The inner core of Tropical Cyclone Lan was observed on 21-22 October 2017 by GPS dropsondes during the first aircraft missions of the Tropical Cyclones-Pacific Asian Research Campaign for the Improvement of Intensity Estimations/Forecasts (T-PARCII). To evaluate the impact of dropsondes on forecast skill, 12 36-h forecasts were conducted using a Japan Meteorological Agency non-hydrostatic model (JMA-NHM) with a JMA-NHM-based mesoscale four-dimensional data assimilation (DA) system. Track forecast skill improved over all forecast times with the assimilation of the dropsonde data. The improvement rate was 8-16% for 27-36-h forecasts. Minimum sea level pressure (Pmin) forecasts were generally degenerated (improved) for relatively short-term (long-term) forecasts by adding the dropsonde data, and maximum wind speed (Vmax) forecasts were degenerated. Some of the changes in the track and Vmax forecasts were statistically significant at the 95% confidence level. It is notable that the dropsonde-derived estimate of Pmin was closer to the real-time analysis by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) Tokyo than the RSMC Tokyo best track analysis. The degeneration in intensity forecast skill due to uncertainties in the best track data is discussed.

Typhoon Fengshen (2008) was marked by a persistent track toward the northwest, which was poorly predicted by an operational hydrostatic model, which indicated a significant northward bias. Using a global nonhydrostatic model with finer grid spacing, we have simulated a reliable track of this typhoon. The purpose of this study is to clarify the causes of the northward bias by comparing the output of the two models. This typhoon was marked by the asymmetry of rainfall concentrating in the downshear side. While both models could reproduce the asymmetric structure, a significant difference between them was found in the vertical structure. In the hydrostatic model, the vortex tilted to the downshear side with a displacement from lower to upper levels exceeding 100 km. This tilt was related to weak updrafts of, at most, 0.5 m s−1. Diagnosis using vorticity budget demonstrated that the tilt of the vortex resulted from a lack of vertical coupling that was too weak to withstand differential advection between the lower and upper levels. These results suggest the importance of reproducing inner-core updrafts for better track prediction of a typhoon in an environment with strong vertical shear.

In the western North Pacific, as a tropical cyclone (TC) translates northward and approaches the midlatitude jet region, a front is often observed to the northeast of the TC, especially in fall. Theoretically, a front accompanies positive vorticity in the lower troposphere because convergence of cross-frontal circulation generates positive vorticity. Horizontal winds accompanied by positive vorticity along a front can impact the TC track. This study estimates the influence of frontal positive potential vorticity (PV) on the TC track using reanalysis data for a case of TC Chan-hom (2020). Horizontal winds due to frontal PV (FPV) are calculated using PV inversion. The FPV produces west-southwesterlies around the TC center just after the FPV formation. Thereafter, it mainly produces northwesterlies. Steering flow due to the FPV displaces Chan-hom 50 km east-southeastward for 72 h.

This study examined 300 children aged 24-35 months to clarify expressive vocabulary development using the vocabulary checklist questionnaire. Children were classified into 4 periods: first period, 24-26 months; second period, 27-29 months; third period, 30-32 months; and fourth period, 33-35 months. We analyzed median and quartiles of expressive vocabulary and performed one-way analysis of variance to determine which periods differed significantly from other periods. As a result, median total expressive vocabulary was 238.0 in the first period, 423.0 in the second period, 508.0 in the third period, and 661.0 in the fourth period. A clear correlation was seen between total expressive vocabulary, noun vocabulary, verb vocabulary, adjective vocabulary and child age. No significant difference in total expressive vocabulary was evident between second and third periods. These results indicate an incubation period in which the expressive vocabulary is invariable. A significant difference was apparent between the second and third periods in the verb vocabulary, suggesting a qualitative change in the expressive vocabulary. However, the term of increasing verb vocabulary was shorter than that for the noun vocabulary, which previous studies have reported in children aged 18-30 months.

