The skin irritating effect of various compounds was examined and the following results were obtained.1) Alcohols and esters are, in general, non-irritating effect. Acids, lactones and phenolshave a slight irritating effect. Aldehydes are strongly irritating and halogen compounds have also a strong irritating action.2) The greater the degree of unsaturation, the stronger is the irritating effect. Double bond compounds, especially, have a strong irritating action.3) Ketones are slightly irritating but those which are readily enolized have a strong irritating action.4) The irritability of aromatic aldehydes differs according to the type and position of the substituting radical.5) Water soluble but fat insoluble and water insoluble compounds are non-irritating. Skin irritants have the property of being both water and fat soluble in a certain ratio.
