Suppressing stereotypic thoughts leads to paradoxical effects (i.e. suppressing a stereotype facilitates the use of the stereotype itself). Recent research on paradoxical effects in stereotype suppression has demonstrated that replacement thoughts decrease its paradoxical effects. This study examined the effectiveness of female counterstereotypes, major non-dominant female stereotypes, and minor non-dominant female stereotypes as replacement thoughts in suppressing dominant female stereotypes. In a lexical decision task, the participants were primed with either female counter-stereotypes, major non-dominant female stereotypes, minor non-dominant female stereotypes, or non-human objects, and thus they were likely to use those that were activated as replacement thoughts. Next, they were given a sentence-stem completion task that served as a manipulation of female stereotype suppression. Finally, they were given another lexical decision task and the response latencies of the stereotypic vs. non-stereotypic words were recorded. The results indicated that regardless of major or minor nondominant female stereotypes as replacement thoughts decreased the paradoxical effects of suppressing dominant female stereotypes. We discussed the way of activation of replacement thoughts and the role of non-dominant stereotypes as replacement thoughts in suppressing dominant stereotypes.

Stereotype suppression leads to paradoxical effects (i.e., stereotype suppression facilitates the use of that stereotype). However, studies on paradoxical effects in stereotype suppression have not sufficiently addressed the relationship between paradoxical effects and individual differences in cognitive tendencies. The present study examined the relationship between cognitive complexity in person perception and the paradoxical effects of stereotype suppression. First, the participants answered a Rep test (role construct repertory test) that served as a measure of cognitive complexity. Second, they were given a sentence-stem completion task that served as a manipulation of stereotype suppression. Third, they were given a lexical decision task and the response latencies of the stereotypic vs. non-stereotypic words were recorded. The results indicated that the participants who were low in cognitive complexity showed paradoxical effects, while those who were high in cognitive complexity did not show paradoxical effects. A relationship between cognitive complexity and paradoxical effects was indicated.

During the spread of COVID-19, prejudice and discrimination against infected persons, their family members, close contacts, and health care workers have become a problem. In this study, we investigated stereotypical perceptions of persons infected with COVID-19 and examined their association with individual differences in behavioral immune system activation. The results showed that the stereotypical perceptions of persons infected with COVID-19 were low sociality and high activity. Next, we examined the effect of infection vulnerability awareness on stereotypical perceptions. The results showed that the stronger the germ aversion, the stronger the perceived lack of infection prevention behaviors, the lower the perceived sociality of the persons infected with COVID-19, and the higher their own perceived infection prevention behaviors. The content of the stereotypes of the persons infected with COVID-19 and the factors influencing these stereotypes were discussed.
