The aim of study is an attempt to make clear the development of the concept of "gentleman" in relation to its social structure in nineteenth century. It had been said that so called sportman-ship and fairplay in modern sport was influenced and was formed by the middle classes, and made the remarkable development. Namely, England was first country to industrialize and development of modern sport-formation be seemed to just a reflect of this economic change, however, this answer based on such rude economic determinism is unsatisfactory. And the important thing is change in the gentlemanly behaviour which ocured in that connection. From this point of view, the concept of "gentleman" in nineteenth century will be discussed in this paper, mainly concerning the concept of "gentleman" treated in the works of C. kingsley and T. Hughes.

わが国のトップレベルにあるスポーツ選手116名(ボールゲーム)を対象にして,11項目の視覚機能を調査した。調査対象を監督,コーチの合議によりA,B,Cランクにわけ各群の視覚機能を比較した。その結果,A>B>Cの順で視覚機能が優れており競技力との間に関係がみられた。Aランクは11項目のうち,10項目においてB,Cランクより優れていた。AランクとCランクの差は明らかであったが,AとBランク,BとCランクの差はそれに比較して少なかった。Aランクは動体視力,焦点調節,深視力,眼と手の協応動作の4項目でB,Cランクより優れており,これらの視覚機能はボールゲームの状況判断の知覚的部分において重要な働きをしているものと考えられた。

我々は外界を時間的には「コト」として, 空間的には「モノ」として, 切り取って把握している。言語の簡潔性, 経済性などの理由から, 英語においては, 本来「モノ」を表わすべき表現が「コト」を表わすのに用いられることが, 日本語より多い。故に二義性が生じることになる。本稿では, この二義性を異なる基底構造をもつ別の表現であり, 表層構造において, 同一になったものと考える。「コト」を表わす「モノ」表現は「コト」を表わす「コト」表現と同様に基底構造において, EVENTを有し, それ故この種の句をeventive NPと命名する。このEVENTは表層にいたる段階で消去される。nominalizationは本来eventive NPのみであるはずであるが, non-eventive NPも存在することは注意を要する。さらにeventive constructionと日本語との関係を論じ, eventiveという概念が英文理解上不可欠であることを示す。

アディソンは, ロンギノスのOn the Sublimeの第三十五節を基盤にして想像力論の中心的部分を形成した。同じくロンギノスの影響を受けたデニスが, 宗教的, 感情的側面を継承したのに対し, アディソンは美学的側面を発展させている。そして自然界へ目を向けることによってロンギノス以来の自然思想に新たな局面を切り開いたことは, アディソンの最大の功績の一つである。

There have been a lot of tales about a fox as a kind very mystical animal since the ancient times. In the ancient Japan, the fox was treated as INARI spiritual being on the one hand, and spurned as the evil personification on the other hand. This paper deals with the study of five ascects of the relation between fox and humankind, and the analysis of the reason and the background of the relation.

Abstract. Let f(x) be continuous on the interval [a, b]. The mean value M(f) of f(x) on [a, b] is defined as follows : [numerical formula] where we denote by F(x) the primitive function of f(x). In the case when F(x) is unknown, we must calculate Ad (f) by the aid of so-called approximate formulas. In this paper, we shall obtain first an asymptotic expansion of the mean value M(f) with the terms of Riemann's quadrature by parts and next its end-points correction formula. We remark that the celebrated Euler-Maclaurin's summation formula is an immediate consequence of our asymptotic expansion just obtained. Further we shall derive some approximate formulas of mean value based on the function-values at random points.

Thomas Pennant was a naturalist, antiquarian, zoologist and travel writer in the eighteenth century. As a zoologist, he published British Zoology and this book made him a fellow of the Royal Society. His interest in zoology and botany brought him to Scotland and he wrote A Tour in Scotland and Voyage to The Hebrides which Dr. Samuel Johnson praised highly in spite of Dr Percy's bitter objection to the book. This book was the beginning of Thomas Pennant's career as a travel writer. A Tour in Wales was one of the most popular and important guidebooks of his time. In the book, he depicted the natural beauty of Wales, Welsh culture, the ancient ways of Welsh life, and the early stages of the industrial revolution in Wales. One of the most influential things Pennant did in his book was the re-evaluation of Owain Glyn Dwr. Pennant created a new image of Owain as a national hero who fought England for Welsh independence.

Although he defined the poetical quality which Shakespeare possessed so enormously as "Negative Capability", Keats himself seemed to have the almost same character as Shakespeare had. But a careful examination will show the fundamental difference between Keats and Shakespeare. The distinct difference between them is not the quality but the structure of their minds. As he said "Fair is foul, and foul is fair", Shakespeare accepted any contradictions and saw the real world from various angles. On the contrary Keats saw the world through the eye of beauty and loved the essence behind the appearance. Keats admired Shakespeare and tried to reach the height of his art. But after all he could not write any play as valuable as Shakespeare's. The structure of his mind was not fitted enough for writing plays. But once he took a pen for lyric, his great odes for example, he did miracle. It may be said that his great achievement in the field of lyrical poetry mainly depended upon his innate "negative capability" that was slightly different from Shakespeare's great "Negative Capability."

キーツの"Ode on a Grecian Urn"に登場する二つの異った場面は, このOdeを解釈する上で一つの重要な鍵となる。特に第四連における「小さな町」が死の世界を象徴するものであるとすれば, その死の町を出て, 犠牲の祭壇へと歩む人々の姿に永遠の美を求めるキーツの姿, および想像力のアレゴリーを見い出すことができるのである。

"Hardboiled" is an adjective for the style of Earnest Hemingway and Dashiell Hammett. Rarely have critiques these days said that their styles are similar because Hemingway is a Nobel Prize winner and is supposed to be a greater artist, who has been influenced by eminent modernists such as Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound, than Hammett, who is just a detective story writer from a pulp magazine for the lowbrow. Both of them, however, definitely shared the same Zeitgeist after World War I, which led to a nihilistic resignation to the destroyed identity and the consequential isolation from the community. Their "hardboiled" style could unexpectedly be born from the same root in the different places, Paris and San Francisco in the 1920s

This study aimed to examine the rivals, the interpersonal relations that presuppose competition. Among 393 high school students (242 men and 151 women)who cooperated, 165 students had a rival and 228 didn't. Students were investigated the consciousness toward competition of themselves and their rivals. Those who did not have a rival answered about a friend instead. First, a rival was categorized into "a standard", "a target person", or "a good match". It was shown that students with a rival had higher competitive consciousness and were more positive toward competition compared to the students without a rival. However, closeness was not a significant factor, which suggested that rivals were identified as friends at the same time. Second, path analyses revealed that each rival type had different path models. As for the relations of one-sided rival cognition ("a standard" and "a target person"), significant paths were drawn toward consciousness of the subject person only, but in the case of a relation of mutual rival cognition ("a good match"), paths toward consciousness of both the subject person and his/her rival were significant. This result suggested assuming the same cognitive process as him/her also to the rival.

2つのn次正方行列A,BがAB=E_nをみたせば必然的にBA=E_nとなることはよく知られた事実である。このことの証明は,行列式を用いて大学初年級程度の線形代数学の知識の範囲内でできる。しかしこの命題は本来行列式とは無関係であり,より一般的な代数学の定理から導くことができる。この論文においては,上の命題を系として含む一般的な代数学の定理を提示する。同時に,工学部系の数学教育では扱い難い環と圏の理論を,上述のことに関連させて教育内容とし得ることを示す。この論文は,愛知工業大学情報通信工学科平成12年度と平成13年度の卒業論文(参考文献[2],[6])を発展させたものである。
