The gobies Eutaeniichthys gilli and Gymnogobius scrobiculatus were collected from burrows of the mud shrimp Upogebia yokoyai at low tide by digging and using a yabby pump from April 2007 to September 2008 at Susaki Bay, Kochi Prefecture, Japan. A total of 144 E. gilli and 103 G. scrobiculatus were collected. Densities of E. gilli and G. scrobiculatus collected by digging were 1.4 and 1.0 ind. per 0.25 m2, respectively. Symbiotic prevalences of E. gilli and G. scrobiculatus in mud shrimp burrows (the percentage of burrows occupied by E. gilli and G. scrobiculatus) collected using the yabby pump were 2.7% and 2.6%, respectively. Juveniles of E. gilli were collected in June; juveniles of G. scrobiculatus were collected in April. Adults of both species were collected year round. The present study clearly shows that E. gilli and G. scrobiculatus both use Upogebia burrows at low tide. In order to conserve these threatened and near-threatened gobies, conservation of this habitat as well as the mud shrimp might be needed.

To investigate the invasion history and recent geographic distribution of marine organisms introduced to Japan or transferred domestically to non-native regions, a questionnaire survey on their occurrence in the field, including both published and unpublished records, was conducted in 2002-2003. A total of 105 taxa was reported by 94 respondents. According to three criteria, viz. known or unknown geographic origin, established invasion history, and presumed dispersal mechanisms associated with human activities, 42 taxa were designated as non-indigenous species introduced to Japan through human activities, 26 taxa as indigenous species that are distributed both in Japan and other countries but are introduced from abroad to Japan for fisheries or as fish bait, 20 taxa as cryptogenic species which are not demonstrably native or introduced, two taxa as non-indigenous species that have extended their range to Japan through natural dispersion, and one taxon as an indigenous species. The remaining 14 taxa were considered to have been transferred domestically to new areas. Analysis of the years of first record of 42 non-indigenous species suggests that the rate of invasion has increased over the past century, with seven or eight species being introduced per decade after 1960. Data on temporal change in geographic distribution revealed that many non-indigenous species have become widespread recently, from the Pacific coasts of central Japan to the coasts of the Sea of Japan or northward. However, the species listed in the present study are not exhaustive, and more extensive investigations covering all taxa and all presumed dispersal mechanisms are urgently needed before consideration of legislative management of introduced marine organisms.

Two introduced crab species, Pyromaia tuberculata and Carcinus aestuarii, occur abundantly in organically polluted waters in Japan. Population studies of these crabs have been conducted in Tokyo Bay, in which summer hypoxia causes destruction of the benthic animal populations on the bottom of the innerhalf of the bay. In fall, a population of P. tuberculata quickly recolonizes that bottom, which has recovered from the hypoxia, by settlement of larvae. Settled crabs reach maturity by the next spring, then release larvae until the subsequent summer hypoxia. Released larvae disperse to the outerhalf of the bay, resulting in recruitment of juveniles into the local population. These recruits reach maturity before the fall under the normoxic conditions prevailing there, then release larvae for recolonization of the innerhalf of the bay. Carcinus aestuarii grows along the shores of river-mouths and in a lagoon of the inner bay, but migrates out onto the bay bottom during fall to spring, when it releases larvae. Released larvae settle along the shores during the spring. Settled crabs grow on the shores with adult crabs that had returned from the bay bottom. Thus the crabs on the shores avoid encountering the bottom hypoxia. These results suggest that the main factor that has allowed the establishment of the new introduced populations in Tokyo Bay is complementarity between the life cycle of these crabs, including adult migration or larval dispersal, and the seasonal availability of a habitat that is recovering from hypoxia.

