Alignment properties of nematic liquid crystals in contact with a micro-patterned polyimide surface were investigated. The pattern was formed by stripes of alternating planar and homeotropic anchoring. The theoretical and experimental results implied that domains with opposite tilt angle of LC directors were formed inside the cell. The average tilt angle was nearly 45°and fairly varied from this equilibrium value depending on the treatment method.
