Long-term parasitological surveys were conducted on the isopod Ceratothoa verrucosa infecting red seabream Pagrus major caught in Iyo-Nada, Ehime Prefecture during the period of 2003–2007. ​The isopods were almost always in a pair of a male and a female, attached to the buccal cavity wall. ​The earliest infection occurred when seabream was 0+ year-old and the isopods grew as host fish grew. ​Prevalence of infection ranged from 12.2% to 21.2% when the host was 0+ to 5-year-old and decreased to 3.4% at 6-year-old and no infection among 7-year-old and older fish. ​These results suggest that infection was established when the host was 0+ year-old, and their life span of C. verrucose was estimated to be up to 6 years. ​Infected fish sometimes showed deformation in the upper jaw and growth retardation, but there was no evidence of infection-related mortality. ​The main reproduction season of the isopod was in summer, estimated by the presence of manca larvae in the marsupium of the female. ​Sometimes the monogenean Choricotyle elongata attached to the pleotelson of C. verrucosa. ​Prevalence and abundance of the monogenean were higher in the hyperparasitized seabream than in the fish without isopod infection, suggesting that the isopod favored the monogenean infection.

The grow-out stage of leopard coral grouper Plectropomus leopardus reared in land-based tanks in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, were often heavily infected with capsalid monogeneans, up to a few millimeters in size, on the fins and skin. ​Morphological investigation revealed that the parasite belongs to Benedenia (Monogenea: Capsalidae). ​Benedenia akajin n. sp. is proposed here and described morphologically, based on the unique structures in the vaginal duct with a thick-walled distal one-third, the penis with a teat-shaped tip and the testes smaller than the germarium. ​A positive relationship between the lengths of three haptoral sclerites (anterior sclerites and anterior and posterior hamuli) and body length indicates that these taxonomically important structures keep growing as the parasite ages. ​Molecular analyses showed that the present species is most closely related to B. epinepheli and B. sargocentron, with the highest 28S rDNA identity of 98.1%, but no identical sequences were found in the database. ​Both morphological and molecular evidences suggest Benedenia akajin n. sp. as an undescribed species, and this new skin fluke deserves further investigations for the stable aquaculture of P. leopardus.

2- (1, t- and c-4-Dialkylcyclohex-r-1-yl) -2-oxoethyl arenesulfonates, 2- (4, 4-dialkylcyclohex-1-yl) -2-oxoethyl arenesulfonates and related compounds were synthesized and evaluated for esteraseand chymotrypsin-inhibitory activities in vitro and for hypolipidemic effect in vivo. The transisomers of 2- (1, 4-dialkylcyclohex-1-yl) -2-oxoethyl arenesulfonates showed much more potent esterase-inhibitory action (about 13 to 6200 times) than the cis-isomers as well as more potent hypolipidemic action (about 1.5 to 10 times) but the chymotrypsin-inhibitory actions of the two isomers were similarly low. On the other hand, the 2-oxoethyl arenesulfonates having a 4, 4- disubstituted cyclohexane ring mostly exhibited potent esterase-inhibitory action (order of IC50; 10-8 to 10-9M) and marked hypolipidemic effect (78% to 95% reductions of plasma triglyceride).

trans-and cis-2-Diazo-1- (4-alkylcyclohexyl) -1-ethanones were reacted with arenesulfonic acids to afford the corresponding 2- (4-alkylcyclohexyl) -2-oxoethyl arenesulfonates. The esteraseinhibitory activity and hypolipidemic effect of the arenesulfonates were examined, and it was found that in most cases, the trans-isomers were more active than the corresponding cis-isomers.Stereoselective syntheses of several biologically potent trans-isomers (trans-3) were also developed.

Various ω-cycloalkyl-2-oxoalkyl arenesulfonates were synthesized and evaluated for esterase-and chymotrypsin-inhibitory activities and hypolipidemic activity. Among the tested compounds, 2-oxoalkyl arenesulfonates (4, 8 and 13) having a cyclohexyl substituent at the terminus of the alkyl chain exhibited considerable esterase-inhibitory activity, and several compounds among 4 and 8 also exhibited potent hypolipidemic action. The structure-activity relationships of these compounds are discussed.
