In June 1994, the world's first clinical center offering carbon ion radiotherapy opened at the National Institute of Radiological Science (NIRS), Japan. Among several types of ion species, carbon ions were chosen for cancer therapy because they were judged to have the most optimal properties in terms of superior physical and biological characteristics. As of March 2010, 5,196 patients have been registered for carbon ion radiotherapy. Clinical results have shown that carbon ion radiotherapy has the potential to provide a sufficient radiation dose to the tumor, while having acceptable morbidity in the surrounding normal tissues. Tumors that appear to respond favorably to carbon ions include locally advanced tumors as well as histologically non-squamous cell tumor types such as adenocarcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, malignant melanoma, hepatoma, and bone/soft tissue sarcoma. By taking advantage of the unique properties of carbon ions, treatment with small fractions within a short treatment period has been successfully carried out for a variety of tumors. This means that carbon ion radiotherapy can offer treatment for larger numbers of patients than is possible with other modalities over the same time period.

本論文では,間欠的にシステムが利用される環境を考慮したソフトウェア可用性評価モデルについて議論する.これまでに提案されてきたソフトウェア可用性評価尺度は,特定の時点でシステムが動作可能かどうかに注目していた.しかしながら,実際の利用者の立場から見ると,使用していないときにシステムが故障してもその故障の発生は認知されない.言い換えると,システムを使用しているときにソフトウェア故障が発生するか,あるいはシステムの修復中に使用要求が起こった時点で,システム故障の発生が認知される.ここでは上述の状況を考慮して,使用中の失望確率,使用要求拒絶による失望確率,および修復中の失望確率という3つの新たなソフトウェア可用性評価尺度を導出する.使用要求の発生時間および使用時間間隔はランダムであるとし,ソフトウェアシステムの状態遷移の様子はマルコフ過程を用いて記述される.このとき,ソフトウェア信頼度の成長過程やフォールトの複雑度・修正困難度の上昇傾向,発見されたフォールトに対するデバッグ作業はいつも確実に実施されるとは限らないという不完全デバッグ環境がモデルに反映される.最後に,これらの評価尺度の数値例を示す.

Epidemiological studies suggest that lung cancer, which is a major cause of cancer death, has a critical association with cigarette smoking. Tobacco-specific nitrosamine 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) in cigarette smoke is a major risk factor for carcinogenesis. However, the mechanisms by which NNK promotes cancer development have not been fully elucidated. Growing evidence suggests that lung cancer originates from cancer stem cells (CSCs), which are a minor population of lung cancer cells. In the present study, we investigated the effects of NNK on the CSCs in A549 human lung cancer cells using flow cytometry with aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), a functional marker of CSCs. We found that NNK increased the proportion of ALDH-positive cells in a dose-dependent manner. A Wnt inhibitor PNU74654 reduced NNK-induced expression levels of Wnt target gene Dkk1 and increase in ALDH-positive cells. We next examined the signaling pathway that mediates the NNK-induced increase in ALDH-positive cells via Wnt signaling. DCF assay revealed that NNK induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The ROS scavenger N-acetylcysteine (NAC) inhibited the NNK-induced Wnt activation and increase in ALDH-positive cells. These data suggest that NNK-induced ROS activate the Wnt signaling pathway in A549 cells. These findings would provide new insights into the role of NNK in the lung CSCs.

Considering an actual software testing phase, we have no doubt that the software reliability growth process depends on test environment factors, such as testing coverage, the number of test-runs and debugging skills, which affect the software failure occurrence or fault detection phenomenon in the testing phase. In this paper, we propose a software reliability modeling approach that considers the effects of the testing environment factors based on a program size that depends on a discrete binomial-type software reliability model which is consistent with software reliability data collection and enables us to consider the effect of the program size. Finally, we compare the accuracy of our model through a software reliability assessment of our model with the existing corresponding model by using actual data.

This article examines characteristics of Japanese public opinion surveys during 1990-2009 and makes pertinent comparisons with the past. Public opinion surveys continued to increase with cities being the major contributor to that growth. Surveys conducted face-to-face and those that used drop self-administered questionnaires decreased, whereas mail surveys increased. Telephone surveys remained a relatively minor method, but increased substantially compared to before 1990. The use of Voter Registration Lists decreased; whereas there were increases in surveys that sampled either from the Basic Resident Registers or did not employ lists. For the 1990-09 period as a whole, the median response rate was 58.9% which suggests a steeper decline than the decreases observed in the past. Surveys sponsored by central government agencies had the highest rates and those by universities the lowest. Among studies that used probability sampling, the highest median response rates were for drop self-administered questionnaires followed by face-to-face and mail surveys.

Sarcopenia from aging, inactivity, weightlessness, disease and malnutrition causes social problems due to associated physical dysfunction, a decrease in QOL, and risk of death. As a means of alleviating sarcopenia, appropriate exercise and nutrition therapy is required. However, nourishment therapy is especially important for a person in a situation where exercise is not feasible for maintaining skeletal muscle mass and muscular strength. Therefore, the authors studied the inhibitory effect of aspartic acid magnesium on disuse muscle atrophy. Herein we have described two of the mechanisms of action of aspartic acid magnesium on disuse muscle atrophy suppression. Initially, inactivity causes a decrease in capillary and oxygen supply, inhibits ATP synthesis, and produces active oxygen. As a result, the proteolysis system is activated and muscle atrophy progresses. We have described the effect of aspartic acid magnesium uptake on this mechanism, and the imbalance of the intracellular mineral with the inactive proteolysis system.
