We examined how changes in participants' heart rate affect their estimation of time when listening to music. We manipulated participants' heart rate using a cycling task on an exercise bike and by varying the tempo of music. The heart rates of 48 participants were measured before and after the pedaling task on the exercise bike. One week later, they listened to the music and estimated the temporal duration (60 seconds) under the non-manipulated condition (without exercise) and heart rate manipulated condition (with exercise). The results showed that the duration of the music (60 seconds) was underestimated after light exercise and overestimated after strenuous exercise. These results suggest that the acceleration of the internal time mechanism due to an increase in the heart rate affects the perceived duration of time with relation to music.

In order to examine how the color of containers affect the taste intensities of drinks, participants evaluated the intensities of four basic tastes for various solutions, which was supplied with a colored container. Also, they evaluated subjective matching between colors and tastes. Analyses for the evaluated intensities of tastes showed that colors of container affect the tastes of drinks; bitterness was emphasized with black and green containers; sourness was emphasized with yellow container; saltiness was emphasized with pink container; sweetness reduced with black, blue, and green containers. We found that yellow container would emphasize the sourness for which participants evaluated as strongly matched with yellow while black, blue and green containers reduce the sweetness for which participants evaluated as negatively matched with those colors. These results suggest that the effects of color of container on taste intensities for inner drinks depend on the subjective matching between the color and taste.

This study investigated the basis of a right-side dominance in aesthetic arrangement. In experiment 1, in order to examine the effect of attended position in pictures on aesthetic arrangement, we manipulated the positions of the fixation points, which attract observer's attention, and centroids of triangle arrangement for three objects. Participants rated preference, balance, beauty and harmony by the use of seven points scale for each of the pictures. We found that participants evaluated highly aesthetic in viewing the pictures whose arrangement centroids were near to the fixated position. In experiment 2, in order to examine the effect of participant's dominant hand on aesthetic arrangement we presented the objects which the participants are willing to manually manipulate, or the object which they should avoid to manually touch for right-handed or left-handed participants. We found that right-handed participants evaluated highly aesthetic in viewing the pictures whose arrangement centroid was at right side, but left-handed participant did not.

This study investigated how the several factors of BGM (Background music) affected the time estimation . We composed 28 original music tunes with different tempo and notes. Twenty undergraduates estimated one minute by the use of the method of production while listening to a BGM. Results showed that participants underestimated the duration while listening to a tune with a slow tempo, whereas they overestimated while listening to the tunes with fast tempo. The participants overestimated the duration with the increment of the number of the notes per unit time and variety of a note. In addition, the music experiences influenced the auditory time estimation.

時間に関する知覚過程は、一義的な解のない不良設定問題を解決する過程とみなすことができる。すなわち、時間知覚は、時間進行のペースや事象間の間隔についての確かな情報がないのに、0次元もしくは0.5次元的に得られる諸事象についての知覚情報を一次元的な進行する時間軸上に位置付ける過程と見なすことができる。普段の時間知覚において、何らかの巧妙な方略を用いることによって知覚系はこの不良設定問題に一応の解を与えていると考えられる。本研究では、知覚系がこの不良設定問題解決に用いている方略を理解するために、時間に関する錯視、錯覚の特性を整理した。その上で、進行する時間軸上への諸事象の位置付けという不良設定問題解決のため、知覚系が、処理促進による遅延の短縮や、顕著な情報による引き込み的処理などの方略を用いていることを示した。

We have found that various cognitive biases would interfere with evacuation behavior during a disaster, and this have caused many casualties. In this study, we focused on the conformity bias, one of the cognitive biases, which is introduced by evacuation order sentences with information about other residences’ behavior, to facilitate evacuation behavior. In the experiment, we presented the evacuation order sentences, and pictures which depict the scene of disaster, or normal situation. Participants evaluated the degree of risk for the picture, and degree of necessity of evacuation from the scene. Our results demonstrated that the conformity bias would facilitate evacuation especially for the low-risk situation. In addition, we found that judgments of the need for evacuation can be predicted by the rating of the degree of danger, disaster experience, sense of crisis about disasters, and the other-personality-orientations of the participants.

Psychological researchers have pointed out that as the distance between a viewer and an object increases, the perceived size of the object becomes larger than the size predicted using the linear perspective. This phenomenon is called “size constancy”. The purposes of this study are to determine a magnification-rate function for rendering a graphic image to fit it with size and distance impressions obtained in real space observation at a given distance, and to assess the validity of the magnification-rate function for computer graphic images. In the first experiment, we investigated the perceived size of an object placed at different distances, ranging from 1 to 10 m (short distance conditions), and from 4 to 120 m (long distance conditions). We found that the Z-ratio function (Thouless, 1931) can predict the perceived size for an object under the short distance conditions; however, it failed to predict the perceived size under the long distance conditions. Therefore, we applied a logistic function to predict the perceived size of an object under both the short and long distance conditions. In the second experiment, we asked observers to rate the fit of the size and distance of a computer graphic image with the perceived size and distance of objects in a real space. The size and distance of objects in the graphic images were determined using the magnification-rate function in terms of the logistic function, or the conventional linear perspective. We found that the observers gave higher scores for the images generated using the magnification-rate function than those generated using the conventional linear perspective. These results indicate that the magnification-rate function obtained in this study is more useful than the linear perspective in rendering computer graphic images to fit the size and distance of objects in the images with the real space observation.

