The purpose of this study is to use the travel photo method (TPM) to reveal the kinds of tourist attractions that cause travelers to be attracted to tourist destinations. In the investigation, we obtained the cooperation of 75 travelers. As a result of analyzing 742 supplied photographs, European and American travelers assessed the attractiveness of Nara through the subjects of temple and shrine architecture, modern architecture, statues of Buddha, and Japanese homes, while Asian tourists did so through subjects such as food and shops, lanterns, and torii (gateways to Shinto shrines). Among the Japanese travelers, the group who had visited many times assessed the attractiveness of Nara through the subjects of stone ruins and flora, while the group who had visited fewer times did so through the subjects of fellow travelers, temple and shrine architecture, and deer. Further, the results showed that travelers’ tourism experiences in Nara can be broadly divided into three types. Based on these, we considered the practical significance of assessments of the attractiveness of tourist destinations using TPM.

This study attempted to investigate the differences in tourists’ perceptions of destination images based on their past travel experiences. Tourism research suggests that past travel experiences affect present tourist behavior in terms of travel career and number of visits. In this study, we consider the tourist as a person seeking mastery through travel experiences and use measures of guest experience from 47 prefectures in Japan. Five hundred respondents living in Osaka were asked to complete a questionnaire via the Internet. Respondents had to identify 10 destination images and write about their travel experiences in as many of the 47 prefectures as they had visited. The main results were as follows: (1) respondents were classified into four clusters according to their travel experiences, (2) tourists who had traveled to more prefectures had an image of the destination based on geographical location and destination characteristics, and (3) tourists who had previously visited a particular destination and had been to more prefectures had a clear image of the destination. Based on these results, the process through which tourists develop expertise was discussed.

Photo-Based Communication (PBC) is an educational program that aims to increase self-expression ability and self-esteem through communication activities using photographs. It is composed of two sub-programs: “Discovery” and “Taking Photos to Express Thoughts”. The objective of this research project was to determine the psychological and educational effects of PBC on participating children. To that end, study was conducted. Study was a questionnaire survey of 29 students in the fifth and sixth grades of elementary school. The results of the survey showed that children felt an extremely high degree of satisfaction with participation in PBC, and that participation in PBC caused them to improve the self-esteem through photographic expression, as well as to understand that they and their friends see things in different ways. Some thoughts on the effects of PBC on children and the significance of using PBC in the classroom are offered here based on these results.

本研究の目的は,日本人海外旅行者の観光動機の構造を明らかにし,訪問地域・旅行形態・年令層による観光動機の違いを比較することである。出国前の日本人旅行者1014名(男性371名,女性643名)を対象に観光動機を調査した。主な結果は以下の通りである。(1)観光動機は「刺激性」「文化見聞」「現地交流」「健康回復」「自然体感」「意外性」「自己拡大」の7因子構造であった。(2)観光動機は,年令を重ねるにつれて新奇性への欲求から本物性への欲求へと変化することが明らかになった。(3)アジアやアフリカ地域への旅行者は,今までにない新しい経験や,訪問国の文化に対する理解を求めて旅行をする。一方,欧米地域への旅行者は,自然に触れる機会を求めて旅行をすることが明らかになった。(4)個人手配旅行者は,見知らぬ土地という不確実性の高い状況を経験することや,現地の人々との交流を求めて旅行をする。一方,主催旅行者は,安全性や快適性を保持したままの旅行で,外国の文化や自然に触れることを求めて旅行をすることが明らかになった。これらの結果を踏まえ,観光行動の心理的機能について考察した。

本稿では,魅力ある観光地域づくりのための調査手法として,観光写真調査法が有益であることを述べた.観光写真調査法(TPM)は,従来の魅力調査では,捉えることが困難であった感性や直観を魅力評価に反映させた手法であり,個人が観光地に対して抱く集合的・個別的イメージ(魅力)および,個々の観光資源に付与された価値を把握することができる.TPMの実施手続きを解説するとともに,奈良をフィールドとしたTPMの実践例を紹介した.最後に,着地型のコミュニティ・ツーリズムでの観光振興におけるTPMの応用可能性について議論した.

This study aimed to reveal the differences between children's hazard perception and those of adults, using the photo projective method (PPM) developed by Noda (1988). PPM is a new technique based on a projective method that captures subjects' perceived environments through photographs. Thus, this method helps us understand an individual's internal mental world. To evaluate the patterns of children's hazard perception and safety awareness, we first asked 23 children (4th graders) and 19 mothers to take photographs of hazard points or areas that caused anxiety in the children during their commute to school. The results show that children perceived traffic hazards as being less hazardous than adults did. Second, to assess the development of children's safety awareness, we asked 139 children (1st trough 6th graders) and 106 adults, the children's parents, to take photographs of hazard points or areas that caused anxiety in the children during their commute to school. The results revealed certain patterns of the children's developmental process relative to hazard perception and safety awareness. The differences in the photographs reflect the development of hazard perception ability in the children. It was observed that children above the ages of 9 and 10 have perception patterns similar to those of adults.
