The Palais Royal has played a central role in the history of theatres in France. It also had an important influence on the town-planning of Paris. In this research I analyse the relationship between the theatres which were built in the Palais Royal and the development of the surrounding area. From the examination of various plans, the different forms of theatres in their built form can be explained in terms of different ideas concerning urban structure. By charting these differences we can see a process of shift from a court theatre to a urban public theatre, which in turn changed the surrounding urban spaces. This analysis thus provides a new understanding of the relationship between theatres and the urban spaces that contain them.

This study aims to investigate to what extent current Japanese Montessori nursery schools embody the physical elements of the environment suggested by Maria Montessori. Based on these elements, a questionnaire was constructed and mailed to a total of 701 Montessori and non-Montessori nursery schools all over Japan. Replies from 95 and 192 schools (Montessori, non-Montessori, respectively) were analyzed. It was indicated that: (a) Montessori schools embody significantly more elements than non-Montessori ones; (b) Montessori schools maintain their policy of providing various sizes of tables and a special room for afternoon nap that will support children’s self-directed activities.

19−20世紀転換期のウィーンにおいて,コロマン・モーザー(Koloman Moser/1868−1918)は,本来画家でありながら空間デザインで活躍していた。本稿の目的は,モーザーによる空間デザインを彼と同時期に共に活動したヨーゼフ・ホフマン(Josef Hoffman/1870−1956)と比較し,彼らが1903年に設立したウィーン工房の設立以前とウィーン工房時代の変化を考察することである。各々の主導あるいは協働でデザインした住宅を研究対象とし,文献と当時の写真資料をもとに,具体的に壁などの装飾の文様,家具と照明具の形状,色彩を時系列に挙げ,両者の担当を示し分析した。その結果,ウィーン工房設立によって,両者の空間デザインで相互の影響が見られた。

In the second half of the 18th century, theatres have gradually began to play an increasingly important role in town-planning in France. In this research I have chosen to analyze one example, the theatre of the Palais Royal in Paris designed by Victor Louis, focusing on the relation between the redevelopment of the Palais Royal as a whole and the construction of the new theatre. From the study of various plans by Louis, it becomes obvious that his primary interest was to create a new garden, enclosed by new apartment buildings. The theatre was treated as a point of contact with its surrounding urban spaces. This case study compares this with a contemporary theatre, "l'Odeon", which was also a nucleus for the elaboration of its neighbouring area.