The impression of sharpness of body movements (Kire in Japanese) is critical for aesthetical evaluation of body movements in dance, gymnastics, and martial arts’ Kata. However, the basis of impression formation of sharpness has not been empirically investigated to date. This study was designed to clarify how body movements’ speed affected impression formation regarding body movements’ sharpness. We also examined the effects of unexpectedly fast body movements on impressions of sharpness. Participants rated the impressions of sharpness, subjective speed, and unexpectedness of body movements when viewing movies of Karate Kata performance. Multiple regression analysis and path analysis revealed that subjective speed and unexpectedness affected impressions of sharpness of body movements and that subjective speed also affected them through unexpectedness. These results suggest that manipulating the speed and unexpectedness of movements effectively enhances impressions regarding the sharpness of body movements.

This study investigated how properties of precedent stimuli affect the perceived temporal duration for the following stimuli by the use of an experimental methodology similar to a previous study’s, which found cue recruitment in depth perception (Backus & Haijiang, 2007). Participants viewed movies (Experiment 1) or static images (Experiment 2), which lasted for various durations. Each participant conducted 250 training trials and 250 test trials in alternation. In the training trials, duration of the movies or static images was consistent with retinal location. In the test trials, participants judged whether the duration of the stimuli, which were presented at one of the alternative locations in random order, corresponds to the short or long criteria. Results of two experiments showed no sign of cue recruitment based on Bayesian rule concerning with the stimulus location, while perceived duration was modulated by the duration of the immediately precedent stimulus in a contrasting manner.

In order to examine how the voluntary inspiration–expiration circle affect the effects of visual attention on target detection task, we conducted two experiment in which observers attended to the target location or non target location in terms of the cost–benefit method (Posner, 1980). In the experiments, observers performed target detection task during or after inspiration, or expiration. In the first experiment, a visual cue was presented to attract endogenous visual attention, or exogenous visual attention, while in the second experiment, visual cues were presented to attract both endogenous and exogenous attention. We found advantages of inspiration with the exogenous attention task, but advantages of expiration with the endogenous attention task. We discussed the implications of these results for appropriate respiratory control in the competitive sports.

Although previous studies have examined what kind of object arrangement could give observer beautiful impression, they have not achieved agreement. While some studies found observers' preference for the arrangements whose centroids were congruent with the center of the picture frame, the other studies found the observers' preference for the arrangement whose centroids were in the right side in the frame. The main purpose of this study is to solve this disagreement among previous studies. We conducted three experiments in which concreteness of the picture was manipulated, and observers rated their impression for the pictures with different centroid position. We used black circles (Experiment 1), concrete objects on white background (Experiment 2), and concrete objects on backgrounds of natural scenes (Experiment 3). Only in Experiment 3, we found that observers consistently preferred for the pictures whose centroid of the arrangement was in right side. Our results indicate that concreteness of the pictures caused the biased preferencefor the right side of the pictures.

本研究は,ベーシックデザイン教育(基礎デザイン教育)の分野横断的内容と参加型表現(造形)学習であることに着目した.理数系科目と連係させた実習課題を児童生徒に制作することによって理科や算数(数学)に関する興味・関心を高めることの可能性について,課題の考案や学習効果の定量的に評価することを目的とした.具体的な研究内容としては,同研究テーマの平成14年度からの研究成果を継続し,次の事項を行なった.1)つの実習課題を考案.2)小学生対象の実験授業の実施,及びインタビュー調査とその結果の統計分析による学習効果の明確化.3)画像処理計測による課題作品の定量的評価方法の検討.4)授業支援用Webサイトの制作.5)課題考案のための海外調査.6)研究成果の国内での発表,学術論文の投稿.研究成果として,a)実習課題については幾何学的形態の作図を行ない,それを実際に手でちぎって自由に2分割した形態をさまざまに組み合わせながら構成を考えさせた.その組み合わせをアイデアスケッチとして12個作図させ,その中から2個の形態を選択し,彩色する課題内容を考案した.また,ピクセルで描かれたキャラクターを四分木により符号化し,その符号から元のキャラクターを描く課題を考案した.b)考案課題の学習効果を調べるために小学生(山口県美東町立綾木小学校と同町立鳳鳴小学校の4年生〜6年生の12名)を対象としたに実験授業を4日間実施した.c)視覚心理に関係する講義の授業を1回実施した.d)インタビュー結果の統計分析は途中段階であるが,理数系科目への目的意識の変容と発想力,作画的造形力と興味と理数系科目への興味・関心との関連性が示された.e)評価項目の各色画に対する面積,明度,色相の「ばらつき」,構成エレメント間の「まとまり」,視覚的重心位置について課題作品を画像計測し,教育者の評価と相関関係の高い結果が得られた.f)実験授業の内容を小学校で実践することを目的とした教諭対象の授業支援用Webサイトの制作とユーザビリティテストを行なった.g)ベーシックデザインの教育者であったパウル・クレーに関する調査を行なった(スイス,ベルン).