The detection properties of alkanes by proton-transfer-reaction plus switchable reagent ion mass spectrometry (PTR + SRI-MS) were investigated. Alkanes (RH) were commonly detected as R+ by PTR + SRI-MS using NO+ as the reagent ion, and detection sensitivities were comparable to those of aromatics observed by H3O+ ionization. It can be concluded that sensitive online measurement of multiple alkanes is possible by PTR + SRI-MS using NO+ as the reagent ion.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a genetic disease characterized by motile cilia dysfunction, mostly inherited in an autosomal recessive or X-linked manner. We herein report a 29-year-old woman with PCD caused by a heterozygous frameshift mutation due to a single nucleotide deletion in exon 3 of FOXJ1. Heterozygous de novo mutations in FOXJ1 have been reported as an autosomal-dominant cause of PCD. The patient had situs inversus, congenital heart disease, infertility, and hydrocephalus. However, the nasal nitric oxide level was normal. Long-term macrolide therapy was remarkably effective. This is the first case report of PCD caused by a FOXJ1 variant in Japan.

We created a modified version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) for persons with hearing loss (HL) and tested its reliability, validity and effectiveness among 40 elderly participants. We extracted the MMSE items `registration', `recall', `repetition' and `comprehension' and in the HL condition, these four items were only presented with simultaneous spoken and written instructions. The results were as follows: (1) The HL test-retest coefficient of correlation was r = 0.74; Cronbach's α was 0.64. (2) In the non-hearing loss group, the HL test results showed a correlation with the MMSE, the Oldest-Old version of the Cognitive Assessment Questionnaire and the Clinical Dementia Rating(CDR-J). (3) A 2-way ANOVA was conducted with cognitive function as the within-subjects factor and hearing loss as the between-subjects factor; for total score, `registration' and `repetition', the effect of cognitive function test was significant only in the hearing loss group. The retest reliability of HL, its concurrent validity and its effectiveness were confirmed. It is desirable to administer the standard MMSE to persons with hearing loss if they can use hearing aids or adjustments can be made to the volume. However, if such modifications are not possible, HL may be useful in cases where it is necessary to repeat questions.

A vocabulary is used as one of the indexes of the language development, and it is pmportant meaning to grasping vocabulary development. But, there is a little research that a vocabulary in the 12-23 Month wa investigated. The purpose of this study is to investigate the vocabulary of the child in the 12-23 Month. We analyzed it about the number of average vocabularies, the part of speech atructure, the different in sex. The results is following there were two stages in the vocabulary development as that result. There were many nouns. And it was the result that preceding research was supported with a part of speech. A noun could be thought to occupy an important position in the early vocabulary development. It guessed the matter that it increased after a 24 month. A difference in sex became clearer than 22month. From now on, the vocabulary which becomes the index of the development evaluation, and the number of vocabularies will be examined.

Objective The predictors of in-hospital outcomes after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) complicated with heart failure or cardiogenic shock at presentation remain unclear. Methods Using the AMI-Kyoto Multi-Center Risk Study database, the clinical background characteristics, angiographic findings, primary PCI results, and in-hospital prognoses were retrospectively compared between primary PCI-treated AMI patients with a Killip class status of ≥2 (Killip 2-4 patients, n=390) and those with a Killip class 1 status (Killip 1 patients, n=1,057). Results The Killip 2-4 patients were more likely to have a higher age and proportion of women and exhibited a higher prevalence of previous myocardial infarction, diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease or anemia on admission, lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) values on admission, a higher rate of multivessels or left main trunk as the culprit artery, a larger number of diseased vessels, a lower Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) grade in the infarct-related artery (IRA) before/after primary PCI and a significantly higher in-hospital mortality rate than the Killip 1 patients. According to a multivariate analysis, age was found to be an independent positive predictor of in-hospital mortality, while admission SBP was an independent positive predictor of in-hospital survival in both groups. In contrast, anemia on admission was found to be an independent predictor of in-hospital death, while the TIMI 3 flow in the IRA after PCI was found to be an independent factor for survival in the Killip 2-4 patients, but not the Killip 1 patients. Conclusion Anemia on admission and the final TIMI 3 flow in the IRA are critical determinants of in-hospital death in AMI patients with a Killip class status of ≥2 undergoing primary PCI.
