In order to maintain stable printing and avoid printing troubles during UV (Ultra-Violet) curable printing, it is important to understand the curing reaction both on the surface and within the ink films. In this study, the depth profile of offset printing ink films (with a thickness of a few micrometers) on coated paper was analyzed non-destructively from the surface side using confocal Raman microscopy (CRM). Spatial resolution of 0.2 um was obtainable using an oil lens. As a result, the structure of offset ink layers could be evaluated in detail. In addition, the UV curing reaction of overlapping multicolor offset inks could be estimated using CRM techniques. Moreover, the three-dimensional distribution of ink components in multicolor offset printing could be also visualized.

Principles of halftone screening methods with conventional halftone screens and both rational and irrational tangent types of halftone dot generators are described. Quality problems of halftone images produced by dot generators and methods of fixing them, tone reproduction of halftone processes and dot gain of printed halftone images, features of ultra-fine screens and FM screens such as increase of resoulution and color saturation and elimination of moire, etc, are also discussed.

The development of the recent ink jet printing technology is remarkable for the quality of printing. It has the imaging quality as well as photograph has. Dye has been used for ink so far. However, dye has weak points about tolerance to water and color fastness to light. It is the driving force to change dye inks to pigment inks. However, the needs of the water based pigment inks decrease to develop UV inks or Solvent inks. In addition, the improvements of fastness to light for dye have promoted the decreasing. A turning point comes for the water based pigment inks. This paper describes such a situation of the water based pigment inks.

Fujitsu has launched world first film based color e-paper in 2005 and has been continuing improvement especially on its size, resolution and optical characteristic. In this issue, we would like to introduce principle of cholesteric liquid crystal e-paper, feature of 8-inche and 12-inche panels, and the device which we adapted our e-paper panel.

Concerning an optical card and an optical card drive which writes information on the optical card and reads information recorded on the optical card, the topics of their technology through application are discussed to provide the whole idea of optical card systems. Firstly their development history, various kinds of optical cards, the principle of writing and reading, the structure of the optical card and the optical card drive and the features of optical card systems are provided. Secondly their applications, the present stage of the experiments and realization and a sample of optical systems in the retail field are introduced. and the trend in their future is discussed. Lastly the standardization of optical cards, the current task, is mentioned.

In this paper, we describe the current status and issues of e-book services in Japanese public libraries. Currently, e-book services have only been introduced in 30 public libraries. Many issues have already been identified, including clarification of accounting standards for e-books, standardization of public library systems and publisher contract rules regarding e-books, guarantee of the public library budget regarding e-book service, increase of genres and title numbers of e-books by publishers, improvement of accessibility function of e-books, and so on. In the future, in order to nurture the spread of e-book services in public libraries, cooperation between public libraries, publishers, wholesale e-booksellers, and system vendors is important.

Facing 600th anniversary of Gutenberg's birth in 2000 A.D., we should look back the historical significance of letterpress technology and take a step forward into new age of digital imaging. Now imaging technology plays a leading role in visual communication, but meets severe assessment to satisfy human vision. Not only advances in high precision and high definition digital media, but also "Intelligent Image Processing" technologies will be necessary for more aesthetic and pleasant imaging. Collaboration with human vision software and development in content-based algorithm are expected to advance the next generation color imaging technology for multi-media. This paper introduces four challengeable topics on "Adaptive Image Sharpening", "Retinex-based Appearance Improvement", "Bi-deirectional Gamut Mapping", and "Scene-referred Pleasant Color Reproduction".

It is not still enough to make interchangable Japanese documents of which composition result are equalized, though Japanese Industrial Standards for coded character set, file structure, markup language, font information interchange, and so on, have been already established as the Japanese electronic document interchange. Therefore, JIS X 4051 “Line Composition rules for Japanese Documents” has been independently established since 1993 for lateral business documents, and now, it is scheduled to be revised in 1995 for general Japanese documents. This report introduces a summary of JIS X 4051.

In 1990, 5. 25 “mageneto-optical disk (MO) was released on the market, conforming to ISO standard. After that, 5.25 MO has been steadily growing up and doing a great deal as a file-server application for workstation so called auto-changer. On the other hand, right after 3.5” MO (230MB) following 128MB had been introduced, 3.5 “MR market has been rapidly becoming popular due to reasonable prices and inprovements of drive functions. The future status of 3.5” MO whose maket expantion is expected is mainly described including the technologies for higher recording density.

