In the coming smart-home era, more and more household electrical appliances are generating more and more sensor data and transmitting them over the home networks, which are often connected to Internet through Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) for desirable authentication and accounting. However, according to our knowledge, high-speed commercial home PPPoE router is still absent for a home network environment. In this paper, we first introduce and evaluate our programmable platform FLARE-DPDK for ease of programming network functions. Then we introduce our effort to build a compact 10Gbps software FLARE PPPoE router on a commercial mini-PC. In our implementation, the control plane is implemented with Linux PPPoE software for authentication-like signaling control. The data plane is implemented over FLARE-DPDK platform, where we get packets from physical network interfaces directly bypassing Linux kernel and distribute packets to multiple CPU cores for data processing in parallel. We verify our software PPPoE router in both lab and production network environment. The experimental results show that our FLARE software PPPoE router can achieve much higher throughput than a commercial PPPoE router tested in a production environment.

The dynamical response of the southern hemisphere stratosphere to the ocean-surface conditions in 2002 and 2019, when exceptional sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events occurred, was examined through the chemistry–climate model and experiments with 1,000 ensemble members using the sea-surface temperature (SST) and sea-ice conditions. Planetary waves propagating from the troposphere to the stratosphere in experiments using the ocean-surface conditions in 2002 and 2019 were markedly enhanced compared to those in experiments using climatological ocean conditions, owing to the enhancement of the zonal wavenumber-2 component in August 2002 and the wavenumber-1 component from August to November 2019. The distribution function from the ensemble members of the Antarctic polar-vortex intensity shifted to a weaker side in the 2002 and 2019 experiments relative to that of the climatological ocean conditions. The planetary wave propagation to the stratosphere was more enhanced in 2019 than in 2002 from austral winter to spring. This result is consistent with the weakening of the Antarctic polar-vortex intensity in the 2019 experiment relative to the 2002 experiment. These results suggest that the SSWs in 2002 and 2019 are closely related to the ocean surface conditions in these years through wave propagation in the troposphere and stratosphere.

This article explores changes in the traditional use of forests and their relationship with belief in tiger spirits in the Cardamom Mountains in southwest Cambodia. Locals inhabiting the mountains believe that spirits associated with tigers bite those who violate taboos on forest use. However, the tiger population has declined due to the wildlife trade, which experienced rapid growth during the civil war of the 1990s. The article examines the impact of the war and wildlife trade on the traditional use of the forest by analyzing the relationships among traditional beliefs, changes in the tiger population caused by the growth of the wildlife trade, and war-related changes in the social order. Before the war, beliefs associating tigers with forest use could be observed on several societal levels. The belief that tigers punish violators was practiced on village and inter-village levels, while another form of belief was also practiced on family and individual levels. However, the tiger’s disappearance from the region because of the wildlife trade made such beliefs ineffective. A new belief arose that violators were punished by crop damage caused by wild pigs and other animals. Nevertheless, those who practiced the belief at the individual and family levels still believed in the association between the tiger and spirits and their role in forest use. Therefore, the impact of the aforementioned factors on tiger beliefs differed according to societal level; the extinction of living tigers does not necessarily result in the disappearance of belief at all levels of society.

Purpose: Evidence regarding the performance of digital dentures (DDs) fabricated using 3D printing is insufficient. This study aimed to evaluate patient satisfaction with conventional dentures (CDs) and DDs fabricated using 3D printing.Methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted between November 2017 and May 2020. In the CD-DD group, CDs were fabricated before DDs, while the protocol was reversed in the DD-CD group. The primary outcome was patient satisfaction, quantified using a 100-mm visual analog scale, which assessed chewing efficiency, pain, stability, retention, comfort, esthetics, ease of cleaning, phonetics, and general satisfaction. Secondary outcomes were quality of life (QOL), number of visits, time required for definitive denture fabrication, number of adjustment appointments, and time required for denture stabilization after denture delivery.Results: Patient satisfaction with CDs was superior in terms of phonetics, ease of cleaning, stability, comfort, and general satisfaction. Secondary outcomes such as social disability and the number of clinic visits were significantly lower in patients with DDs. However, the two groups showed no significant differences in the other outcomes. Although patient satisfaction with DDs was inferior to that with CDs, 20% of patients preferred and used DDs (12 patients preferred CDs, and three patients opted for DDs).Conclusion: Although patient satisfaction or QOL with DDs may be somewhat inferior to that with CDs, 20% of patients preferred and used DDs daily. Thus, DDs fabricated using 3D printing may have comparable practicality and efficacy to CDs.

Abnormal vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation and migration are involved in restenosis following percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTCA) as well as in the development and progression of atherosclerosis. We investigated the mechanisms underlying the inhibitory effect of the sesquiterpene 3-oxo-5αH,8βH-eudesma-1,4(15),7(11)-trien-8,12-olide (1) on rat VSMC proliferation and migration. VSMCs were isolated from rat aorta, and then the effect of 1 on cell proliferation and migration was examined using methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and chemotaxis assays, respectively. Compound 1 had a potent inhibitory effect on fetal calf serum-induced VSMC proliferation. This effect correlated with reduced expression of cyclin D1. In addition, 1 also inhibited platelet derived growth factor (PDGF)-induced migration of VSMCs. These results indicate that 1 is a promising candidate for additional biological evaluation to further define its potential as an inhibitory modulator of VSMC responses that contribute to restenosis following PTCA and to the development and progression of atherosclerosis.
