The train positioning system by means of the ATS beacon used in the pendulum car requires sorting out the ATS beacon and updating the in-vehicle database according to the relocation of ATS beacons. Under the method proposed, track curvature data calculated by means of dividing the yaw rate of the carbody by the running speed are held as the on-board database, and the position of the train is detected based on the comparison with the track curvature data during running. In this case, applying a spatial filter improves detection accuracy and reduces database updating frequency. This paper presents the outline of the system and the detection accuracy.

The authors propose the idea of ultra-high-frequency rail network timetabling. In such a timetable, the scheduled trains will take very diverse routes on a given rail network to meet the diverse needs of the passengers and to enable ultra-high-frequency train operation. However, at junctions where two or more lines meet, the level crossing interference between different railway tracks will form the bottleneck for the realisation of such high train frequency. The typical example of this can be seen at crossovers between fast and slow lines on the quadruple track railway paired by use. To reduce such level crossing interference, the authors propose the simultaneous crossovers of two trains in both directions at crossover tracks, and the installation of multiple crossover tracks at one junction for realtime selection of the optimal route. In this paper, the authors present the detailed calculation of headways between trains at this kind of crossover tracks, which will form the basis of the authors’ future research into their ideas.

Large overshoot sometimes occurs during use of air-spring car-body tilting by which a car-body is tilted using inflated or deflated air-springs. The large overshoot causes the contact loss between the pantograph and the contact wire. Therefore, we developed a controlling method of the overshoot by using the vertical motion damper equipped in parallel with the air-spring. The detail of the vertical motion damper, the controlling effect of the damper on the overshoot, and the overview of the running test is described in this paper.

In this research, we investigate an adaptability of drivers to a personal mobility vehicle (PMV) using lean mechanism. In order to evaluate PMV with a lean mechanism considering driver's feeling, the purpose is to establish an evaluation method in human-car system. Experiments were conducted with multiple vehicle characteristics using a driving simulator. In this report, we analyzed for the steering angle focused on the input of the driver. First, it was confirmed that the steering angle really obtained with DS depends on the steering characteristics. Next, we confirmed that the tendency of the trajectory was different from the difference in equivalent preview time. Finally, the frequency characteristics of the adjustable steering were examined. As a result, there was a difference in reproducibility. And this difference may be a method of expressing driver characteristics.

When driving on a narrow L-shaped road, there are situations where a K-turn combining forward turning and backward turning is necessary. And in some cases, repetitive K-turn are required. The purpose of this research is to propose an automatic driving method for narrow L-shaped roads that includes K-turn, which is often difficult for drivers. The vehicle trajectory is generated geometrically based on the road and vehicle characteristics. When repetitive K-turn are required, the trajectory is divided into three phases: first forward turning (1st phase), repetitive K-turn (2nd phase), final forward turning (3rd phase). Trajectory are generated in the reverse order of the order in which vehicle run. By conducting driving simulations, we confirmed that the proposed method can be used for automatic driving on narrow L-shaped roads.

East Japan Railway Company (JR East) developed the hybrid system with the diesel engine and the lithium-ion battery, and began operational service of the world' s first hybrid diesel railcar Ki-Ha E200 in July 2007. This hybrid system could decrease the negative environmental impact of the diesel railcar. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery is selected for the storage battery because of high power and energy density. The deterioration investigation of the storage battery was executed in September 2009 and it is suggested the longevity might be extended for several years from this investigation.

To improve of the riding quality, three measures, yaw damper between cars, non linear air spring and height change of traction device (mono-link) connection was tested on the E2-1000 Shinkansen vehicle. In this paper, it is shown that the results of running tests, for example, the difference with the riding quality level of conventional and new item.

Traffic accidents caused by the pedal operation error by the elderly drivers have become social problem, for example the collision with structure, vehicle or pedestrian. It is generally known that due to the weakening of the flexibility of the elderly's body, the angle at which the knees are placed inside decreases. As the result, in the sitting posture of elderly drivers, there is a difference in the posture of the legs with non-elderly drivers. This may be the hypothesis that it is one of the major causes of the increase in pedal operation errors by them. In this study, we focused attention on the posture of the leg when parking the vehicle with backward movement, and visually checked the sitting posture of the driver's leg and the behavior of the right foot, the driving in simulating the rearward turning motion experimentally verified by twisting the waist of a person. As this check, it is clarified the relationship between the posture of driver's leg or right foot and the foot location area on the brake pedal, which are assumed making effects of pedal operation error.
