Homogeneous catalyses promoted by transition metal complexes such as cross coupling reaction, Mizoroki-Heck reaction, Tsuji-Trost allylation reaction,functionalization of C-H bond, Sharpless oxidation reaction, and some recent topics related to organotransition metal complexes are described. Mechanistic aspects of these reactions are also discussed based on the fundamental reaction patterns of organotransiton metal complexes. Future perspectives of organotransition metal catalyzed reactions are also described.

The principle of the spinodal decomposition (SD) is described in connection with the phase diagram of polymer-polymer mixture. Characteristic features of the structures developed via SD are the periodicity and the dual connectivity of decomposed-phases. The unique structure leads to high performance of the materials. In polymer systems, SD can be induced by: (i) simple temperature drop (or jump) from 1-phase region to 2-phase region in the phase diagram and the isothermal annealing, (ii) the chemical reactions, such as polymerization and cure reaction, which cause the increase in molecular weight of the component, (iii) change in shear rate during melt-processing, such as extrusion and injection molding, (iv) solution casting of polymer blend (solvent evaporation), and (v) coagulation of polymer solution in non-solvent. Various examples of materials design by SD are shown.

主要なゴム, 合成ゴムの日常使われるブレンド系につき低温における緩和弾性率の挙動から相溶性を考察し, 特にNBR, CRのような耐寒性不良のゴムのブレンドによる低温性改善につき調査検討した.ブレンド系としては, NBR-NR, SBR, BR, CR-NR, SBR, BR, SBR-NR, BR-SBR につき検討した.<BR>代表的なNR-NBR系につき, 凍結破断面のレプリカ法による電子顕微鏡写真から, NRの海相中に直径数μ程度のNBRの島相が浮かぶミクロ不均一分散系を推定し, しかもNBR分率0.6~0.8間に海相, 島相が転相することを確認した.緩和弾性率の温度依存性からも両相は明らかに分離しているが, 単純海島機械混合系とはやや挙動が異なり, この点につき考察した、扱ったブレンド系のうちNR-CR, NBR-BR, NBR-SBR, CR-SBR, CR-BRはNR-NBRとほぼ同様な挙動を示す2相分離系であり, SBR-BRは相溶性良好で, NR-SBRはそれらの中間を示した.以上の結果から, ブレンドゴムの低温挙動およびNBR, CR, SBR, などのNR, BRブレンドによる耐寒性改善法につき考察した.<BR>また低温におけるNRやCRの結晶化硬化を防ぐ具体的な良法は現在ないが, 相溶性良好な非結晶性ゴムをブレンドすることにより, 著しく結晶化速度がおそくなることがわかった.

各種市販有機ゴム薬品 (酸化防止剤, 加硫促進剤等) をBRおよびSBR-イオウ加硫系に配合した加硫物, およびそれら薬品を含まないBR-オキシム, 過酸化物加硫物 (いづれもHAF配合) をCo-60γ線で照射し, 前報と同様にその放射線劣化防止能力について検討した。その結果次のことがわかった。<BR>1) BR加硫物は1×10<SUP>8</SUP>γで, SBR加硫物は5×10<SUP>7</SUP>γで急激に100%引張応力が増加し, 典型的な橋かけ型ポリマーであることがわかった.<BR>2) アンチラッドを添加するとその性質は若干改善されるがアンチラッドを添加した際でもBRは5×10<SUP>7</SUP>γ~1×10<SUP>8</SUP>γで, SBRは1×10<SUP>8</SUP>~5×10<SUP>8</SUP>γで急激に機械的性質は低下した.<BR>3) 一般にアンチラッドを添加した場合その効果がNRの場合に比して顕著であった.<BR>4) 窒素中と空気中照射の100%引張応力の変化率に大きな差はなかった.<BR>5) BRのイオウ加硫物に対してGMF加硫物Dicup加硫物はNRのそれと同じ傾向を示していることがわかった。

Temporary flat tire repair kit is one of the most interesting technologies spreading in the car equipment trends, and is going to be equipped more and more because the kit occupies the less space in the vehicles than that of the old-fashioned spare tire, making the inside space of the car to be utilized more freely. In this paper, authors describe commercially available repair kits for passenger car from the viewpoint of technical development. These kits can be classified by the mechanism of repairing a puncture and the discharging way of the sealant into the inside of the tire. Typical requirements for the sealant and formulation have been reviewed. In addition, the latest development for enhancing user and environmental friendly system has also been introduced.

