In 1996,H.Sasaki discovered a Sandgaku, mathematical plate, in Hirohata shrine (Komono 2700,Komono-cho, Mie, Japan). No one was aware of the existence of this mathematical plate until then. In this brief note, I investigate the plate and make clear the structure of the solution given by Murai Chouei, its author.

The purpose of this paper is to classify the patterns of calculation of the winter or summersolstice in Shou-shi-li, the last method of establishing the calendar before the Ming dynasty in China, and to make a strict interpretation of the original text on the basis of this classification. Some parts of the text have ambiguous expressions and we can not interpret them when we only consider each phrase in question. Our approach is valid for this question.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the mathematical treatise Kujutsu Shinsho written by Heinouchi Masaomi, the master of carpenters in Edo period. The basic tools used in the book are right triangles and similarities between them. The materials are concerned with carpenters' daily works. Almost all problems are elementary but the problems about extracting square and cubic root are still very interesting for us, for he describes the procedure of drawing the square or cubic root for a given positive integer.

Cymbella janischii (A. W. F. Schmidt) De Toni and Gomphoneis minuta (Stone) Kociolek & Stoermer collected from the upper Tama River in Oume City, Tokyo, were examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). We present 56 pictures here which were taken from various directions as a basis for future research in taxonomy or morphology.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the mathematics textbooks in China mainly from the historical point of view and to consider the significance of putting the historical teaching materials in the mathematics textbooks. From the historical viewpoint one may say that the historical descriptions taken up in Chinese mathematics textbooks are almost restricted within what related to China herself. It is also emphasized that the most essential significance of putting the historical teaching materials in the textbook is for pupils to be encouraged and yearned to study mathematics.
