This paper deals with urban formation of "chou" especially by "Koya-gake" which meant to build rude buildings to meet an immediate need. In Kyoto the rapid urbanization was prompted by the construction of Juraku-dai from 1586 onward. "Koya-gake" formed "Koya-no-chou" close to Juraku-dai. The form could be seen through Daichuh'in archives which recorded the width, but not the depth, of each premise in "Koya-no-chou" of 1587. This showed that "Koya-no-chou" was urbanized only in the land facing on streets. The paper concludes that the construction boom changed only the surface of blocks at the first urban dynamics.

This paper traces some links of the development process of the mountain huts through the example of the location planning of the mountain huts by the owners of the Nakabusa spa in the prewar period by analysing the Momose family's archives. The owners of the Nakabusa spa had construction plans for 15 mountain huts in the prewar period. This was done by using the local knowledge about the place which the mountain residents (i.e. huntsmen, etc.) had for the base of a mountaineering course around mountaineering stations.

This paper traces some links between typology and location of NOH-stages (NOHBUTAI) in Wakasa. Typology depends upon four ; (1)plan, (2) space division of the main stage (HON-BUTAI) and the back stage (ATOZA), (3) orientation of NOH-stage and the shrine (SYADEN), (4) site plan of NOH-stage and the shrine. NOH-stages located near Obama, the historical center of Wakasa, had some similarities to that of urban NOH-stages. The similarities between the tow decreased in proportion to the distance from the center. It means that NOH-stages in Wakasa were not independent from urban ones but were deprived from urban ones.

This paper traces the factors from which establishment time differed at each elementary school by verifying the time background of the old in-the-city and old rural district in Kyoto at the initial stage of Meiji era. The time when feudal land ownership was dissolved was remarkably different from within Rakuchu and without Rakuchu. The gap between Rakuchu and Rakuchu mainly caused the gap that the Bangumi-elementary-school had the high rate of new building while the Guntyu-elementary- school had the high rate of temple diversion.

This paper deals with the historical premise of the morphogenesis of "Machinami", which means uniform townscape with a row of town houses, especially in Kyoto of the Edo period. "Machinami" was proved to be originally based on equal burden of taxation imposed upon town houses' dwellers. The new taxation called "Nokiyaku" was applied in the central Kyoto in 1591 instead of imposing "Jishi". According to "Noklyaku", a town house was a. minimal unit of the taxation, which was represented by architectural elemerits such as a ridge, a gate and a pair of "Udatsu" that belonged to each town house.

This paper traces one of the wooden tiled roofs called Toribuki. Toribuki fixes wooden tiles to a roof by means not by pegs or strings but by stones, bamboos or logs. Each wooden tile is not planed and uniform, and is easily replaced for a very short time and finally used as fuel. Today the remains of Toribuki almost disappeared except some properties. Yet, the term dates from late medieval and the examples date from the late ancient. Toribuki could be seen both in the lower-class buildings and in the attached small buildings particularly completed by no craftsmen.

This paper traces some links between frame and roof truss via the town-houses in Kyoto of Edo-Meiji period. Frame has pillars and.beams. Roof truss has purlins, ridgepole and rafters. The town-houses has two walls, Doma-side wall and Yukaue-side wall, and has the line between the two. On Doma-side and Yukaue-side wall, pillars line up half of a Ken interval and bear up purlins and ridgepole. On the line between the two big pillar 'Daikoku' bears up purlin or ridgepole. In this manner every pillar bears up purlins or ridgepole. Thus frame and roof truss doesn't separate in the town-houses.

This paper traces some links of the development process of mountain huts through the example of the mountain huts scattered along Weston's trail on Mt. Yari in the Japan Alps. By the analysis of the mountain huts and the land on which they were built, the development process of the mountain huts was classified into four types. And the mountain huts were built by using the sites and the huts of the occupants (i.e. woodsmen and huntsmen, etc.) and by taking advantage of their knowledge and expertise of both the sites and huts.

This paper traces the transition of the thatched vernacular house in Shinshu area from the medieval to the post-medieval. It targets the post between the ridge and the beam in Sasu-gumi which is one of the roof truss structures. The post tends to be seen in the upper class's house during the initial stage of the post-medieval era. The post probably comes from the post called Munamochi-bashira which can independently stand from the earth directly to the ridge in the medieval vernacular house. The paper concludes that the post forms important links which are missed between them.

This paper examines the hard flat stones called Teppeiseki as the roofing material in Suwa district. The stones began to be used on roof in the Edo era to press roofing boards. The roof with boards and the stones varied during the Meiji era and finally changed into the roof with the stones and no boards. Above all the roofing made only of the diamond-shaped Teppeiseki stones prevailed for its good rainproof. The Teppeiseki stones started to cover the roofs of storehouses for cocoon in the 1890's and then spread to houses in the first quarter of the twenty century.
