Conjugate substitution reaction of α-(halomethyl) acrylates that proceeds in addition-elimination (SN2’) mechanism is attractive for polymer chemists, because it undergoes under ambient conditions in quantitative yields to afford α-(substituted methyl) acrylates. In this report, the conjugate substitution reaction is applied to elemental reactions in polymer chemistry, including termination of stereospecific living anionic polymerization, polycondensation, and main chain scission.

For issues of energy crisis and global environmental pollution by greenhouse gases, polymers based on renewable resources have become increasingly important, contributing to building sustainable society. This review deals with recent development of bio-based polymers. Practical issues of biomass plastics, new biomass plastics, production of common plastics from biomass, polymeric materials from natural polymers, and plant oil-based polymers are mentioned.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been central materials in the field of nanotechnology and nano-materials science due to their remarkable physical, physicochemical, thermal, mechanical and electrical properties. One of the key issues in the utilization of such seminal materials for basic researches together with the material applications is to develop a methodology to solubilize/disperse them in solvents since as-synthesized CNTs form tight bundled structures due to their strong van der Waals interaction (0.9 eV/nm) and are insoluble in many solvents. Solubilization/dispersion techniques can be categorized mainly into two methods, namely, ‘chemical’ and ‘physical’ modification. Solubilization/dispersion of CNTs based on the physical adsorption of dispersant molecules possesses several advantages such as the ease of preparation process and maintaining the intrinsic CNT properties, which show sharp contrast with the chemical modification. In this review article, general strategies for CNT solubilization as well as the applications of solubilized CNTs are described.

An all weather running track is the common term to describe a rubberized artificial running surface for the sport of track and field athletics. In this article, history, structure-property relationship, and recent progress of the surface material in the all weather running track were reviewed.The first all weather running track was developed in the middle of 1960’s under the trade name of “Tartan tracks”, and in 1967, it was installed in Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Though several coliseum introduced such tracks, it was turned to be clear that the durability of the surface material was not high enough against the Japanese weather. Since then new surface materials composed of mainly polyurethane has been developed. In these days, inner structure of the truck as well as surface materials were chosen to contribute to the safety and amenity for the athletes and to the new records.

In this review, I introduce the microstructures and optical properties of angle-independent structurally coloured barbs of blue birds, then describe the fabrication and the optical nature of the artificially prepared imitations of such biological systems.

Destruction is a usual phenomenon in the trouble of rubber and plastic products, in particular fatigue fracture is frequently found in the case of vulcanized rubbers. Observation of fracture surface, that is fractography, is not reliable technique in the field of rubbers and plastics, even though it is well known method as the first step of accident analysis. Supporting evidence, such as results of surface analysis on the fracture and molecular weight measurement of damaged part, is necessary as well as the observation of fracture surface. There are some techniques against the fatigue fracture, for instance, increasing the radius of curvature of products and the amount of antioxidants.

We have developed highly functional bioplastics: polylactic acid (PLA) composites to be used in electronic products. While fully preserving its environment-friendly properties (high biomass-based component ratio and safety), we have improved PLA's practicability, and also added values to it by endowing it with desirable new properties. A heat resistant PLA compound containing the fiber of Kenaf and other safe additives mainly made with biomass has been developed (the biomass content in the resin part: 90%). The PLA composite began to be used in the housings of a cellular phone. Having also successfully achieved a flame-retardant PLA composite with a safe metal hydroxide as a heat absorbance and a phenol type charring agent, we now plan to expand its use for personal computer housings, etc. in near future. Furthermore, we have developed new functional PLA composites to create new applications of bioplastics. A PLA composite that combines shape memory and recyclability has been performed by thermo-reversibly cross-linking PLA. The composite has opened up possibilities for wearable electronic equipments. Also, a highly heat-conductive PLA composite with a cross-linked carbon fiber can solve heat-release issues caused with the latest mobile electronic equipments with thin thickness. The composite has realized heat diffusion higher than that of stainless steel.
