While restorations have been made by several authors of the whole bodies of several moas, none has given much attentiou to the detailed restoration of the heads of each form. Herewith are published studies of the probable apearance in life of the birds of four extinct New Zealand birds, Dinornis, Anomalopteryx, Emeus and Euryapteryx, reconstructed by the author from their skulls.

According to the Checklist of Japanese Birds (fifth and revised edition) published in 1974 <i>Accipiter nisus</i> is a common summer visitor in Hokkaido. However, <i>A. nisus</i> has been occasionally observed in winter in different areas of Hokkaido. As part of avifaunal studies at Tomakomai (Tomakomai Experiment Forest of the Hokkaido University), Bibai, Sapporo and Ebetsu (Nopporo Forest Park), data were obtained on occurrences of <i>A. nisus</i> from November to March of next year. Study areas were covered with snow from early December to mid-March. A total of 50 birds were recorded. In most cases they were seen flying above residental of wooded areas. On rare occasions birds were seen attempting to catch <i>Parus major</i> or <i>Turdus naumanni</i>. Based on information derived from the present study and reports published previously, <i>A. nisus</i> observed in winter is not late remaining or early arrived birds, but wintering ones.

The nightjar, <i>Caprimulgus indicus</i>, was found incubating eggs at the young plantation of <i>Abies sachalinensis</i> at Toma-cho, Kamikawa Province on 15 June, 1971 and at the cut-over area dominated by <i>Sasa paniculata</i> at Bibai, Sorachi Province on 22 June, 1971. The clutch size was 1 and 2, respectively. In the latter case young hatched on 8 July and their development was recorded till 22 July, 15 days after hatching. Thereafter they disappeared from the nesting site. It is said that adults feigen get hurt or threaten by their queer posture when predators approach them. During the present study, however, these behaviors were rarely observed.

ウトナイト沼とその周辺で,1967~1972年の秋と冬(10月から翌年3月まで)に鳥類の観察を行なった(この調査の一部は,日本鳥類保護連盟の依頼で行なった鳥獣保護事業基本調査である)。この調査で記録した鳥類は65種である。これらの種類の季節変化を明らかにし,このうち水鳥類,ワシタカ類については個体数も調べた。またおもなものについては,種ごとに詳しい観察結果をつけ加えた。

(1)帯広市岩内の落葉広葉樹天然林とカラマツ人工林で1983,1984両年の繁殖期に森林構造と鳥類群集との関係を調べた.<br>(2)天然林は多層構造をもつが,人工林は樹種,森林構造ともに単純であった.<br>(3)天然林の鳥類は21種,14.8つがいで,多様度指数は,3.300であったが,人工林ではそれぞれ12種,11.0つがい,2.084であった.<br>(4)天然林ではアオジ,ハシブトガラ,ヤブサメなど樹上で採餌し,樹洞や樹枝上で営巣する鳥類が優占し,人工林ではホオジロやウグイスなど低木や地上で採餌,営巣する鳥類が優占した.<br>(5)天然林と人工林の鳥類群集の類似度指数は,0.42であった.

Observatins of sea-bird colonies made in May and July, 1959, and June and July, 1960 on Moyururi Island off southeastern Hokkaido, are reported. <br>The island measures 3km. of costal lengh with elevation of 30m. from the sea level. It is a bare and uninhabited island. <br>Twenty-six species of birds including 12 species of sea birds were recorded. Of the sea birds, 7 species breed on this island (Table 1). There were about 120 individuals of <i>Phalacrocorax capillatus</i>, about 70 <i>P. urile</i>, about 400 <i>Larus schistisagus</i>, about 200 <i>L. crassirostris</i>, 29 <i>Uria aalge</i>, about 160 <i>Cepphus carbo</i> and about 230 <i>Lunda cirrhata. Cerorhinca monocerata</i> could not be encountered because of the nocturnal habit. Breeding sea birds had eggs during May and June, and young during June and July.<br>The colonies of <i>Phalacrocorax urile, Larus schistisagus</i> and <i>Lunda cirrhata</i> on this island form the southern limit of their breeding range. In <i>Uria aalge</i> Ko-jima in the Japan Sea side and Moyururi Is. in the Pacific side, are the southern limis. Therefore Moyururi Island is very important ornithogeographically.

