Crystallographic analysis of metal cultural heritages is one of important neutron applications, since nondestructive analysis is desired. We have been studying Japanese swords using the pulsed neutron imaging, and obtained position dependent information of crystallite size, anisotropy and lattice spacing. The results coincide with destructive studies, which indicated that the method was useful for the metal artifacts.

Free programs for the maximum-entropy method (MEM) and three-dimensional visualization are introduced with emphasis on their applications to TOF neutron powder diffraction data. The importance of correcting for thermal diffuse scattering is stressed to improving the accuracy of results obtained by powder diffraction.

This review reports an overview for DT/DD fusion based neutron sources, such as sealed portable neutron generators employing solid-targets, portable neutron generators based on inertial electrostatic confinement of plasmas, and relatively large stationary devices employing either solid- or gas-target with higher intensities. Though less intense than accelerator based neutron sources making use of other nuclear reactions, the DT/DD fusion based compact neutron sources with typically <1 m in length and <20cm in diameter are useful for some specific purposes with their distinct advantages such as portability, minimal gamma-ray byproducts, ability to provide mono-energetic neutrons, and tagged neutrons enabling three-dimensionally spatial resolved analyses. A next generation gas-target based volumetric neutron source has been proposed to extend its capability of neutron yield in excess of 1015 neutrons/sec in a compact configuration ~6 m in length for application to testing fusion reactor materials.

A new non-destructive multi-elemental analysis method using negative muon beam has been developed. This method is based on measurement of characteristic muonic X-rays emitted after muonic atom formation. Muonic X-rays are very hard because of a large mass of the muon, so elemental analysis for deeply inside of a bulk material is possible. In addition, because the muon stopping depth can be controlled by adjusting incident muon energy, three-dimensional analysis will be achieved. To develop this elemental analysis method, we performed muon irradiation experiment for two types of archeological samples; bronze artifacts (coin and mirror) for investigation of quantitative elemental composition and estimation of detection limit, and a gold coin (Tempo-koban) for demonstration of elemental depth-profiling without sample destruction.

Dynamical properties of lithium borate glass are studied by the measurements of complex heat capacity, ultrasonic velocity, Raman scattering and terahertz-time domain spectroscopy. The non-Debye nature of structural relaxation, anharmonicity and boson peak are discussed in relation with fragility.

PLANET is the first neutron powder diffractometer dedicated to high-pressure and high-temperature experiments in the world. The six-axis press designed for this beamline enables routine data collection at pressures and temperatures up to 10 GPa and 2000 ℃. In this article, we introduce how the PLANET had been constructed.

In this short note, I first look back the days when the Hamon, a membership journal of the Japanese Society for Neutron Science, had launched. The neutron scattering activities of those days for solid state physics are summarized. Then, a comparison is made to current situation. By an extrapolation, near-future prospect for the neutron scattering community will be analyzed.

We report topological magnetic phase transitions between skyrmion lattice state and hedgehog lattice state realized in cubic chiral magnets MnSi1-xGex. By performing small- and wide-angle neutron scattering experiments, we discover three different topological spin textures with variation of the lattice constant controlled by Si/Ge substitution: skyrmion lattice (x = 0-0.25) and two types of hedgehog lattices with four q-vectors (x = 0.4-0.6) and three q-vectors (x = 0.7-1.0). The variation of magnetic properties in MnSi1-xGex strongly suggests that short-period hedgehog lattices may be stabilized by conduction electron mediated exchange interactions, rather than Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We also discuss some recent theoretical proposals concerning the stabilization mechanism of the hedgehog lattices, which are related to high-order exchange interactions.

The biological mechanism of the physiological function such as the enzymatic reaction is well understood by studying protonation states of the catalytic polar amino acid residues, which can be identified by neutron protein crystallography. It is proposed that the protonation states should be systematically discussed from the view point of the pKa values of the amino acid residues in proteins. Several examples of the protonation states of the catalytic residues determined by neutron protein crystallography, such as serine proteases (trypsin, elastase, thrombin, & acromobacter protease I), insulin, hen egg white lysozyme, RNase A, and HIV-1 protease were introduced and discussed on the basis of the pKa values.

<p>We have developed a prototype time-resolved neutron imaging detector employing a micro-pattern gaseous detector known as the micro-pixel chamber (μPIC) coupled with a field-programmable-gate-array-based data acquisition system. Our detector system combines 100μm-level spatial and sub-μs time resolutions with a low gamma sensitivity of less than 10<sup>-12</sup> and high data rates, making it well suited for applications in neutron radiography at high-intensity, pulsed neutron sources. In the present paper, we introduce the detector system and present several test measurements performed at NOBORU (BL10), J-PARC to demonstrate the capabilities of our prototype. We also discuss future improvements to the spatial resolution and rate performance.</p>

CO molecules taken up in clathrate hydrates with structures I and II show highly disordered arrangements, which are hard to analyze by classical methods for structure refinement adopting split-atom models. Rietveld refinements followed by maximum entropy method analyses from TOF neutron powder diffraction data of CO clathrate hydrates made it possible to visualize doughnut- and die-like distributions of CO molecules in 512 and 51264 cages, respectively.

原研中性子小角散乱装置は改造3号炉実験利用棟の特性波長0.6nmガイド管の終端 (C3-2) に設置され、試料による冷中性子の前方方向小角度 (散乱角0.1~10°程度) への散乱を測定するものであり、これにより合金、高分子、及び生体中のメゾスコピックスケール (1-数10nm) の構造の研究が行える。既に中性子速度選別機の波長較正及び2次元ディテクタの較正も終了しており本格的な物性測定実験に入ったところである。定常炉では国内初の本格的な小角散乱装置であり汎用装置としては非常にまとまった装置であると自負している。特記すべき点としてはその冷中性子強度であり (6.2×10<SUP>8</SUP>cm<SUP>-2</SUP>sec<SUP>-1</SUP>C3-2ガイド出口、鈴木正年らによる)、構造の時間発展に対する研究においてもその威力を発揮することが期待される。実際、高分子試料の時分割測定では興味ある結果が得られつつある。またサンプルチェンジャー (リボルバータイプ) が年内に完成する予定となっておりこれにより測定効率の大幅な上昇が見込まれる。基本的なデータ解析プログラムはほぼ完成しており今後はこれらをプロシージャ化してユーザフレンドリな実験環境を整えて行くつもりである.
