Purpose: To investigate whether intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) and/or non-Gaussian diffusion parameters are associated with distant disease-free survival (DDFS) in patients with invasive breast cancer.Methods: From May 2013 to March 2015, 101 patients (mean age 60.0, range 28–88) with invasive breast cancer were evaluated prospectively. IVIM parameters (flowing blood volume fraction [fIVIM] and pseudodiffusion coefficient [D*]) and non-Gaussian diffusion parameters (theoretical apparent diffusion coefficient [ADC] at a b value of 0 s/mm2 [ADC0] and kurtosis [K]) were estimated using a diffusion-weighted imaging series of 16 b values up to 2500 s/mm2. Shifted ADC values (sADC200–1500) and standard ADC values (ADC0–800) were also calculated. The Kaplan–Meier method was used to generate survival analyses for DDFS, which were compared using the log-rank test. Univariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess any associations between each parameter and distant metastasis-free survival.Results: The median observation period was 80 months (range, 35–92 months). Among the 101 patients, 12 (11.9%) developed distant metastasis, with a median time to metastasis of 79 months (range, 10–92 months). Kaplan–Meier analysis showed that DDFS was significantly shorter in patients with K > 0.98 than in those with K ≤ 0.98 (P = 0.04). Cox regression analysis showed a marginal statistical association between K and distant metastasis-free survival (P = 0.05).Conclusion: Non-Gaussian diffusion may be associated with prognosis in invasive breast cancer. A higher K may be a marker to help identify patients at an elevated risk of distant metastasis, which could guide subsequent treatment.

Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of radiation protection training among medical students using X-ray equipment.Methods: Medical students attended a training class in diagnostic radiology. This training class began with a lecture on radiation protection, followed by experiments to measure the radiation dose. At the beginning and end of the training class, participants answered five-choice questions regarding the three principles of external radiation protection and the dose reduction rate of the lead apron. We also asked participants to provide free-text answers regarding what they learned from the training class and then conducted a text-mining analysis.Results: In the question regarding the three principles of external radiation protection, only 86% of students correctly answered “time” before the training class, but almost all respondents answered the question correctly after the training class. Before the training class, 81% of the students answered that the shielding rate of the lead apron was 95%, but after the training class, almost all students answered correctly that the shielding rate was 80%. Text-mining showed a co-occurrence network consisting of 10 subgraphs from the frequently occurring words.Conclusion: Having the students conduct measurement experiments on their own was effective for improving their understanding of radiation protection.

This study investigated the effect of single-boiling crystallization of high-yielding sugarcane on sugar and molasses production on a factory-plant scale compared with triple-boiling crystallization of conventional sugarcane. The sugar extraction at the roll-milling process was similar between high-yielding sugarcane KY01-2044 with high fiber and conventional sugarcane NiF8. The weight of sugar yield per sugarcane decreased by 32.6 % compared with the conventional system, whereas the yield of molasses and bagasse increased by 143.1 % and 11.5 %, respectively. The results indicated that sugar, molasses, and bagasse-derived electricity could increase simultaneously when the yields of high-yielding sugarcane were higher by a factor of 1.5 than conventional levels. Furthermore, A-molasses obtained by a single-boiling crystallization had less coloration and better fermentability and operability than conventional C-molasses. In conclusion, this study showed that combining high-yielding sugarcane and single-boiling crystallization could increase sugar production and generate high-quality molasses suitable for biofuel and bagasse-derived electricity production.
