Recent public access to various on-line research databases in the humanities hasfacilitated access to the on-line university and non-university materials. This essayprovides an outline to databases that primarily contain documents, digital archives, and digital data incidental to these two on-line sources. Consequently, it is my intention to question how documents should be preserved and digitalized for public access.

A Chinese textbook titled the Kuan Hua Chih Nan has been used by many Japanese and Western learners of Chinese since its publication in 1882. The textbook was also translated into various Chinese dialects including Shanghai dialect and Cantonese. Furthermore, the Chinese textbook, originally designed for foreigners, was revised and published in around 1918 as a textbook for Chinese people under different titles. In other words, the Kuan Hua Chih Nan also served as a textbook for Chinese people in the early 1900s to learn Mandarin Chinese or the common speech. This paper focuses on the Kuan Hua Chih Nan as a Chinese textbook published for Chinese people and examines the Kuan Hua Chih Nan and textbooks derived from the Kuan Hua Chih Nan.

In the early Showa era, the number of Chinese learners increased and Chinese teaching materials were created and published not only for adults but also for children. As a result of data collection, it gradually became clear. This paper particularly focuses on a part of the Chinese teaching materials for children that have not been collected in libraries so far and are not listed in the catalogs of pre-war Chinese teaching materials together with their contents.
