Lithium is widely used in industry products such as pottery or glass additives, glass flux for continuous casting of steel, grease, medicine, battery. In particular, since lithium ion batteries, which are secondary batteries, have high energy density and high voltage, recent applications have expanded as batteries for electronic devices such as laptop computers, as automotive batteries for electric vehicles or hybrid vehicles. Therefore, demand for lithium is rapidly increasing. However, in the recovery of lithium from a salt lake, brine containing many impurities such as sulfate and magnesium ions are not effectively utilized because solar evaporation cannot be used. We developed the λ-MnO2 adsorbent in order to selectively recover lithium from such brine. In this study, we investigated the adsorption characteristics such as adsorption capacity, adsorption rate and selectivity of lithium by batch mixing and column test using simulated brine. The adsorbent prepared by hydrometallurgical process had higher adsorption capacity and rate of lithium than the adsorbent prepared by pyrometallurgical process.

MCLE (Matte Chlorine Leach and Electro-winning) process developed by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., LTD. is well known as a unique commercial nickel refining process with high nickel recovery ratio. Two types of nickel sulfide, nickel matte and mixed sulfide (MS: mixture sulfide of nickel and cobalt), are treated in the MCLE process, and the leaching rate difference for each materials become obvious in this process. Bench scale tests had been carried out and leaching rates and activation energies of chlorine leaching reactions were identified. The nickel leaching rate of MS in chlorine leaching reaction is 60% smaller than that of nickel matte.  The nickel leaching rate difference between nickel matte and MS in chlorine leaching reaction is derived from their reaction free energy difference. The determinants of the chlorine leaching reaction rate of nickel matte and MS are respectively a chemical reaction rate and elements diffusion ratio on their surface.

The report introduces the present condition and problem of descriptions about the treatment of disaster hazard areas in basic guideline for urban renaissance and guideline for city planning. The targets are 4 prefectures in Tokai region. As the result of analysis, it has become clear that treatments of disaster hazard areas were different from each municipality because of directionality about the exclusion of guideline for city planning and kinds of disasters. In the future, not excluded areas need to be considered excluding and if impossible, disaster prevention measures need to be set in location normalization plan.

A family history of diabetes and genetic predisposition are established as risk factors for diabetes mellitus, lifestyle factors also play an important role in the etiology of diabetes. Alcohol consumption may be related to risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus (type 2 DM) through effects on insulin secretion and sensitivity. Several large-scale epidemiological studies have suggested an inverse association between moderate alcohol consumption and reduced risk for type 2 DM. We assessed whether or not moderate alcohol consumption is associated with DM.Among 2, 338 men, 150 cases of incident DM were newly identified by means of an oral 75 g glucose tolerance test. The newly diagnosed DM percentages of drinking 0 g/day, 1-9.9 g/day, 10-29.9 g/day, 30-49.9 g/day and ≥50 g/day were 8 .3, 6.3, 5 .1, 5.2, 7.2, respectively. The newly diagnosed DM percentage of drinking 1-9.9 g/day had a significantly lower risk than 0 g/day. The frequency of alcohol consumption was significantly inversely associated with diabetes ; a frequency of greater than 6 times per week showed a significantly lower risk than 0 times per week. HbA1c of drinking 10-29.9 g/day, 30-49.9 g/day, and 5≥0g/day were significantly lower than that of 0 g/day.These data suggest that light moderate and frequent alcohol consumption have a decreased subsequent risk of diabetes mellitus.

Ion-exchange process with chelating resins was investigated for recovery scandium from sulfuric acid aqueous solutions. An iminodiacetic acid type chelating resin, Diaion CR11, had a higher Sc adsorption selectivity than other elements. Diaion CR11 had high trivalent ions adsorption, and almost divalent ions other than nickel were not adsorbed. The adsorbed metal ions were eluted with sulfuric acid, and scandium was separated from aluminum, nickel and chromium. Only iron (III) showed a behavior similar to scandium and was difficult to separate with Diaion CR11. The elution behavior was related to the stability constants of the complex of iminodiacetic acid and metal ions.

Gallium is used as a raw material for a CIGS solar cell. In the manufacturing process of CIGS solar cells, only 30% of the target material is used, and the rest is not used and becomes a spent target scrap. In order to recover gallium from spent target scrap, we investigated the process composed of hydrometallurgical treatment only which does not require pyrometallurgical treatment. We describe the details of the developed process in this report.

Extraction behavior of cobalt from sulfate media containing excess manganese by mixtures LIX63 and several amines was investigated. The addition of amines shifted cobalt extraction isotherm to higher pH region in all case. The degree of the pH isotherm shifts depended on the basicity of each amine in the case of manganese however did not depend on it in the case of cobalt. The separation ability of cobalt from manganese was highest in case of LIX63 and primary amine system.

The present report introduces an overview of the "Umashikuniokoshi-Mie Sakimori Juku" as a practical example of disaster prevention education program, reporting basic framework and overall configuration of the program. The program intended to offer basic sound knowledge as well as practical skills for adults working as e.g. official workers, volunteers, civil servants. Following basic points of the program are summarized and discussed: (1) purpose, (2) institutions of training, (3) subjects for training, (4) target ability, and (5) curriculum. It is considered adequately possible to design disaster education programs for adults in universities.
