This paper, which focuses on the dynamic interplay between tutor and student at the writing center tutorial, investigates when and how writers become aware of their necessary revisions. Six writing-center tutorial dialogues at Waseda University were transcribed and analyzed. By coding 1639 utterances, four aspects were revealed. Writers become aware of their necessary revisions when: the tutor responded with shared emotions, the exchange allowed the writer to fully talk about his/her intentions, the writer-tutor exchange focused on the problem that writer himself indicated, and the tutor shared his/her reaction as a reader when they talked about the writer's intention. These aspects of tutor-writer interaction could be important features of tutor training.
