We tested the cross-cultural applicability of Greenberg's (1980) “Indebtedness model” in Japan and United States. We hypothesized that while the major antecedent of indebtedness is the recipient's benefit for American students, those of Japanese students is the donor's cost perceived by the recipient. University students from U.S.A. (n=151, male=47, female=104) and Japan (n=88, male=25, female=63) reported their recent experience of being aided by their families, friends, and strangers. They also rated on 75 items of questions concerning the intensities of indebtedness and other emotions they felt on receipt of aid, impression of the donor, and the amount of benefit and perceived donor's cost. Supporting our hypothesis, recipient's benefit was the major antecedent of indebtedness for American students and perceived donor's cost was the major antecedent for Japanese students. We also found positive correlation between the intensities of positive and negative emotions evoked by receiving aid, and a small amount of negative impression of the donor from one's own family only in the Japanese sample.

本研究の目的は、スタートアップの成長要因を、経営資源、経営戦略の分類別に探ることである。調査は、地域性、業種の特性をコントロールするために、東京で展開するWEBとモバイル関連ビジネスに焦点を当てている。企業のウエブサイトをみることにより、2年後にどの程度成長しているかを確認した。戦略面では、市場規模、市場成長性、サービス新規性が成長性と関係あることが実証できた。さらに、他社と差別化するためには、製品の革新性と、一貫したビジネスアイデアを追求しながらも柔軟にビジネスモデルを変更することが有効であった。また、経営資源面では、立ち上げ時の創業チームと、シリーズAの資金調達が有効であった。

Three studies tested the reliability and validity of a Japanese version of the scale that measures compassionate goals to support others’ well-being and self-image goals to construct and defend a desired self-image. Consistent with Crocker and Canevello’s (2008) original English scale, the Japanese scale had a correlated two-factor structure and showed high reliability. Study 1 found that when controlling for self-image goals, compassionate goals were associated with lower zero-sum thinking, lower validation-seeking, higher growth-seeking, and higher independent self-construal. Controlling for compassionate goals, self-image goals were associated with higher validation-seeking and higher interdependent self-construal. In Studies 2 and 3, compassionate goals were associated with self-compassion and private self-consciousness to a greater extent than self-image goals, whereas self-image goals were associated with insecure attachment and with public self-consciousness to a greater extent than compassionate goals. A promotion focus and a prevention focus were moderately associated with both goals, suggesting that compassionate and self-image goals are different from these constructs.

The region of Silicon Valley had attracted investment and human resources while the core industry has shifted from the previous field to the next field and an entrepreneurial ecosystem has evolved. Recently, web & mobile business have emerged. Immigrant entrepreneurs have the advantage of being able to hire low paid engineers in homecountries rather than high paid engineers in Silicon Valley. Most of them choose buyout instead of IPO and accmulate entrepreneurial experiences for their next startups. We found three factors which stimulate growth in startups in the preliminary study. The first is plural founders including CTO, the second is avoiding niche markets and the third is global orientation.
