This study examines the backgrounds and motivations of individuals participating in trail running races, focusing on empirical data from surveys of participants in two trail running races held in Shinetsu highland region in 2016 (n=730) , one long distance (110km) and the other middle and short distance (50km / 16km). The survey data showed that, as compared to participants in the short distance race, of the participants in the long distance race, a higher percentage were male, originated from various regions, earned a higher income, had more years of trail running experience and had participated in more competitions. With respect to the motivations for participation, the data showed six primary motivating factors: “Community and Competition management”, “Health”, “Challenge and Accomplishment”, “Ease of Access”, “Course Type” and “Socialising”. Analysis of the motivations of participants across the two different distances showed that a difficult "Course Type" and the feeling of "Challenge and Accomplishment" are the strongest motivations for long distance racers, while the most prominent motivating factors for short distance racers are "Health", "Ease of Access", "Socialising" and a "Course Type" of a suitable distance and level of difficulty.

Previous research indicated that many mountain bikers in Japan, as new recreational users, recently engaged in contribution projects to local communities to overcome conflicts with forest landowners, trail managers, and other users to secure their outdoor fields. To verify this movement, this paper conducted a related questionnaire survey among 1,765 mountain bikers. The result showed that Japanese mountain bikers found the best value in riding freely in unpaved forests and trails with a certain distance and scale, and participation in competitive mountain bike (MTB) races was not recognized as primary interest. Additionally, the majority of mountain bikers strongly recognized the need for contribution projects to local communities to secure and maintain these attractive outdoor fields. However, mountain bikers who engage in the projects tend to belong to local mountain bikers’ organizations that collaborate with local communities. Therefore, these local organizations can be the key to developing MTB as a popular outdoor recreation, and promoting local revitalization through the participation of mountain bikers.

This study identified change of vegetation and management affected by change in use objective from farm forest to forest park. We focused on the "Ushiku Nature Sanctuary" where a farm forest was re-developed for recreational use. Spatial and temporal analysis, interviews with relevant parties and bibliographic investigation revealed that diverse vegetation originated differently in the two forests. In the farm forest, varied landscapes of different vegetation types resulted from mosaic-patterned utilization of forest products, such as periodic logging and floor vegetation collection. In contrast, different vegetation communities formed diverse landscapes in Nature Sanctuary with the aim of creating a variety of nature experiences for visitors. Amongst such experiences, farm forest landscape was included, which we found it took a substantial proportion of management efforts. However, we also found that the Nature Sanctuary management did not include logging, despite its importance for landscape maintenance. These results suggest that inclusion of logging regime is necessary in the management plan in order to revive farm forest vegetation and resulting landscape.

The use of nature and its resources have diversified greatly in recent years. Amongst this diversification, the cooperation of the users in conserving the area is important for sustainable use of the nature. Outdoor recreational activities have been considered as one such sustainable use of nature, as they are related to environmental education and environmental conservation activities. In Japan, only a few studies focus on the relationships between the outdoor-recreation activities and their effects, in terms of 1) degree of environmental conservation awareness and 2) the environmentally friendly actions. The aim of this study is to examine the relationships between outdoor recreational activities and the two effects, by a review of previous studies and a questionnaire survey of canoeists, as an example for recreational outdoor activities. The review of previous studies showed that there was a tendency for the outdoor recreation to improve the environmental conservation awareness, but not the environmentally friendly actions. Furthermore, conservation actions conducted by canoe-organizations were effective. The questionnaire survey showed tendencies for increases in the degree of environmental conservation awareness and the environmentally friendly actions with the increase in the canoeing time. My study clarifies that canoeing has strong relationships with the environmental awareness, but transition to environmental-friendly actions can only be observed to a limited extend.
