Previous studies had examined the effect of continuous flash suppression (CFS) on static motion aftereffects (sMAE) only when the spatial frequency of the adaptation and test stimuli differed significantly, although sMAE are observed at maximum level when the spatial frequency of the adaptation and test stimuli are the same. The aim of this study was to investigate whether CFS suppresses spatial frequency-selective adaptation to motion stimuli by matching the spatial frequency of the adaptation and test stimuli at several spatial frequencies. It was examined whether sMAE occurred when the adaptation motion was invisible to the observer under CFS. Results showed that sMAE decreased under CFS when the spatial frequencies of the adaptation and test stimuli were the same at any spatial frequency, but the degree of decrease depended on the spatial frequency. This suggests that the suppression of CFS varies with spatial frequency.

Perceptual grouping has been examined mainly by presenting visual stimuli in a 2-D field. In this study, we examined the characteristics of perceptual grouping in 3-D space by utilizing virtual reality (VR) technology. We used an elongated thin cylinder as the basic element. Participants were asked to find a predefined target made of five cylinders among the 1000 cylinders in the VR space. The orientation of the five cylinders of the target was varied systematically. The participant could move their head or body freely while searching. We found that in the VR space, the observers were sensitive to the structure in which the elements were oriented in parallel with each other. This structure was difficult to find in the 2-D field. These results indicate that in a 3-D space, the elements are perceptually grouped by utilizing the information from head and body movements which was not available while searching for a target in the 2-D field.

This study investigated how properties of precedent stimuli affect the perceived temporal duration for the following stimuli by the use of an experimental methodology similar to a previous study’s, which found cue recruitment in depth perception (Backus & Haijiang, 2007). Participants viewed movies (Experiment 1) or static images (Experiment 2), which lasted for various durations. Each participant conducted 250 training trials and 250 test trials in alternation. In the training trials, duration of the movies or static images was consistent with retinal location. In the test trials, participants judged whether the duration of the stimuli, which were presented at one of the alternative locations in random order, corresponds to the short or long criteria. Results of two experiments showed no sign of cue recruitment based on Bayesian rule concerning with the stimulus location, while perceived duration was modulated by the duration of the immediately precedent stimulus in a contrasting manner.

We interviewed seven professional creators of visual images, on “vection.” Vection is an illusion of a visually induced self-motion perception. In Seno-Lab, previously we conducted three approaches to bridge between scientific psychologists and creators of visual images, i.e., vection-scene-database in Japanese animations, movies of vection stimuli used in the previous scientific articles and the movie of a scientific introduction of vection. Seven professional creators evaluated our approaches. We got a lot of hints for the further developments of our approaches from the results of these interviews. In the seven, three contemporary artists, one movie director, two designers and one photographer were included. They suggested the future tasks for our approaches to bridge the two different business fields.
