectively) than those of the white-spotted char. Since A. coregoni is also known as a parasite of ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis (Temminck and Schlegel, 1846), in the middle and lower river reaches in the prefecture, this parasite utilizes different fish species as its hosts along a river course: white-spotted char and the two masu salmon subspecies serve as the hosts, respectively, in the headwater and the middle to lower sections of the upper reaches, but in the mid- and lower river reaches, ayu is the important host.

Difflugia biwae Kawamura, 1918 has been redescribed. Here, the neotype of D. biwae, which was newly collected from its type locality, Lake Biwa, is designated to the species to clarify its taxonomic status. Morphometric characterization of D. biwae was performed. A statistically significant correlation between body length and shell collar diameter was identified in the population of the Lake Biwa, but this correlation was not significant in the population from the Mulan Lake. The PCA scatterplot indicates that the Mulan Lake population could be a separate taxon identified by shorter protuberance length and body length.

A new species of the sand-burrowing dogielinotid amphipod genus Haustorioides Oldevig, 1958, Haustorioides furotai Ogawa, sp. nov., is described from Banzu tidal flat, east coast of Tokyo Bay, Japan. The new species is mainly characterized by a slender and triangular outer plate of the maxilliped, poorly setose antennae and pereopods, straightly acute posterodistal corner of epimeral plates 2 and 3, and an uncleft and ridged telson. Analyses of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences verified that H. furotai belongs to the monophyletic clade consisting of the other Haustorioides species. Additionally, Eohaustorioides Bousfield and Tzvetkova, 1982, and Parhaustorioides Ren, 2006 are synonymized with Haustorioides based on morphological analysis. An identification key to the species of the genus Haustorioides is also provided.

Although the members of the genus Telmatactis Gravier, 1916 have been reported from broad area of the world including Japanese waters, the localities of the species have been limited to shallow areas. In this study, we report a new species in this genus, Telmatactis profundigigantica sp. nov., collected from the deeper area than 200 m of the East China Sea off Okinawa Island, discovered by ROV, and taken care of in Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. This new species is chiefly characterized by its comparatively huge size of its body, over 10 cm in diameter and height, far larger than the other known species of this genus. Moreover, this species has characteristic multiple-headed tentacles and large cnidae in its acrospheres. In the present article, we also discuss the severe toxicity of this species and touch on the ecology of deep-sea anemones.

A new species of podocerid amphipod, Podocerus jinbe, is named and described. This new species was collected from the gill rakers of the whale shark Rhincodon typus Smith, 1828 from off Yomitan Village, Okinawa Island, Japan. This is the first record of an amphipod associated with the whale shark. Podocerus jinbe sp. nov. is morphologically similar to P. zeylanicus (Walker, 1904), but differs from the latter by its larger body size, shorter peduncular article 1 of antenna 1, longer flagellar article 1 of antenna 1, subrectangular propodus of male gnathopod 1, anteriorly concave basis of male gnathopod 2, narrow merus of female gnathopod 2, greater number of robust setae on rami of uropods 1 and 2, and greater number of long robust setae on the telson apical lobe. Additionally, a partial DNA sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of this species was determined for future studies.

Ricuzenius toyamensis Matsubara and Iwai, 1951 was originally described on the basis of eight specimens collected from Toyama Bay, the Sea of Japan coast of central Honshu Island, Japan. The species has subsequently been considered as a valid species of the genus Icelus Krøyer, 1845, diagnosed by the following characters: supraocular and parietal spines absent; nuchal spine blunt and indistinct, covered with skin; uppermost preopercular spine unbranched; mid-sized scales scattered (not in rows) above and below lateral line; belly naked; minute ctenoid scales on upper part of maxillary; lateral line scales large, tubular, bearing spinules on dorsal and posterior margins; and lower jaw slightly protruding anteriorly. However, examination of the type specimens of Icelus rastrinoides Taranetz in Schmidt, 1935, a northern Sea of Japan species, showed them to be consistent with the holotype and paratypes of I. toyamensis. Accordingly, I. rastorinoides is regarded as a senior synonym of I. toyamensis, with the lectotype of the former being designated herein. The species is redescribed in detail on the basis of the types of both nominal species plus non-type specimens, with a note on geographic variations in dorsal- and anal-fin ray counts, which reflect Jordan’s rule.

A new kelp crab species of the genus Pugettia Dana, 1851 from Shandong Peninsula, north China is described and illustrated. Pugettia longipes n. sp. resembles P. ferox Ohtsuchi and Kawamura, 2019 and P. quadridens (De Haan, 1837), but can be distinguished by many morphological and morphometric characters. These include the shape of the basal antennal article, shorter cheliped merus, longer ambulatory legs (first legs longer than chelipeds in merus length), the structure of male first gonopod, and the different ontogenetic patterns of changes in the male chelae. A taxonomic key to all the upper subtidal species of Pugettia distributed in East Asian waters and P. longipes n. sp. is also provided.
