As the machine tools are shifting to high precision cutting, it is necessary to develop an effective instrumentation system and to establish an evaluation method for the spindle run-out error. In this paper, a new measurement system for the run-out error was developed by utilizing an transmitted light beam method. Also a new evaluation method was established by separating the run-out error into rotational error and tool chucking error. The measuring principle is based upon edge detection technique in which a halved photo detector is used to quantify the amount of the transmitted light through the both sides of the pin-gauge used as a master specimen. By providing two similar optical setups which are placed perpendicular to the rotating axis of the pin-gauge, an X-Y displacement measurement system of the pin-gauge was built up. The run-out error of the spindle can be known directly by evaluating the displacement of the pin-gauge through its Lissajous figure. Finally, it was clarified that the performance of the developed evaluation system is practically acceptable.

In this study, we develop a farm management model that incorporates the livelihood structures of African smallholders and their farming conditions. The model is based upon a comprehensive linear programming approach using smallholders’ farm and non-farm data collected in different agroecological zones of the Nacala Corridor, Northern Mozambique. With the model, we examine optimal crop combinations in each zone that maximize the total income among smallholders depending on their available resources and farm risks. The results suggest that upland crop diversification is effective in increasing the income in zones with relatively high production and market risks. The result also attaches importance to increasing the production of the most lucrative beans and tubers cultivated in each zone for livelihood improvement, as well as increasing the major food staples produced in order to achieve food self-sufficiency, especially among those with more than 1 hectare of farmland. Those with less than 1 hectare of farmland would also derive improved livelihood from expanding the cultivatable area, which is feasible considering actual land and labor availability. Given the current level of productivity, however, the next generation would face food shortages and farm economic decline as farmland area is reduced as a consequence of land division after inheritance. Further efforts should thus be geared toward evaluating productivity-enhancing cropping systems and technologies that reflect the relevant data into such a model as established in this study.

Many insulating ceramic materials, such as Si3N4, ZrO2, and Al2O3, and the single-crystal materials ruby, sapphire, and diamond, could be machined by EDM and WEDM with the assisting electrode method. WEDM with the assisting electrode method has successfully machined various insulating ceramics materials, such as Si3N4 and ZrO2, up to a thickness of 100mm, but it has not been successful for SiC with a high melting point and a high thermal conductivity. In this study, the effects of the wire electrode material on machining properties were examined to obtain better machining properties such as a high removal rate and a low machined surface roughness. As a result, the machining characteristics were improved compared with those observed in previous trials. The discharge behavior was discussed by considering discharge waveforms and EDMed surface conditions.

産業界で広く用いられている静電容量型変位センサを用いた2点法による回転誤差測定と、本研究で開発した光学式仮想Vブロック方式を用いた3点法による回転誤差測定を比較検討した。その結果、提案した仮想Vブロック方式は被測定マスターバーの形状精度の影響をほとんど受けないことを明らかにした。また、被測定マスターバーの2断面を測定することにより、マスターバーの偏心と傾きを回転誤差から分離できることを示した。
