The water management systems in channel network in the Saga Plains have a long history. The functions, drainage and irrigation etc., are gradually changing for 400 years with social systems such as modernizing of agriculture and urbanization etc. An integrated water management based on inhabitants' consciousness and water quality is necessary for environmental conservation. For the sake of appropriate environmental conservation of the creeks, 1) historical change of the water management is classified, 2) relationships between the change of water management and social systems are revealed, 3) inhabitants' consciousness is surveyed by the questionnaire. As a result, the change of water management is classified into three processes, that is, the developing process (-1600), the completion process (1600-1940), and the declining process due to water pollution (1940-present). From the result of the questionnaire, important experiences during childhood, such as drinking the water of creeks and swimming, influence inhabitants' consciousness viz, familiarity to the creeks. Especially, the influence appeared strongly on middle-aged inhabitants who were in childhood earlier in the third process. It is necessary to sustain the traditional experiences for conserving the environment.

In the Rokkaku basin, paddy fields have spread over extensively reclaimed lands and the water requirement surpasses the river water utilization capacity. Then many irrigation ponds and deep wells were constracted, and traditional water control systems have been kept for some 400 years by regional inhabitants. The farmland improvement project and constraction of the river mouth reservoir are in effect, and they will change inhabitant consciousness about water quantity and quality. It is necessary to reform the water control system with quantity and quality according to the improvement of irrigation and drainage establishments and the development of rural communities. The water environment in the rural area has to be independently managed by the organization mainly composed of local inhabitants, and the administrative organizations have to provide sewage treatment system at cities for the preservation and improvement of water quality in this basin.

Demethyl derivatives of steganes and deoxypodorhizon, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 18, 23, were prepared by the selective demethylation of the methoxy group of steganes and deoxypodorhizon, 2, 5, 8, 11, 22. The cytotoxicity of these derivatives was evaluated against KB cell and was found not to exceed that of the parent steganes. 4-Demethyldexypodorhizon (18) was found to show more potent cytotoxicity than deoxypodorhizon (22).

ポドフィロトキシン系抗癌剤エトポシド2__ーはその糖部分の変換誘導体による活性強度増強、毒性の軽減が検討されている。本研究ではこうした手法に加えて、ポドフィロトキシン1__ー自体の骨格の注目し、新規含窒素骨格3__ーを設計し、その合成法の開発及び生物活性を検討した。3__ーは短工程、高収率、高立体選択的に合成できた。すなわち、d1ーあるいは光学活性なアミノ酸を還元、環化、ベンジル位の酸化、次いでトリメトキシベンツアルデヒドと縮合するとトランス体4__ーが得られた。シスートランス異性化及びベンジル位置換反応を経由して4__ーから3__ーおよびその誘導体の合成は容易であった。3__ーは期待通りin vivoさらにはin vitroで強い制癌活性を発現することが判明した。また、天然ポドフィロトキシン1__ーと同じ絶対配置を有する3__ーにより強い活性が認められた。これらの結果は含窒素骨格3__ーが新たなリ-ド化合物として多大な可能性を有していることを示すものである。
