Background: It has been reported that patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) transferred to low-volume primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) hospitals (<115/year) in low population density areas experience higher in-hospital mortality rates. This study compared in-hospital outcomes of patients admitted to high-volume primary PCI hospitals (≥115/year) with those for other regional general hospitals.Methods and Results: Retrospective analysis was conducted on data obtained from 2,453 patients with AMI admitted to hospitals in Iwate Prefecture (2014–2018). Multivariate analysis revealed that the in-hospital mortality rate of AMI among patients in regional general hospitals was significantly higher than among patients in high-volume hospitals. However, no significant difference in mortality rate was observed among patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary PCI. Although no significant difference was found in the in-hospital mortality rate of patients with Killip class I STEMI, significantly lower in-hospital mortality rates were observed in patients admitted in high-volume hospitals for Killip classes II, III, and IV.Conclusions: Although in-hospital outcomes for patients with STEMI undergoing primary PCI were similar, patients with heart failure or cardiogenic shock exhibited better in-hospital outcomes in high-volume primary PCI hospitals than those in regional general hospitals.

Community pharmacies in Japan have long been advocated as effective sources of nonprescription medicines and health-related advice. Consumers sometimes self-treat symptoms of minor illnesses without consulting a pharmacist because the benefits of such consultations are not adequately recognized. The aim of this study was to investigate the use and impact of pharmacist consultations before purchase of nonprescription laxatives. An online survey was conducted July 14–22, 2012 with 500 respondents (250 men, 250 women), ranging 20–60 years old. All participants had purchased nonprescription laxatives for constipation within the past year. Stratified analysis was used to compare responses in groups that had and had not consulted a pharmacist before purchase. Consulting a pharmacist appears to improve consumers’ awareness and makes them more likely to use appropriate medication. Those who consulted a pharmacist were better able to identify side effects and take appropriate action than the group that did not consult the pharmacist. Those who consulted a pharmacist were also significantly more likely to say that they would consult a pharmacist in the future. These results indicate that it is important for consumers to be able to consult with pharmacists, to improve consumers’ awareness of side effects and to self-medicate appropriately, and hence improve their quality of life. Pharmacists in community pharmacy could be more active in health promotion campaigns, such as drug safety, campaigns, to raise their public profile. Increased public awareness of what pharmacists in community pharmacy do will make it easier for patients to consult with them.

An endogenous retrovirus-derived membrane protein, syncytin (SYN), contributes to placental function via trophoblast fusion. Multinuclear trophoblasts (syncytiotrophoblasts) physically and functionally mediate the interaction between fetal and maternal vessels in various ways. Suncus murinus (suncus) is a small mammalian species with a pregnancy duration of approximately 30 days, 1.5 times longer than mice. However, the molecular basis for the longer pregnancy duration is unknown. In this study, we first isolated two putative Syn genes that were expressed in the suncus placenta. In this study, we first isolated two Syn genes that encoded putative SYN proteins expressed in the suncus placenta, which were named syncytin-1 (SYN-1)-like proteins 1 and 2. When their expression vectors were introduced into cultured cells, suncus SYN1L2 was found to be active in cell fusion. Moreover, the SYN1L2 protein was homologous to a SYN1-like protein identified in greater mouse-eared bats (bat SYN1L) and was structurally compared with bat SYN1L and other SYN proteins, implying the presence of structural features of the SYN1L2 protein.

Botryococcus braunii strain Austin and strain Berkeley cultured under the same conditions contained 27.4g and 34.0g of lipids per 100g of dry alga, respectively. The lipids in the former strain were 25.5% hydrocarbons, 58.8% other nonpolar lipids, and 15.7% polar lipids, and those in the latter strain were 71.6%, 9.2%, and 19.2%, respectively. Distinct differences were also observed in the components of the nonpolar and polar lipids, especially in the latter, between the strains. The fatty acid composition of the nonpolar lipid fraction in Austin strain was unique, oleic acid being 81% of the total acids.
