We think that Shiko might have practiced haikai previous to becaming a disciplle of Basyo; however we can not find any evidence to support this hypothesis. Morever Shiko himself makes no mention of practicing haikai before becaming a disciplle of Basyo. Perhaps Shiko is telling the truth. Shiko has been very much misunderstood until now. The reason is that Shiko has been regarded simply as just another haikaishi. We know that Shiko said he studies Zen, Zyukyo, Raoshi (tao), and Chinese poetry diligently starting at around 9 years old. When Shiko became a disciple of Basyo, Basho's haikai would have been a philosophical way of life. In addition, this philosophy would have been considered superior for Shiko. When we look at it from this point of view, it helps us to better understand the method and theory behind Shiko's haikai composition. In this paper, I wish to make it clear from my investigation into Shiko's own words about himself prior to becoming a disciple of Basho, that Shiko considered haikai a philosophical way of life.

This paper is an attempt to examine the psychoanalytic method of literatureinterpretation by Sigmund Freud in Der Wahn und die Träume in W. Jensens Gradivaand intends to confirm the failures in his applied psychoanalysis. However, this paperdoes not reject psychoanalysis itself, but rather aims to highlight its theoreticalproblems and to utilize its marvelous analytic power more effectively. The method of testing this hypothesis is confronting Jensen’s Gradiva with Freud’sDer Wahn und die Träume in detail in order to emphasize the strangeness,insufficiency and forced nature of Freud’s interpretation which arises from theapplication of the theoretical apparatus of psychoanalysis. Especially it is proved withmorphological survey of images that the delusion and the dreams of the hero are notevoked by the repression of the infantile sexus but by his fascination on theembodiment of a classical ideal in a relief. Thereby this paper shows an alternativereading of Gradiva to that of Freud, and demonstrates a new interpretation on thepsychoanalytic basis.

And she felt that her inevitable fate lay concealed in Mexico. Later she met the leaders of a movement of Quetzalcoatl: Ramon and Cipriano. Quetzalcoatl is a rare bird with green wings. In Mayan Mythology, it is said that a goddess had swallowed emerald and consequently it was born. Christianity saddled a person with a heavy burden and set up the hell. But the humanity Lawrence yearned for was in the pre-Christian ancient heathen world. Kate wore the bridal dress of green with an emerald ring. Quetzalcoatl was a rare bird with green wings. The term of endearment for Ireland is 'The Emerald Isle.' In Lawrence, green was a color having magnificent nobility. He Regarded King Arthur and Quetzalcoatl as the hero. So Lawrence fused the Celts and Mexico in The Plumed Serpent. Eventually 'Mexico is another Ireland.'

"Chour yakuninen-Kugatsu-Jusannichi Gendainagonke Utaawase" and"Chouryakuninen-Fuyu Gendainagonke Utaawase" were two utaawase( waka poetrycompetitions), both held in 1038 at the homestead of Minamotono Morofusa. Thesetwo Gendainagonke Utaawase were recorded in Volume 13 of "Nijukanbon RuijuuUtaawase" (Ruijuu Utaawase in 20 volumes). Unfortunately, the original manuscriptsof the two Gendainagonke Utaawase recorded in Ruijuu Utaawase have been missingfor a long time, and the only extant copies are transcripts of the original manuscriptsor descendants of there. Until recently material on the two Gendainagonke Utaawase has been limited tosearch records made at the time when the original manuscripts which had not yetbeen lost of the two Gendainagonke Utaawase were designated as National Treasuresin 1936, partial photographs of the original manuscripts owned by the CulturalProperties Protection Committee, and transcripts. Due to the limitations of theavailable materials, uncertainties regarding the two Gendainagonke Utaawase wereinevitable. Scholars had long hoped for the original manuscripts to come to light. This thesis is based on an examination of the original two Gendainagonke Utaawaserecorded in Ruijuu Utaawase, to which the other was granted access. Examination ofthe original manuscripts enabled uncertainties in the search records and transcriptsto be solved. It truly can be said that the original manuscripts have a great value asmaterials for the study of Japanese literature. The original manuscripts are not simply valuable materials for the study of Japaneseliterature, these are valuable cultural properties in their own right as well. Datingback to the Heian period, they are priceless works of ancient art and have been designated as Important Cultural Properties. It is unlikely that these manuscripts willbe placed again in public view. In view of this and in order to more fully assistresearchers in Japanese literature, the owner of the manuscripts has kindly permitteda photographic reproduction of the entire text of the manuscripts to be published inthis thesis.
