A woodpecker strikes its beak toward a tree repeatedly. But, the damage of brain or the brain concussion doesn't occur by this action. Human cannot strike strongly the head without the damage of a brain. Therefore, It is predicted that the brain of a woodpecker is protected from the shock by some methods and that the woodpecker has the original mechanism to absorb a shock. In this study, the endoskeltal structure, especially head part structure of woodpecker is dissected and the impact-proof system is analyzed by FEM and model experiment. From the results, it is obvious that the woodpecker has the original impact-proof system as the unique states of hyoid bone, skull, tissue and brain. Moreover it is considered that woodpecker has the advanced impact-proof system relating with not only the head part but also with the whole body.

本報は竹材を自然界における一つの設計物体と考え, その幾何学的および材料組織的構造が外力条件といかなる関係にあるかを明らかにした. そしてその結果から竹材の構造が外力条件の変化に対応した柔なものであること, また各部の形状や組織がきわめて多くの機能を有し, したがって強度的な面からみても一つの目的に対し種々の最適化がなされた高度な構造組織を有しそれが工学設計システムにも応用されるべきことを明らかにした.

It is hard to use the drill by bare-handed. We want to develop machine that the vibration or impact was suppressed. A woodpecker is enumerated as for repeatedly an impact. A woodpecker strikes its beak toward a tree repeatedly. But, the damage of the brain or the living body doesn't occur by this action. Therefore, it is predicted that the brain and body of woodpecker is protected from the shock by some methods. And it turns out that the woodpecker has the original mechanism that endures impact. In this study, from the structure of woodpecker (especially hyoid bone) makes a model. And the model is analyzed. It thinks about the endures impact from the result.

In the United States and Japan, baseball is a very popular sport played by many people. However, the ball used is hard and moves fast. A professional baseball pitcher in good form can throw a ball at up to 41.7 m/s (150km/hr). If a ball at this speed hits the batter, serious injury is quite likely. In this paper we will describe our investigations on the impact of a baseball with living tissues by finite element analysis. Baseballs were projected at a load cell plate using a specialized pitching machine. The dynamic properties of the baseball were determined by comparing the wall-ball collision experimentally measuring the time history of the force and the displacement using dynamic finite element analysis software (ANSYS/LS-DYNA). The finite element model representing a human humerus and its surrounding tissue was simulated for balls pitched at variable speeds and pitch types (knuckle and fast ball). In so doing, the stress distribution and stress wave in the bone and soft tissue were obtained. From the results, the peak stress of the bone nearly yielded to the stress caused by a high fast ball. If the collision position or direction is moved from the center of the upper arm, it is assumed that the stress exuded on the humerus will be reduced. Some methods to reduce the severity of injury which can be applied in actual baseball games are also discussed.

本研究は,自然・生態系と調和した新しい材料,構造,機器,システム等の創生法を,生物に学ぶことによって確立することを目的としている.その方法は多様な生物の中で,特異性を有する生物にまず注目する.本研究では動物の例として繰返し衝撃負荷に耐える「キツツキ」を,植物の例としては,軽量であるが不燃性を示す「桐材」に注目した.そしてこれらの特性がどのようなメカニズムによって生じているのかを,主として力学的視点より明らかにした.これらの結果と,代表者らがすでに行って来ている竹や卵殻の構造・組織分析結果を含め,新しい構造設計および材料設計法の基本原理を提示した.

It is difficult that assemble a minute machine using still minute parts. If assemble it, space and friction between the parts cannot disregard in the micro world. However, such a problem is solvable if the objective function is realized by one continuum. The continuum having such a specific function is called "Functional Continuum (FC)". In this study, the FC for the key switch of the keyboard of a notebook PC is proposed, that is the one structure key switch using the stainless thin plate. On the other hand, the existing notebook PC has the rubber dome and the pantograph as a key structure part, and the number of parts is very much. In this paper, the two kinds of test pieces are actually manufactured, and the characteristic evaluation is performed experimentally.

従来使用されているアーム式または, 2ローラ式のピッチングマシンでは投球の速度とコースを同時かつ即座に変更することはきわめて困難である. そこで本研究では, 3個のローラを用いそのローラの回転数を各々独立に制御することにより, 従来得ることのできなかった様々なコース, 速度を極めて正確に投げ分けることのできるピッチングマシンを試作した. なお, その制御法にはニューラルネットワークを用い, 的の各コースおよび速度を入力データ, 各ローラの回転数を出力データとして学習を行い, 使用者(バッター)が希望する投球をピッチングマシン自身が適応して投げ分けてくる. このような機械は知的機械と呼ばれており, ここでは, そのようなピッチングマシンのシステムとその性能について記述する.

Lsystem (LS) is a technique expressing a formation algorithm creating the various shape patterns by the simple rules. Using LS, the complex branch phenomena of plants could be described by simple rules. This paper has tried the methodology to apply LS to the structural design. This methodology grows up the structure as if plants grow up, and produces the optimum structure that is appropiate for the design purpose. It is difficult to acquire LS rules for the optimum structure because the rules have many degrees of freedom. Therefore, this paper proposes an idea that evolves LS rules using Genetic Algorithms (GA) . The methodology is called as an evolutionary LS (ELS) . Using the methodology, the design problems to decide optimum distribution of material and plate thickness are solved.