Specimens of the freshwater crab Geothelphusa dehaani (WHITE) were collected at 60 points of Kagoshima Prefecture to study the color variations appeared on the carapace, cheliped, and am-bulatory legs from May to September of 1989. The color variations were fundamentally distin-guished into three types : Blue Type, Red Type, and Brown Type. The color of young crabs were Brown Type and changed into Blue Type or Red Type when the crabs reached more than 14mm in carapace width. Red Type crabs were distributed to the north of Kamino River, Satsuma Peninsula and Kimotsuki River, Oosumi Peninsula, while Blue Type crabs were distributed to the south of these rivers. The predominant carotenoids were lutein, astaxanthin, astaxanthin diester, and astaxanthin monoester in the Red Type crabs, while in the Blue Type crabs they were β-carotene and lutein.

九州天草西岸において,潮間帯に棲息するカメノテ,Capitulum mitellaの集団内の個体を1年間にわたり追跡し,サイズと生存の有無を記録した. サイズの指標として峰板の先端と嘴板の先端の距離を測定した.成長曲線については,ロジスチック,ベルタランフィ,ゴンパーツ,指数の4つの曲線を使って適合度を検討したが,指数式が最も合いがよかった.指数式を使って検討を行ったが,成長は集団の内側の個体と外側の個体とで統計的な有意差はみられなかった.内外個体を込みにした指数式のパラメータの値a=1.2902,b=0.008843,t0=80.73であった.1年間の生存率をみると,内側と外側の個体で有意差はみられなかった.内外個体込みの生存率は0.804であった.

Two discrete morphological types were recognized among the populations of a boring bivalve, Penitella kamakurensis, based mainly on whether the anterior end of the shell (beak) is pointed (P-type) or rounded (R-type). The relative abundance of the two types varies from place to place according to the hardness of the rock in each locality. P-type individuals are abundant in softer rocks and R-type in harder rocks. In R-type individuals, the width of growth band is narrower, the size of posterior adductor muscle scar is larger, and the shell is thicker than in P-type individuals from the same locality. Individuals of either shell type living in harder rocks show the same tendencies in comparison with those of the same shell type from softer rocks.

A unique foraging behavior of the carnivorous polychaete Halla okudai (Lysaretidae) is described in detail. Living bivalves, Ruditapes philippinarum were supplied to adult H. okudai, which were burrowing in sandy sediment in aquariums. The foraging behavior was divided into 4 stages ; responding, searching, handling, and feeding. Responding and searching were considered to be dependent on the olfactory sense, and searching was significantly responsible for the variation in total foraging time. Handling was performed by inhibiting the escape of the bivalve and then opening its shell while secreting a jelly-like material. Bivalve size (23.8-26.3mm shell length) showed a significant correlation to handling time, which ranged from 0.87 to 6.67hr. During feeding, the ploychaete continued to secrete the jelly-like material, which was different in hue from that secreted during handling.

The spatial distribution around hydrothermal vents, population structure, and relative growth parameters of the galatheid crab Shinkaia crosnieri were examined. Surveys were done by the Shinkai 2000 on the Hatoma and Dai-yon Yonaguni Knolls in the southern Okinawa Trough. On the Hatoma Knoll, S. crosnieri inhabited areas (temp. 4.0-6.2°C) about 0.2-2 m away from the active vent (temp. 301°C). In the outer area of the habitat of S. crosnieri (temp. 3.0-3.7°C), dense beds of Bathymodiolus mussels occurred and aggregations of Alvinocaris shrimp were observed. In this survey, 248 specimens of S. crosnieri were collected. Small, probably just post-metamorphic juveniles and large, mature adults co-occurred. Chelipeds of males were proportionally larger than those of females, while abdomens of females were proportionally larger than those of males. Larger chelipeds in males are thought to have evolved through male-male competition for females, and wider abdomens in females are thought to be related to the attachment of fertilized eggs to the abdominal appendages.