Inkjet textile printing and IC marking devices are examples of the latest advances in industrial inkjet applications. The use of the inkjet textile printing technology is spreading in the Italian high-quality cloth market because of its ability to cater to on-demand printing requirements while providing excellent quality. For example, Monnalisa, which has specific colored inks and requires an integrated, densely-packed print head, has successfully achieved high-grade print quality even for high production rates. It will produce the expected result in markets in other nations provided users take interest in the promotion of digitalization for small-lot production. Inkjet IC marking devices have the advantage of being able to produce damage-free ICs, while printing images having good visibility and providing the on-demand printability feature. For example, IP2000 is printed on with visible white ink that is used in combination with UV and heat cure systems. This technology will evolve suitably to enable its use with small IC chips or thinned array packages in the near future. Inkjet technology is said to have a wide range of existing and potential applications in the industrial sector. As inkjet technology progresses, it appears that further progress in this technology requires simultaneous advances in the peripheral technology that enhances the overall inkjet printing system.

Using vegetable origin materials, the synthesis of a new polysilane modified alkyd resin was carried out to produce functional biodegradable polymer materials. Polysilane was added during the transesterification step or the condensation polymerization step. We observed that the rheological properties of the resulting alkyd resins were markedly changed.

Paper money was born as a substitute for metal money in distant commercial transactions. With its denominations eventually becoming fixed numbers, it developed into a currency used by a large number of unspecified people. As the circulation of paper money increased, counterfeiters began to try their hands at producing more. Anti-counterfeiting measures became an important factor in paper money production. Anti-counterfeiting technologies have been improved dramatically over the years: today, color- and pattern-shifting elements are used to make counterfeiting harder and counterfeited money easier to spot in a new technological environment.

Since the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties was established in 1950, our country has been producing a record of intangible cultural properties, which are characterized as non-physical objects to be protected, as well as tangible cultural properties. The details of the movement of intangible cultural properties could not be recorded because papers were mainly used for recording. Videotapes or DVDs have recently become popular, thus enabling the recording of intangible cultural properties. The method of recording the on-stage performances of professionals in national theaters is applied to the recording of intangible cultural properties. However, as for the intangible cultural properties succeeded by local festivals, discussions on how they should be preserved have just begun, and there are as yet only a few places to store and exhibit them.

Preferred color reproduction and factors influencing on it are reviewed in the case of flesh color. Preferred flesh color is determined by memory color. Memory color depends on panel's race, country and age, scene and season of the picture, model's age, sex and race, and picture or cartoon style. A variety of showing methods of samples for subjective evaluation and methods how to determine a numerical value of flesh color obtained from face area possessing various colors are described.

In response to labor shortages, smaller lots, increased type diversity, and shorter delivery schedules for printed matter, DAC ENGINEERING has provided high-speed, high-precision image processing and inspection systems that reduce defects, shorten time, and stabilize printing quality through automation and labor saving. Printing ink is a kind of printing materials, that is used for making image to substrate, and has to keep printability for each, mimeograph, off set, gravure, flexo, and such-like. In addition, special ink has functions that stimulate five senses of people. So it is called “Functional ink” or “Added-values ink”. It is a good device with high functions, so it will give you a big help. However, it depends on the plan to use it whether you succeed or not. I show it as follows.

Artifact-metrics is an automated method of utilizing artifacts based on their measurable intrinsic characteristics such as microscopic random-patterns and the like which are inherently emerging in their manufacturing process. This method is a kind of sibling technology with Biometrics. This article describes an introductory overview of artifact-metrics with a list of examples including classical paper-based ones as well as a brand-new instance based on nano-photonics. An intrinsic characteristic is called an artifact-metric element. If an artifact-metric element has enough (1) individuality, (2) stability in capturing, (3) durability, and (4) clone-resistance then it can be applied to artifact-metric systems designed for (a) authentication and for (b) reproducing exact values. The former application is well studied and there are many actually used optical systems for plain or micro-magnetic-fiber-embedded paper. The latter application belongs to a relatively new field called physically unclonable functions, which is studied extensively in the context of semiconductor electronic circuits for cryptography.

折本は,印刷·出版·製本·宣伝広告·メーリング等で欠かせない役割をもつ.(1)書籍用頁折では4~32頁等が有り,手帳折では平行巻き16頁平行二つ折+直角巻き四つ折の16頁などがある.(2)商業印刷用折では,パンフレット/カタログ等の平行二つ折,カンノン折,ジグザグ折など,ダイレクトメ-ルは,A3用紙対応の平行二つ折+直角巻き三つ折などがある.(3)特殊折では,経本がジグザグ折加工され,地図は開閉しやすく折り皺の抑制を避ける折り方がされる.紙折機は手折りした折見本を広げて折部分を採寸して,給紙部・紙搬送部・羽折部の各寸法設定と紙厚ローラーギャップ調整を行う.この作業は10分~60分位時間を要するが最近ではコンピュ-タ制御が可能となっている.紙折機の加工方法は,平行折は羽折,直角折は羽折式とナイフ折式がある.
