Before the Japanese manga went global, it was adapted for each country. Even in the pirated editions, we can find specific adaptations in them, resulting from the need for printing. For example, the print style in which 4 pages are set into 1 page in China, and different craftsman who draw cover art for manga in Thailand. However, the most important problem to be solved was how to adapt manga, which involved reading from right to left, into the style of being read from left to right in languages such as English. This essay tells you how the book style of reading from right to left has become popular even in Western countries.

Developments in music printing by letterpresses were studied using several historical scores, i.e., score I printed by Gardano in Venice in 1575, score II printed by Gardano in Venice in 1679, score III printed by Ch. Ballard in Paris in 1679, score IV printed by Endter in Nuremberg in 1682, score V printed by F. Heptinstall in London in 1697, and score VI printed by Breitkopf & H ä rtel in Leipzig in 1799. Score I was printed using fonts similar to those invented by Ottaviano dei Petrucci in 1525. About 100 years after score I was printed, there were many differences in the scores in different cities (score II to V). The differences were studied to develop the next font, a mosaic-type font. Finally, the characteristics and typesetting of the mosaic-type font were clarified using score VI.

This year marks the 136th anniversary of Japanese railways. In 1872, Japan's first railway was constructed with the support of the United Kingdom, and adopted the British style not only for railcars and train service systems, but also for tickets and even business systems. "Koken" (hard type ticket), a train ticket made of thick paper, is rare sight these days, while "Nanken" (soft type ticket), a ticket purchased from automatic ticket machines or various card-type tickets have become the mainstream. The Tenri University Sankokan Museum houses one of the greatest transportation-related collections in Japan, mainly train tickets collected mainly train tickets by the late Fujio Yamamoto. In this article, I would like to introduce tickets style and changes in printing techniques through these collections and the ticket printing machines we have got recently.

This article discusses the historical and functional meanings of the technological transitions of character-composing for Chinese characters (katsuji), in terms of wooden movable types, lead movable types, phototype composing, and word processors. The word "katsuji" of Wan Zhen (1314) was used in conjunction with the word for metal movable type (1732) in the dictionary of the Chinese language edited by R. Morison (1822).This metal type composing was replaced with phototype composing, but phototype lost the movable function of type composing. This movable function was recovered by the word processor with Japanese "kana-kanji" conversion. Then, the DTP system replaced both metal type and phototype composing. The Wan Zhen-Gutenberg galaxy was completed with the introduction of digital word processors. Digital content made by the DTP system is utilized for many purposes: printed matter, digital books, magazines, and so forth. This situation shall probably continue into the future.

To be responsible stewards of our world, the industrial sphere is required to engage in environmental conservation, especially when it comes to climate change. This is true for all businesses, including those that produce digital and physical books: electronic-books (e-books) and paper-books (p-books) , respectively. Japan's printing related companies are developing Product Category Rules (PCRs) and participating in ISO international standardization for the carbon footprint of products (CFP) regarding e-book and p-book production. In this report, I will introduce the activities the printing industry in Japan is engaging in to monitor and control environmental impact. Because printing is utilized for many products, the printing industry needed to establish a PCR for calculating CFP. The "Publishing & Commercial Printing (work in process) " PCR was established in 2009 and later revised in 2014 in order to reduce collecting data for calculation due to the spread of CFP. A PCR for e-media, including e-books, was established in 2013. The ISO international standard for CFP of print media products, including p-books, was published in 2013; a similar standard for e-media is under development. Comparing the life cycle assessment (LCA) results of e-books and p-books showed the hot spots for each value chain.

Among packaging materials, plastics have the advantages of being thin, lightweight, robust, bendable, flexible, and are applicable to a variety of shapes. However, plastics also have several disadvantages, including those due to oxygen and water vapor barrier properties. The barrier properties of plastics are extremely important, in particular, from the viewpoint of the shelf life of packaged food products and medicines. The oxygen barrier is necessary to suppress deterioration of food due to oxidation during storage. Moreover, the water vapor barrier is necessary to prevent moisture loss. This review presents the fundamentals of gas barrier properties of plastic products for packaging applications.

