A new kelp crab species of the genus Pugettia Dana, 1851 from Shandong Peninsula, north China is described and illustrated. Pugettia longipes n. sp. resembles P. ferox Ohtsuchi and Kawamura, 2019 and P. quadridens (De Haan, 1837), but can be distinguished by many morphological and morphometric characters. These include the shape of the basal antennal article, shorter cheliped merus, longer ambulatory legs (first legs longer than chelipeds in merus length), the structure of male first gonopod, and the different ontogenetic patterns of changes in the male chelae. A taxonomic key to all the upper subtidal species of Pugettia distributed in East Asian waters and P. longipes n. sp. is also provided.

Since marine medusae and ctenophores harbor a wide variety of symbionts, from protists to fish, they constitute a unique community in pelagic ecosystems. Their symbiotic relationships broadly range from simple, facultative phoresy through parasitisim to complex mutualism, although it is sometimes difficult to define these associations strictly. Phoresy and/or commensalism are found in symbionts such as pycnogonids, decapod larvae and fish juveniles. Parasitism and/or parasitoidism are common in the following symbionts: dinoflagellates, ciliates, anthozoan larvae, pedunculate barnacles, anuropid isopods, and hyperiid amphipods. Mutualism is established between ctenophores and gymnamoebae, and between rhizostome medusae and endosymbiotic dinoflagellates. More information on symbiotic apostome ciliates, anthozoan larvae and hyperiid amphipods is definitely needed for further studies in consideration of their high prevalence and serious damage they can inflict on their hosts. The present paper briefly reviews previously published data on symbionts on these gelatinous predators and introduces new information in the form of our unpublished data.

Two mature specimens of the whale-fall lancelet Asymmetron inferum Nishikawa, 2004, were collected in 2016 from reducing gravel bottom near a hydrothermal vent, 196 m deep, at Oomuro Hole of Oomuro-dashi submarine volcano in the Izu Islands, Pacific coast of Japan by using the ROV Hyper-Dolphin during the RV Shinsei-maru KS-16-6 cruise of JAMSTEC. This species has so far been known exclusively from whale-fall communities off Cape Nomamisaki, SW Kyushu, Japan, 219–254 m deep. The new find suggests the dispersal stepping-stone hypothesis of whale-fall communities for the origin of vent and/or seep fauna.

The known crab species of the Ogasawara (= Bonin) Islands, Tokyo, Japan, are updated, with the literature and localities concerned. In Table 1 are the definitely identified 314 species from the three island groups, Muko-jima (= Keetaa I.), Chichi-jima (= Peel I.) and Haha-jima (= Coffin I.) Groups, and also, 35 species from the southernmost Iwo-jima (= Sulhur I.) Group, and two solitary islands, Nishino-shima (= Rosario) Island and Okino-Torishima (= Parece Veta) Island are listed in Table 2. Otherwise, in Table 3, the deep-sea 10 species reported from the seamounts off the Ogasawara Islands are listed. Eight of 35 species (in Table 2) and 4 of 10 species (in Table 3) are unrecorded from three main island groups, and thus a total of 326 species are known from the sea around the Ogasawara Islands.

The crabs collected by the RV Hakuhō Maru (KH-72-1 cruise) in the South China Sea are recorded as the fourth part following the previous three parts of the series (Sulu Sea and Sibutu Passage, Timor Sea, and Sahul Shelf). They are mostly shallow water inhabitants, representing 35 species of 31 genera in 13 families, with two new species of the family Epialtidae, Naxioides elongatus sp. nov. and Samadinia hakuhoae sp. nov. Taxonomic comments are given for each species. In this fourth and final part, biogeographic notes on all the species collected by RV Hakuhō Maru (KH-72-1 cruise) are briefly summarized, together with a list of the crabs collected by the RV Hakuhō Maru (KH-73-2 cruise) in the South China Sea.
