The lumbago which in Oriental medical terms is said to be caused by a KI-KETSU circulatory disturbance is in some districts known as colic. When this lumbago in which the cause is unclear in Western medicine is examined from a meridian viewpoint to determine in which meridian the disturbance is most prevalent, it is found, analyzing categorically with the 4 diagnostic methods (Yonshinpo), dermal thermometers, heat sensitivity, etc., that in most cases the disturbance is evident in the meridians of the lower extremities. Comparative analysis of two types of therapy, local therapy which involved the use of local Bladder Meridian points, BL-20, BL-22, BL-23, BL-25, BL-47 and supplementary therapy in which points from along the affected meridian were used, was carried out. Supplementary treatment points included:Stomach Meridian: ST-25, ST-36Spleen-Pancreas Meridian: SP-16, SP-6Gall Bladder Meridian: GB-25, GB-39Liver Meridian: LV-14, LV-3Bladder Meridian: BL-54, BL-61Kidney Meridian: KI-16, KI-9A comparison of therapeutic results indicated better results were obtained when the supplementary therapy was added.

“-Concerning the Essence of the Meridians”- without a background of understanding and perception of the structural, motor and physiological functions of the living body it is not easy to discuss this theme. I would like to present my opinions from the point of view of the theory of ZOFU (visceral) meridianology, major in physical function as explained by Oriental medicine.1) Discussion of Ancient Medical TextsCentered on the writings of the SOMON, REISU and NANGYO, discussing the meridian points from the aspect of KI, the central teaching is that the meridian points are the “windows of KI.”2) Relationship with the MeridiansUntil the present the meridian points have been related with the meridians and the front-back body theory. For example, the selection of GV-20 for the treatment of hemorrhoids, LI-4 for the treatment of facial carbuncles and BL-54 for the treatment of lumbago, has been explained by the induction and distant part function theories, however, ignoring the fact that these points exist on their specific meridians it becomes impossible to explain these functions. With an understanding of the meridian paths and the areas these control this explain is easily accomplished.3) Clinical ApproachAccepting the GOZORUPU concept as functional anatomy, the meridians as the physiological function of KI, the meridian points as the windows of KI, the acpuncture-moxibustion concepts as Oriental medicine, and applying these in the clinic it is possible to obtain most clinical results.More concretely using brushing acupuncture methods (TOHOKUKAI style) one of 9 types, tonification acupuncture at LV-8 for liver deficiency, at KI-7 for kidney defificiency, at SP-3 for spleen deficiency, major complaints are relieved or may disappear completely.I shall introduce a sample pattern and present my opinions.4) The Essence of the Meridian PointsTouching on in addition to the above the point selection theory and meridian characteristics I'd like to conclude that the essence of the meridian points is indeed their status as the windows of KI.

Acupuncture needles were inserted and artificially broken in subcutaneous and muscle tissues in rats. Movement of the needles in the body and histo-pathological changes thus induced were studied in this experiment.<br>The needles moved in the body most often within 2 weeks of the beginning of experiments. The movement was observed more frequently in the needles buried in the foreleg than in other parts of the body. It was supposed that the movement was related to the motility of this part. The thin or short gold needles moved least of all. In contrast, stainless steel needles moved more actively, sometimes being found in the internal organs, such as the liver, testicles, heart and spermatic duct. Most of the needles remaining in the body were encapsulated in connective tissues after several weeks.<br>General implications of the buried needles for a organism were discussed from the histopathological point of view.

We previously reported on needle damage to needles sterilized 50 times. This time we increased the number of sterilizations to 100 times and investigated needle damage. damage.Sterilization was performed using a small high pressure steam sterilizer at a temperature of 126°C for 25 minutes each time.1. Non-gold or silver needles had a tendency to become finer but there was no remarkable weight change noted.2. Resistance to bending tests showed that Chinese needles become more difficult to break.3. Elasticity tests showed that non-gold needles become easier to restore to their original state.4. Insertion tests showed that some needles, especially Chinese needles and stainless steel No. 3 needles, become more difficult to insert smoothly.5. Hardness and sturdiness tests showed a general decrease in both factors with the exception of hard silver No. 3 needles and Chinese needles which become sturdier.