Observations were made on birds at Bibai, situated in the northern part of Ishikari Plain, central Hokkaido, from April 1966 to November 1973. Bibai occupies an area of 275 km<sup>2</sup>. The western half is occupied largely by cultivated fields, greater part of which is rice paddies and the eastern half is hills covered with deciduous trees. There are residental portions along the artery street runing from north to south. Mean temperature showed 6.8&deg;C, varying from -8.0&deg;C in January to 21.9&deg;C in August. There was snow cover which attained a depth of 1 m from late December to early March.<br>A total of 105 species of birds were recorded during the study. In the present study, the birds fell into resident, summer visitor, winter visitor or transient according to seasons that they occur in Hokkaido. Summer visitors and residents included 57 and 30 species, respectively. The remaining was winter visitors, transient, or rare species. They were recorded from Ishikari Plain by previous workers except for <i>Cygnus olor</i> which is considered to be a fugitive from a park. By the present study it was appear that <i>Motacilla alba</i>, <i>Turdus naumanni</i> and <i>Sturnus cineraceus</i> wintered in small numbers in Bibai. In addition, a indirect evidence showing the breeding of <i>Zesterops palpebrosa</i> was obtained.<br>The number of species increased with summer visitors arriving at from April to June and decreased from October to March of next year. Therefore the winter avifauna was characterized by rather small number of species as compared with that of central Honshu.<br>The study area includes deciduous forests, cultivated fields, bogs, swamps, riserviors and residental portions as habitats of birds. Consequently the avifauna of Bibai consists of forest and grassland birds, waterfowl and birds occurring at residental portions. Of forest birds, however, species preferring coniferous forest occured only in winter. <i>Locustella ochotensis</i>, which occures ordinaly in grassland of northern and eastern Hokkaido, was not recorded from Bibai.

No breeding record for Smew, <i>Mergus albellus</i> Linn&eacute;, has hitherto been known in Japan ("A Hand-List of Japanese Birds", 4th edition, 1958). Reported here are : 1. Six adults and 5 young were observed at Wakasakanai, the northern part of Hokkaido, July 1, 1961. 2. The pond, where Smews were observed, was in fir forest and about 50m. in diameter. <i>Carex curvicollis</i> and its allies were on the watersurface.

An adult female accompanied by 8 ducklings of <i>Mergus serrator</i> and an female with 3 ducklings of <i>M. merganser</i> were observed swimming over Reservoir Iwamatsu on July 8 and 9, 1964. This reservoir, ca. 3 km long and ca. 800 m wide, lies in the central part of Hokkaido, being surrounded by summer forests of <i>Betula Maximowiczii, Quercus mongolica, Ulmus Davidiana japonica, Cercidiphyllum japonicum, Tilia japonica, Acer mono</i>, etc.; a drag road and a forest railroad run together along its eastern coast (Fig. 1).

1.インド北西部ジャムー&bull;カシミール州のラムナガールに1973年10月31日より12月6日まで滞在し,冬の鳥を調査した.Habitat 内の構造特性と鳥の採食形式との関係について考察した.2.調査地は人工的な農山村で,鳥の環境として,松林,広葉落葉樹林,マメ科疎林,ブッシュ地,芝生草原,水田,河原,人家に分け,各々の特定的な構造に対応する種構成,個体の相対量が見つかった.3.ツグミ亜科の種が多数越冬しており,各 habitatに対応する生活空間を分けている.その生活空間は,1)地表面でその近くに跳びついて攻撃し,特定の監視所は持たない,2)ブッシュ上の特定の監視場所から地表面をねらって飛びついて攻撃する,3)林内の特定の監視場所から樹間空間に flycatching をする,という3型に分けられる.ラムナガールの冬には,典型的なヒタキ亜科の生活空間はあいており,ツグミ亜科がその下部要素へ入っている.4.鳥の集合に,1)警戒行動による集合,2)採食群による集合,3)コーラスグループによる集合が見つかった.さわがしいムードによる集合は各種の生活空間の活用性を拡大する生物的創造空間を示している.5.冬のテリトリー行動が目立った.ツグミ亜科には単独でテリトリアルなものが多い.オープンな場にいるものと,flycatching をするものは単独テリトリーを持つ.しかし,異性間テリトリーは見られない.Plumbeus Redstart では雄間テリトリーの中に雌は単独でいて,番いにはなっていない.Blueheaded Redstart では雄間テリトリーの中に排他的な雌が共存していて,番いにはなっていない.