ESR measurements under tensile deformation of vulcanized rubber were carried out by the combination of homebuilt stretching machine with commercially available ESR spectrometer. The changes of radical concentrations during tensile deformation were successfully evaluated by this technique. It was found that the destruction and re-construction of crosslinking structure developed in the samples were well correlated with the changes of radical concentrations during tensile deformation. That is, the broken crosslinking structure by stretching was partly recovered in the sample crosslinked by sulfur. On the other hand, such behavior was minor in the sample crosslinked by peroxide.

Recently, the degree of attention of 3D printer increases and its use has been spreading. 3D printers taken up here are as follows; stereo lithography, selective laser sintering, ink jet printing, fused deposition molding, and laminated object manufacturing. Can 3D printer change Japan’s manufacturing industry? It is described about the foundation and application whether it is fit for what kind of use. The examples of the application is raised in the following; produce (rapid manufacturing, on-demand parts, inspection), create (model, capture, sculpt), measure (precision metrology, inspection reporting, 3D documentation), prototyping (design verification, functional validation), and others.

The polarizer is an indispensable optical element to liquid crystal display (LCD). PVA-iodine polarizer is utilized to various LCD widely for the excellent optical property. The PVA-iodine polarizer is prepared by stretching and dyeing PVA with iodine. The characteristic of PVA-iodine polarizer is controlled by quantity and orientation of two complexes of I3– and I5–. The technologies and the technical trends of polarizer for LCD are introduced.

The wet grip performance of tires is decreased when the rolling resistance is reduced by the change of the tread rubber compound.The wear rate also becomes faster when the wet grip performance is improved. From these facts it is difficult to solve the trade-off between these performances.In recent years silica filled compounds are widely used as tread rubber to solve the trade-off between wet performance and rolling resistance.However, we have to develop new other methods due to the limitation in achieving the further improvement od these performances by means of the tread rubber development.In this paper the method for the improvement of the braking performance was described using structural mechanics of tires.

Pyrolysis infrared spectroscopy system using a pyrolysis probe has been developed for the rapid identification of waste rubbers containing a large amount of carbon black. This system consists of a pyrolysis probe, flexible and heatable gas guide, FT-IR, and computer. The small area of the surface of a plastic part is pyrolyzed momentarily with the pyrolysis probe, and the gaseous pyrolyzate is carried with nitrogen gas cell in FT-IR, the type of plastic is then identified with the IR spectra of the pyrolyzate. This method has the following features; (1) Almost all kinds of waste rubbers used for automobile parts can be identified in a few seconds. (2)Samples do not need to be carried. (3)Surface degradation and stains do not affect the identification. And (4) automatic identification system using this technique has made it possible to identify rubbers by only one action. The application of this method to the identification of weather-strips which had been collected from scrapped cars has confirmed that this method is useful for sorting before devulcanization process of waste rubbers.

Natural rubber is one of the most important polymers produced by plants because it is strategic raw material used in more than 40000 products including the tire. It is focused as carbon neutral industrial material because it is synthesized from atmospheric CO2. Among over 2500 rubber producing plant species, the Para rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) is presently the only commercial source of natural rubber. There are some unknown points about the detail of natural rubber biosynthesis. The objective of this review is to provide readers with information on the newest trends of the natural rubber and Para rubber tree research from standpoint of biochemistry and molecular biology.
