The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different step movement of relay starts with a back plate in competitive swimming. Twelve elite swimmers performed three different types of relay start and Kick Start. The start motions were recorded by six video cameras, and the 3D-DLT method was used to calculate the kinematic variables. As a result, there were no significant difference for male swimmers in the variables related to velocity and angle between No-Step and Single-Step, but the Advanced-Step attained a higher horizontal velocity at take-off. In female swimmers, there was no difference in all relay starts. In addition, Advanced-Step did not exceed the performance of the Kick Start. This fact shows that swimmers don't make the advantage that they don't have to make a pause in a relay start.

In the 1950s, there were miserable water accidents that many children had drowned in Japan. As measures to such accidents, the Japanese government promoted swimming education and made swimming a compulsory subject in the elementary and ju-nior high school. Because many of the victims were a clothing state, some swimming leaders and researchers started studies on the swimming with clothes on in 1980s.  In the swimming with clothes on, there are two major purposes. One is to train basic swimming abilities not to be drowned, available even in the clothing state. Another is to acquire survival abilities to stay floating safely until a rescue.  According to the history of swimming education in Japan and the actual situation of the instruction about water safety in the world, clothed swimming is a part of the method to obtain water safety and should be planned in conjunction with developing individual abilities not to be drowned, which are included in the basic and fundamental swimming skills.

For competitive swimmers, the streamlined position is the most important position for reducing water resistance. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of spinal alignment during the streamlined position on passive drag generated by towing. Twenty-three male collegiate swimmers underwent a spinal alignment test and a passive drag test. The spinal alignment test measured the angles of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis when the participants took the prone streamlined position on land. The spinal alignment data were collected using a Spinal Mouse to record the sagittal outline of the back. The passive drag test at streamlined position was measured by the passive towing method using a towing series comprising four 20-m towing trials at towing speeds of 0.7 m/s, 1.2 m/s, 1.7 m/s, and 2.2 m/s. Significant correlations were found between the angle of thoracic kyphosis and the coefficients of drag at 1.2 m/s, 1.7 m/s, and 2.2 m/s. No significant correlations were found between the angle of lumbar lordosis and coefficient of drag at any towing speed. These results suggest that the angle of thoracic kyphosis during the streamlined position would have a significantly effect on passive drag generated by towing.

The aims of this study were to evaluate performances during the start phase using both the kick start and the track start and to compare kinematic parameters for sex differences. Eleven male and 10 female elite collegiate swimmers executed the two start techniques in random order. Trials were recorded using three synchronized video cameras sampling at 60 frames/s and analyzed in the 2-dimensional sagittal plane. Paired t-testing was used to compare all variables between the two techniques. When differences in kinematic parameters were observed, absolute differences between with or without start plate were calculated. Two-way analysis of variance was used to compare parameters between males and females. In male swimmers, block time and 15-m time were significantly shorter for the kick start than for the track start. Horizontal velocity and speed at take-off were greater for the kick start than for the track start. In female swimmers, the 15-m time was significantly shorter for the kick start than for the track start. Horizontal velocity at take-off was greater for the kick start than for the track start. In addition, 15-m time was comparably improved by using the kick start for both male and female competitive college swimmers.

国際オリンピック委員会(以下IOCと略す)の定める評価基準に照らすと,水球競技はその歴史と伝統において他のオリンピック種目より秀でているものの,5大陸への普及度とTV露出度においてその評価は低い.水球競技の発展のため,国際水泳連盟(以下FINAと略す)は国際試合数の増加や審判の能力向上に努める一方,"よりゴール数の多い,よりスペクタクルなゲーム"を目指してルール改正に踏み切ろうとしている.このルール改正は,日本などの小型選手を抱える国にとって有利に働くことが予想されている.一方日本国内では,日本オリンピック委員会(以下JOCと略す)を始めとして多くの競技団体において,従来の学校教育主導型による選手の育成制度の限界が指摘され,一貫した指導理念と個人の特性や発達段階に基づいてトップレベルの競技者へと選手を導くシステムの必要性が叫ばれている.水球競技においても,ジュニア期の選手育成に関してはいくつかの問題点を抱えている.これらの問題点を改善する新たな競技者育成システムを開発し,FINAの提唱する新ルールを追い風としながら,未来の日本水球の競技力向上に繋がる海図が描けるだろうか?

Physical strength and performance test (PSPT) results for elite junior divers selected annually in the diving competition finals of the National Junior High School Selection Swim Meets (1998∼2005) were studied. It was found that the relationship between the PSPT results and the competition scores compared from the viewpoint of the annual results were as follows: the PSPT results for both genders indicated gradual improvements among male and female springboard divers, and male and female platform divers (ANOVA: p<0.05). The competition scores for springboard diving also indicated gradual improvements as mentioned above. Various athletic abilities, such as the flexibility of the shoulder joints, body tucks, etc., and especially muscular strength were improved during the PSPT. It was recognized that this unique improvement in the PSPT and competition scores have been achieved by using newly developed training systems.

The purpose of this study was to determine the critical combination of all four elements which expressed the threshold of fatigue in interval training by using the critical swimming velocity that was an effective index when we set training strength, and to make a model that we could use as an indicator when we prescribed the training menu that accepted an individual. Only for 50m at repeated distance, we set a different rest time in three phases of different swimming velocity each and performed a test to let subjects repeat exercise up to fatigue. In addition, we measured the maximum repetitions that could repeat exercise. As a result, it became clear that the maximum repetitions that could repeat interval training without reaching fatigue in a certain swimming velocity was in proportion to the total rest time. And then, we were able to see the relations with the repetitions and the rest time in three phases of different swimming velocity. Furthermore, we were able to get relations with the rest time and the swimming velocity which expressed the threshold of fatigue in the arbitrary repetitions by fixing the repetitions. It was concluded that we were able to determine the critical combination from the above-mentioned by this study.
