Background:Hydrogen gas inhalation (HI) ameliorates cerebral and cardiac dysfunction in animal models of post-cardiac arrest syndrome (PCAS). HI for human patients with PCAS has never been studied.Methods and Results:Between January 2014 and January 2015, 21 of 107 patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest achieved spontaneous return of circulation. After excluding 16 patients with specific criteria, 5 patients underwent HI together with target temperature management (TTM). No undesirable effects attributable to HI were observed and 4 patients survived 90 days with a favorable neurological outcome.Conclusions:HI in combination with TTM is a feasible therapy for patients with PCAS. We report three cases of multicentric Castleman's disease (MCD) successfully treated with anti-interleukin-6 receptor antibody (tocilizumab). Tocilizumab was administered intravenously at a dose of 8 mg/kg every 2 weeks. In each case, tocilizumab alleviated symptoms, including generalized fatigue, pyrexia, and alleviated biochemical abnormalities, including anemia, hypoalbuminemia, hypergammaglobulinemia, and increased C-reactive protein (CRP). Side effects included hypercholesterolemia, acute pyelonephritis, mild inflammation of the parotid glands, and upper respiratory system inflammation. Other severe side effects were not observed. These results indicate that tocilizumab is effective for the treatment of MCD. This is the first report on tocilizumab efficacy for Castleman's disease after approval for use for Castleman's disease.

Sea cucumber is a traditional food item in Asia and has been reported to exhibit antifungal, antitumor, and antioxidant bioactivity as well as other properties. In this study, sea cucumbers were treated with hot water at 98°C for 60min to prepare extracts that were then used to assess their effect on the proliferation and H2O2 susceptibility of human colon adenocarcinoma Caco-2 cells. The growth of Caco-2 cells was significantly inhibited by sea cucumber extracts in a dose dependent manner. Cell proliferation was inhibited by high molecular weight sea cucumber extract at a concentration of 0.108mg/mL. No growth was observed at 1.04mg/mL of the hot water extract after 96h incubation. Cell damage by sea cucumber extract was evident above 1mg/mL. H2O2 showed concentration dependent cytotoxity to Caco-2 cells. In addition, coadministration of sea cucumber extracts intensified the H2O2 cytotoxity.

To study the anti-tumor activity of sea cucumber extracts, human colon adenocarcinoma Caco-2 cells were exposed to hot water extract of sea cucumber. Morphological changes with apoptotic bodies were observed in the cells treated with the extract. We demonstrated the induction of apoptosis using phosphatidylserine translocation (APOPercentage Assay kit), terminal deoxynucleotide transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling (TUNEL), and DNA fragmentation observed as DNA ladder. These results show that apoptosis was induced by a high molecular weight fraction in a dose dependent manner. These data suggest that water soluble and high molecular weight compounds from sea cucumber might exhibit anti-tumor activity by triggering apoptosis. The apoptosis-inducing activity may contribute to cancer chemopreventive effects of sea cucumber.

本論文はネオ機能主義社会学の基本構造の解読を試みるものである。ネオ機能主義社会学者は、第一に、パーソンズの理論前提的議論を継承しながら、社会体系の水準において理論前提的問題 (行為-秩序問題) を提起し、戦後社会学第二期に登場した社会学理論化の理論前提を解説してきた。結果、彼/彼女らは、一連の理論前提的議論から、それらの理論化の還元・融合による一次元化を指摘し、自らの理論化においては多彩なマイクローマクロ・リンクを可能にする多次元的社会学理論化を提唱している。ネオ機能主義社会学者は、第二に、自らの理論前提的議論 (一般化されたディスコース) を特定化しながら、リサーチ・プログラムを編成し、経験的具体的な社会秩序分析に志向してきた。彼/彼女らは、規範的マクロ社会学を主軸にしながらも、行為問題、条件的物質的要因を自らの理論化に組み入れ、多次元的な規範秩序分析を展開している。ネオ機能主義社会学は、戦後社会学第三期「マイクローマクロ・リンク」時代における有力な社会学理論化の一つとして台頭してきている。

Background: Epidemiological studies consistently indicate that alcoholic beverages are an independent risk factor for female breast cancer. Although the mechanism underlying this effect remains unknown, the predominant hypothesis implicates mutagenesis via the ethanol metabolite acetaldehyde, whose impact on the carcinogenesis of several types of cancer has been shown in both experimental models and molecular epidemiological studies. Many of the epidemiological studies have investigated genetic polymorphisms of alcohol dehydrogenase-1B (ADH1B) His48Arg and aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2) Glu504Lys, because of the strong impact these polymorphisms have on exposure to and accumulation of acetaldehyde. With regard to breast cancer, however, evidence is scarce.Methods: To clarify the impact on female breast cancer risk of the interaction of the effects of alcohol consumption and polymorphisms in the alcohol-metabolizing enzymes ADH1B and ALDH2, we conducted a case–control study of 456 newly and histologically diagnosed breast cancer cases and 912 age- and menopausal status-matched noncancer controls. Gene–gene and gene–environment interactions between individual and combined ADH1B and ALDH2 gene polymorphisms and alcohol consumption were evaluated.Results: Despite sufficient statistical power, there was no significant impact of ADH1B and ALDH2 on the risk of breast cancer. Neither was there any significant gene–environment interactions between alcohol drinking and polymorphisms in ADH1B and ALDH2.Conclusions: Our findings do not support the hypothesis that acetaldehyde is the main contributor to the carcinogenesis of alcohol-induced breast cancer.
