Oral penetrating traumas with a toothbrush are often encountered in clinical oral surgery. Most cases are minor injuries, but some require surgery or hospitalization due to complications. We report an overview of three cases of oral penetrating injuries caused by toothbrushes. The first case was a 4-year-old girl whose toothbrush had penetrated her palatoglossus muscle, leading into her parapharyngeal space. The second case was a 2-year-old boy who was transported by ambulance with a toothbrush stuck in the buccal mucosa. In the third case, the buccal fat pad of a 1-year 6-months-old boy was incarcerated after penetration of the buccal mucosa with a toothbrush. After admission, he needed a reduction of the buccal fat pad under general anesthesia. The clinical symptoms of an oropharyngeal penetrating injury vary depending on the condition of the toothbrush that caused the injury, the site of the injury, and the degree of injury. Even if the wound is small, it can cause severe damage to deep tissues. Therefore, it is necessary to make an accurate initial diagnosis, predict the subsequent risks, and decide on appropriate treatment. Additionally, literature reviews have shown several characteristics of these injuries and the risk of serious complications.

We reported a case of complex odontoma in a 3-year-old 1-month female infant.She was consulted with a complaint of an unerupted mandibular left first deciduous molar. Based on X-ray examination, we found that the tooth was impacted, and a calcificated mass was observed surrounding the tooth. We enucleated the mass with the tooth surgically. Histopathologically, it was diagnosed as complex odontoma.This is a rare case of complex odontoma, which interferred with the eruption of the mandibular first deciduous molar.

Dimethanesulphonylthioalkanes and analogous compounds were synthesized by the reaction of corresponding sodium thiosulphonate and appropriate dibromide to test the carcinostatic activity compaed with Myleran. It was found that some of these compounds inhibited pronouncedly the growth of the solid tumor produced by Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells.

This work was concerned with the characterization of nonkeratinous and keratinous proteins of human hair eluted by permanent wave lotion I (PWL-I). Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, infrared spectroscopy and amino acid analysis method were applied.From these examinations, the following results were obtained. (1) Nothing was eluted from human hair by hot water (60°C, 3hr treatment), whereas some extracts were obtained using alkaline solution, surfactant solution, or PWL-I (permanent wave lotion I). (2) The mass of the proteins extracted by PWL-1 accounted for about 1% of the total mass of the hair and tended to increase with an increase in pH. (3) It was confirmed that the molecular weights ranged from 5, 000 to 65, 000 by SDS PAGE. (4) The amino acid composition of the PWL-1 extracts was similar to that of colagenous proteins which was unexpected. The composition was diffrent from that of intercuticular material, δ, eluted by formic acid. Therefore, we suspected that the PWL-1 extract was eluted from the δ layer among the cortical cells.In addition, it was clarified that a part of keratinous protein was extracted from hair which was damaged by repeated treatments of PWL or breached by hydrogen peroxide and ammonia water. It is thought to be eluted from the matrix in the cortical cell which is composed of amorphous keratin of high sulfer content.These results will help clarify the mechanism of the elution of intercellar material of humann hair and the mechanism of hair damage by external treatments.

The authors have reported 4 successfully-detected cases of helium in postmortem blood by headspace-gas chromatography (HS-GC). Postmortem blood was collected into a depressurized 4-ml glass vial to prevent volatilization loss of helium. MICROPACKED-ST column (2.0 m×1.0 mm i.d., 80/100 mesh) was used as a separation column, and thermal conductivity detector was selected as a gas chromatographic detector. Argon was used as a carrier gas, and the flow rate was set at 8.3 ml/min. After 0.5 ml air was released into the vial, 0.5 ml headspace gas was manually injected to the instrument. In this analytical condition, helium was well-separated from other gases in the atmosphere. This HS-GC method was applied to real blood samples of 4 suspected cases of helium inhalation, resulting in successful detection of helium in blood in all cases.   In the case of a suicide by helium inhalation, it is generally difficult to determine the cause of death from an autopsy finding. This case report provides a practical method to obtain direct proof of helium inhalation.