Recently, smartphones and tablets have been used for collecting records of patients' compliance with drug regimens at medical sites. However, it is difficult for many elderly patients to operate these devices. Most medical facilities are also unable to prepare and distribute these devices to all patients. In this study, we have introduced a novel and simple electronic device system to evaluate its usefulness to patients. This new device is a paper card device equipped with an electric circuit board and a memory chip, which is employed to record the times at which patients take medications and the patients' condition. These simple paper electric devices have the potential to be used in various scenarios for monitoring medical and daily life activities. Using the new devices would enable effective and cost-effective medical care.

This topic of high value-added printing is quite common. Wide color gamut printing attracts attentions recently. There are seven-color printing and six color process printing as a representative of the wide color gamut printing. I explain a DIC six color system for an example about the status and problems of six-color process printing.

This study aims to develop a valid and reliable questionnaire to evaluate the personal ability to use handwriting skills in everyday life and the workplace. The sample comprised 1,065 office workers who responded to a questionnaire, which was designed to understand how they use handwriting, how they understand the effect of handwriting, and how they select stationery to write. Factor analysis revealed the following seven factors: (1) communication through handwritten messages, (2) utilization of diagrams and illustrations, (3) affinity for pen and paper, (4) usage of various writing tools, (5) affinity for their own handwriting characters, (6) note-taking skills, and (7) understanding the value of handwriting skills. Based on the analysis, we developed a “handwriting ability scale,” which consists of the seven subscales. We also analyzed how the handwriting ability score differs according to gender, age, academic qualifications, and occupation. We believe this scale can be used to promote the use of handwriting and as a marketing tool for selling stationery products.

These days, soft proof, which checks color images of printed matter on a monitor, is widely used in the field of graphic arts. In order to provide high quality soft proofing system, it is necessary to calibrate the tone reproduction curve and the chromaticity of white point of a monitor to desire characteristics and to make an ICC display profile. In such a background, we developed a method to calibrate them with low cost and high quality by visual calibration. This paper reports the principle and calibration accuracy of our method. In general, it is well known to adjust brightness of a continuous tone image with that of a binary image on a monitor for calibrating tone reproduction curve of the monitor. On the other hand, our method adjusts brightness and hue of three continuous tone images to those of binary images. As a result, our method can calibrate nonlinear tone curve of LCD accurately. In addition, our method can be applied to many viewing illumination conditions, because our method adjusts a color of white point of the monitor to that of target paper under a viewing illumination. Three experiments using three different LCDs were done to test the calibration accuracy of our method. The results of the experiment show the monitors calibrated by our method have enough accuracy for soft proof.

First we consider the impact of ICT and digitization on the evolution of the prepress industry. The fourth industrial revolution is underway right now. Its major elements, IoT, Big Data, robots, and artificial intelligence, have caused a great wave of technological innovation. At the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, this breakthrough is credited with moving industries “from mass production and uniform service to customized production and service tailored to individual needs.” This is exactly the sort of situation that raises questions about printing industry's structure and strategy. In this paper, we outline the evolution of prepress procedures and show how the correlation between progress and elemental technology has changed printing. To discuss the past ten years of trends and future prospects, we also conducted a roundtable discussion on three key fields: desktop publishing and typesetting, color management, and workflow; the results are summarized below.

Tomakomai Mill, Oji Paper Co., Ltd. started operation in 1910. It was known back then as the largest paper mill in the East. It has greatly contributed to domestic paper supply for more than a hundred years. The mill has several facilities certified as a part of Modern Industrial Heritage Sites by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. These certified facilities are as follows. The hydraulic power plants by the Lake Shikotsu began operating in the same year as the mill's establishment and underwent many repairs and improvements over the years. The water channels from the lumberyard to the mill have been used for the transportation of logs, and the log-debarking equipment, called "Drum Barker," has been in operation since 1929. Both these facilities have long been essential for pulp production. Old buildings and structures standing on the mill site remind us of the founding days; some of them are still in use. These facilities indicate the development of paper industry in Hokkaido and some of them are still in operation. The paper machines have not been designated as industrial heritages; however, they have a long history of manufacturing and continuous construction or upgrading based on the request for optimal production configurations.

The postage stamp is a kind of security, although it is small both in size and face value. It is made by elaborate printing technologies and technologies that ensure the homogeneity of production, leading it to be called a "paper jewel" or a "small work of art." Postage stamps are convenient to use, aesthetically appealing and homogeneously produced: they are built not only using printing technologies, which are worth describing as an "art" form, but also on the basic technologies for papermaking, gumming, and perforation. The requirements for postage stamp production have also been changing through history and with the changing needs of their users.
