Sesoko Station, Okinawa, has been the site of many significant advances in coral reproductive research and it continues to be a preferred destination for both Japanese and international researchers. Consequently, there are decades of spawning observations, which we present and explore here with the aim of making it easier to predict when species spawn at Sesoko Station. The data include over 700 spawning observations from 87 species of reef-building hermatypic corals. Almost all spawning occurred between dusk and dawn, with most spawning activity concentrated in the 2 to 4 hours after sunset. Some phylogenetic patterns were evident: most Acropora species spawn on or around the 6th full moon after December 21st (the northern hemisphere winter solstice); spawning in common species of merulinids and Porites appears to be concentrated around the 7th full moon and spawning in the fungiids around the 8th and subsequent full moons. The night of peak spawning with respect to the night of the full moon varied considerably among years in common Acropora species, but was dependent on the calendar date of the full moon in May or June. Therefore, despite an extended spawning season of over three months and considerable variation in the calendar date of spawning in many species among years, the month and night of spawning are reasonably predictable for many species enhancing the value of Sesoko Station as a site for coral reproductive research.

The increase of the atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO_2) concentration after the industrial revolution caused global climate change. During the last several decades, coral reef ecosystems have been devastated by the mass-scale coral bleaching events caused by abnormally high seawater temperature in summer. In addition, increased atmospheric CO_2dissolves in the ocean, acts as an acid and finally decreases the pH level of seawater. This phenomenon, known as ocean acidification, is now being considered as a future threat to the calcifying organisms in coral reef ecosystems. In this review, we summarize basic backgrounds of ocean acidification as well as its potential impacts on coral reef calcifiers. Together with the distinctive mechanisms of calcification among specific groups, we review the impacts of ocean acidification on major reef-builders such as scleractinian corals, calcareous red algae and reef-dwelling foraminifera. Finally, we point out some recently-recognized problems in acidified seawater experiments as well as the future direction of this research field.

Coral communities at nine sites off the coast of Motobu, Okinawa, were examined 6 and 12 years after a 1998 mass coral bleaching event caused by anomalous seawater temperatures. Overall, mean coral coverage increased from 17% in 2006 to 28% in 2010 at these sites, although these percentages were lower than the coral coverage at a nearby reef at Sesoko Island. Some of the corals that had not recovered (the “losers”) at the Sesoko reef were found at some sites in the present study. Dominant coral taxa differed among sites, probably because of differences in the environmental conditions at the sites, e.g., the so-called massive-type coral Porites dominated at a protected site near a river, while branching-type Acropora was dominant at exposed sites. Acropora was one of the prominent short-term losers, but contributed significantly to coral coverage increases due to its fast growth at some exposed sites. Adjacent reefs, which may share similar environmental conditions, also showed some variability, possibly due to processes such as coral recruitment and post settlement survival, which acted on a smaller spatial scale. Multivariate analyses such as multidimensional scaling were more sensitive than univariate analyses. Overall, recruitment was low, especially at sites with high coral coverage, which implies that remnant corals may have contributed to the recovery of these reefs. Coral communities in this area are recovering and there has been no apparent shift to algae-dominated communities. The recovery of coral communities appears to be related to the life history traits of corals and environmental conditions.
