We measured the incidence of osteoarthritis of outpatients in six university and thirty-six general hospitals. In addition we performed a case study on osteoarthritis of the knee to investigate physical and other factors associated with severity of symptoms, uning a selfadministered questionnaire.Investigation of the hospital statistics revealed that 7.6% of all orthopeadic patients had osteoarthritis of the knee, and 70% of these cases were females. Regarding age 97% of patients were over forty years of age, and 900, 000 men and women were newly diagnosed with this disease every year.Symptoms of this disease were more severe with increasing body weight and BMI (Body Mass Index) at the time of both initial examination and at forty years of age. Bluecollar workers presented with more severe symptoms than did other workers.

We have been reported the effects of some drugs (ex. calcitonine, vitamin D etc.) on epiphyseal growth plate of HEBP (EHDP) induced rachitic rats, but those effects may be characteristic for HEBP induced richets. So we started the study about strontium induced rachitic rats. In this paper, effects of calcium and strontium content in a diet on epiphyseal growth plates of rats were reported.Our results were as follows: 1) With the diet containing 2 weight % of strontium and 0.1 weight % of calcium for 3 weeks, remarkable rachitic changes of epiphyseal growth plate of the rat were evoked; 2) In this exprimental model, serum Pi and Ca decresed, and serum Alp incresed significantly compared with control.

We analysed possible pathophysiology of cubitus varus deformity after supracondylar fracture of the humerus using clinical materials and experimental models. In addition to varus, distal portion of the humerus usually rotates internaly and extends posteriorly. As a result, pronation of the forearm, external rotation of the shoulder and elbow flexion are limited in the patients with cubitus varus deformity.

We studied 130 knees in 91 patients to determine the problems in fibula osteotomy sites following high tibial osteotomy. Fibula nonunion was seen radiologically in 20% of knees. The occurrence of nonunion was related to the length of the osteotomy site interval. Nonunion especially occurred with high frequency when the length was greater than 9mm. Nonunion could be divided into the hypertrophic and atrophic type. Gait pain around the fibula osteotomy site was frequently observed in patients who had hypertrophic nonunion.We have introduced a new fibula interlocking osteotomy which provides wide contact between the osteotomy sites to prevent occurrence of nonunion and fibula osteotomy site pain.
