This study examined the psychological mechanism of delight by using the Customer Delight and Satisfaction Model (Oliver et al., 1997). Further, it explored the effect of delight and satisfaction on the repurchase behavior and positive word-of-mouth intentions of spectators at sporting events. The following results were obtained: (1) The effect of delight and satisfaction was dependent on the result of the game. (2) Positive/surprise emotions and disconfirmation were important antecedent factors for arousing delight. (3) Analyzing the transaction-specific and cumulative measures, sports teams must establish mutually complementary relationships between arousing delight, especially in the short term, and continuing cumulative satisfaction in the long term. (4) Increasing the spectators' involvement in and knowledge of their favorite sports team could stimulate the effect of delight on attendance and word-of-mouth intentions. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Japanese special expression “Kandoh” refers to a positive emotional state which is deeply impressed by certain things that move the heart. Kandoh is often well-used, specifically for explaining the impressive experience of watching sports. Harada (2008) pointed out the importance of Kandoh experiences in terms of the management of sports teams. Despite the increased importance, no empirical research on this topic has been conducted in the field of sport management. The purposes of this study are to (1) develop a scale for measuring specific of scenes that capture sports spectators' emotional Kandoh experiences, (2) investigate gender differences with respect to Kandoh scenes, and examine what impact Kandoh scenes have on spectators' intentions to attend future games. The results indicate that the construct of Kandoh experience consists of, an eight dimensions, gender differences exist, and some Kandoh scenes have significant effects on customer satisfaction and attendance intentions.

Japan will host the 2019 Rugby World Cup, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, and the 2021 Kansai World Masters Games. To ensure the success of these events, understanding each event’s impact is extremely important for governments and organizing bodies. However, the structure and influencing factors of event impact are poorly understood in Japan, despite research on event impacts conducted previously in western countries. Additionally, no previous studies in Japan have ever attempted to review and evaluate the literature on event impact. The present study reviewed the literature on the impact of sporting events. Event impact in a sports context can be divided into 3 categories based on the Triple Bottom Line approach (Fredline et al., 2005), namely (1) the economic impact, (2) the social impact, and (3) the environmental impact. For our systematic review, data were selected through electronic searches of several computer databases (SPORT Discus with Full Text, Science Direct, CiNii, and Google Scholar). Based on the studies by Deery and Jago (2010) and Deery et al. (2012), this review focused on 3 aspects: 1) the construct of impacts, 2) the theoretical approach, 3) methodology and 4) the relationship with other constructs. The main conclusions were as follows. First, with regard to economic impact, positive impacts included effects on employment, infrastructure that helped in development and improvement, and increased investment. However, negative impacts were also confirmed, including price increases, construction costs, crowds, and social issues. Second, with regard to social impact, positive impacts mainly included cultural development, awareness and image improvement, new opportunities, increased interest in different cultures, and so on. Negative impacts included increased traffic jams, rising crime rates, and an increase in prostitution. Third, with regard to environmental impact, positive impacts included motivation for conserving the environment and historical buildings, promotion of environmental education, conservation of resources and ecosystems, and environmental improvement for sustainable development. Negative impacts included the destruction of the environment. This research has highlighted practical implications and areas for future study for the development of event impact in Japan.

This study aims to check the validity and reliability of a social impact scale of mega sporting events in the context of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The scale was developed in three steps. First, a literature review and a preliminary survey of residents of Tokyo and neighboring cities were conducted to summarize the social impact items relating to sporting events. Second, the content and translation validity of the measurements were evaluated by several experts who specialize in sport management. Finally, a main survey was conducted to check the validity and reliability of the scale (10 factors and 32 items), which was confirmed with partial insufficiency to its criteria. The current study extends previous research by developing a social impact scale for sporting events, a topic barely explored in Japan.

This study (1) verified the effect of positive affect in the event on the fit (between host city image and sporting event), host city image, and spectators' behavioral intention (2) verified the effect of fit and host city image on behavioral intention, and (3) confirmed the validity and reliability of the host city image scale and predicted behavioral intention based on each city's image. Questionnaires from 267 people living outside the host area were collected at the 2015 Tour de France Saitama Criterium. The results from structural equation modeling indicated that positive affect in the event was an antecedent variable to fit and behavioral intention, fit influenced host city image and behavioral intention, and city image also influenced behavioral intention. A city image scale comprised of 6 factors and 21 items, with reliability and validity, and city image of “Sport” and “Sightseeing/Leisure” predicted behavioral intention through a multiple regression analysis.
