The object of this investigation is to introduce the application of the theory of fluctuation to some problems of statistical seismology. We have investigated the fluctuation of the number of earthquakes instrumentally registered in some units of time, taking the statistical after-effect into consideration.

The Shonai earthquake took place on Oct. 22, 1894, about 400 km north from Tokyo in Yamagata Prefecture. Sometimes it is called the Sakata earthquake because the earthquake damage was great at Sakata City. The reports of their earthquake were few in number, several unknown data were shown the writer by Mr. S. Sato of the Sakata Library. Then the new data were looked over for this paper.

Detailed investigation of phenomena that accompany earthquakes is fundamental work in seismology. Unfortunately, however, we have not yet advanced to that stage where we could predict earthquakes, while the means at our disposal at present for studying them the instant they arrive are inadequate, particularly, in the case of destructive shocks near their epicentres, all that we can do being to study the aftershocks that are recorded on seismographs, which data are nevertheless very valuable. But there is much information besides that pertaining directly to the main shock, and it is this knowledge that the writers sought to obtain.

A serious earthquake eccurred in the north-eastern part of Tottori prefecture. The loss of life ammounted to 1117, severely wounded 669, totally destroyed houses 7485 and burned houses 251(statistics for Sept. 17, 1943) The damages were related to the river basin; about 80% of these damages were done in the basin of Hukuro-gawa(river) in the city of Tottori.

昭和21年12月21日南海大地震調査報告(第1報)今回の地震による被害調査のため和歌山県下に赴いたのであるが、県下各地共地震による被害は余り大なるものがなく、津浪による被害が相当あったので、ここでは津浪の被害に対する所見を述べる事とする。

1953年7月26日箱根早雲山において山津波が発生し,人員及び建造物に対して相当の損害をあたえた(第1図).我々は7月29日, 31日, 8月5日及び11月11日に現地を調査する機会を得たので,その結果を報告する.The earth-flow of 1953 at Sounzan was studied, and the results are summarized as follows: 1. The earth-flow reached about 2 km distant eastward from its source with a maximum width of nearly 140 m, and the total volume of flowed earth and stones was estimated at 700,000 m3.