Abstract: Sexual and asexual reproduction of the fissiparous asteroid Coscinasterias acutispina(Stimpson)was studied in two populations(Kurosaki and Uozu)in Toyama Bay, Sea of Japan, during April 1998-March 1999(Kurosaki)and April 1998-October 1999(Uozu). A total of 96% and 87% of all starfish collected at Kurosaki and Uozu, respectively, showed signs of asexual reproduction by fission. Monthly changes in the ratio of regenerated arm length to maximum arm length revealed that starfish in these populations split most frequently in summer. There was a marked difference in the development of gonads between the two populations. In the Kurosaki population, monthly changes of gonad indices and histological observations on gonads indicated a distinct annual cycle, with a winter spawning season in both males and females. In the Uozu population, gonad indices remained low, and no starfish with mature gonads were observed during the study. An unbalanced sex ratio was observed in both populations; the Uozu population was composed entirely of males. The absence of mature gonads and the extremely biased sex ratio suggest that larval recruitment was low or absent in the Uozu population.

Genetic differentiation among five populations of the Japanese freshwater crab Geothelphusa dehaani, each comprising one of three different body color types, dark brown (RE), dark purplish brown (DA), and grayish blue (BL), was examined by means of electrophoretic analysis of 16 enzyme loci. Allelic replacement was observed between the BL-type population and populations of the other two types (RE and DA) at three loci (α Gpd, Gpi, and Sod-1), but not between the RE-and DA-type populations. The average of Nei's genetic distance (D) was 0.035 between the RE and DA populations (range of 0.013-0.061), 0.251 between the RE and BL populations (0.244-0.260), and 0.296 between the DA and BL populations. These results suggest that the BL type is only distantly related to the other two color types (RE and DA).

Member of the genus <i>Neomysis</i> inhabit estuaries or lagoons in temperate to subarctic areas and are important in the food webs of those areas, but there have been few studied of this genus in the Northwest Pacific. We examined geographical variations in the species composition of mysids including <i>Neomysis</i> in eastern Hokkaido, Japan. The species composition of mysids was classified into three groups. The first group consists of mainly <i>Neomysis mirabilis</i>, the second group consists of only <i>N. awatschensis</i>, and the third group consists of several species. These types are closely related to geographical features and salinity. This study reveals that the species compositions of mysids vary considerably between locations even though these locations at similar latitude.

Specimens of the nudibranch Gymnodoris nigricolor were found on the fins of three gobiid fish species, Amblyeleotris ogasawarensis, Ctenogobiops pomastictus, and C, feroculus, near Oujima and Sesoko Islands, Okinawa, in February and May, 1994. These gobiids inhabit the burrows of snapping shrimps. The nudibranchs could be found attached to any fin (caudal, dorsal, pectoral, anal, and pelvic fins) of these fish, and they appeared to feed on a portion of the fin membrane together with one or two of the adjacent fin rays. In the laboratory, G. nigricolor also attached to a free-living gobiid fish, Bathygobius cocosensis. Nudibranchs gathered in glass tubes that had been used as refuges by A. ogasawarensis and C. pomastictus. This suggests that the nudibranchs were attracted to substances that had originated from the fish and remained in the tubes. The nudibranchs did not always attach to the fins of test fish, and individuals that did so detached themselves 1-2 days later. Their association with the fish thus appears to be a predator-prey interaction. Spawning of Gymnodoris nigricolor was observed in a rearing tank. About 200-700 eggs of 0.15 mm in diameter were found in each egg mass. Embryos hatched 10-11 days after oviposition at 24°C.

Egg-spawning and browsing behavour of an archiannelid, Saccocirrus uchidai, were studied at a mediolittoral habitat in Oshoro, Hokkaido, north Japan. During the breeding season, May to July, in 1980 and 1981, it was occasionally observed that a number of worms came out from the interstices among coarse Shelly sands, then they spawned eggs or fed over the sediment. Timing, position and abundance for the occurrence of these behavioral phenomena displayed over the sediment were studied together with their under-sediment movement (aggregation and migration). Besides the above, the motions of egg-spawning worms were closely observed in the laboratory condition.
