This is the first record of the burrows of the Japanese mitten crab Eriocheir japonica. Morphologies of the burrows found in the clay sediment used by this crab were recorded by excavating them in a small freshwater river in Japan. Only E. japonica was found inside 2 of the 10 burrows examined (15 crabs and one crab, respectively), and the other 8 were empty. Crabs of various sizes (6.1–47.0 mm in carapace width) were collected from inside the occupied burrows. Burrow morphology ranged from single tunnels to complex burrows with multiple openings and tunnels. Openings (2–10 cm in diameter) were mostly located underwater. The single tunnels were 14–65 cm long. Considering the different digging habits of other burrowing animals found in this area, it can be concluded that E. japonica constructed these burrows. Burrows resembled those of the Chinese mitten crab E. sinensis, but were different in their location (freshwater vs. tidal), sediment type (clay vs. sand and silt), opening placement (mainly underwater vs. intertidal) and occupation rate (low vs. high). The low occupation rate suggests that E. japonica do not always rest in their burrows and rather prefer to hide beneath the riverbed’s large rocks. These results reflect the adaptation of E. japonica to the unstable environment of Japanese rivers.

The pennellid copepod Lernaeenicus ramosus Kirtisinghe, 1956 is a parasite of perciform and blenniiform fishes in the Indo-West Pacific region. A metamorphosed female of the species was collected from a perchlet, Chelidoperca hirundinacea (Valenciennes, 1831), caught on the neritic continental shelf of Suruga Bay, central Japan. The copepod is almost exclusively a parasite of groupers (Epinephelus spp.) in the serranid subfamily Epinephelinae, but C. hirundinacea belongs to a different serranid subfamily Serraninae. The present collection of L. ramosus represents its first record from a serranine fish in the Indo-West Pacific region.

相模湾以南台湾までの河口域にすむユビアカベンケイガニ(イワガニ科)はSesarma erythrodactylumの学名で知られている.基産地はシドニーである.しかし,日本産とオーストラリア産の標本を比較研究したところ,それぞれ独立した別種であることがわかった.このためユビアカベンケイガニを新種Sesarma actsとして記載した.なお,オーストラリアの種は原記載の綴りに従って,S. erythodactyla(Hess, 1865)とすべきである.

中国湖南省において,第1著者は近年大型甲殻類の生物地理学的研究を継続している.1992年8月,多数のヒメヌマエビ属の未記載の標本が採集された.本標本は,Caridina mengae,および"C.typus"グループのヌマエビ類と類似したが,背側が無歯の短い額角を持ち,第1胸脚の指部が掌部よりも長く,雄の第1腹肢内股基部に長い羽状毛を備え,尾部後縁中央には棘がなく,第3顎脚の各節の長さと幅の比によりC.mengaeと区別された.また,雄第1腹肢内肢の形状およびその内突起が内肢中央部からでることより,"C.typus"グループの他の10種とも容易に区別できた.以上のことから本種をヒメヌマエビ属の1新種,C.mengaeoidesとして記載した.

岩手県宮古湾の潮間帯岩礁域から採集された3個体の標本に基づき、ホンヤドカリ属の新種Pagurus spina(新称:ヒメケアシホンヤドカリ)を記載した。本新種は、本邦沿岸に普通にみられるケアシホンヤドカリP. lanuginosus De Haanに類似するが、鉄脚の坐節腹面に棘をもつこと、右鋏掌部の内側縁に棘列を欠くこと、生時の色彩が異なるなどの特徴により容易に識別される。

Two new species of hippolytid shrimp, Lebbeus elegans sp. nov. and L. polyacanthus sp. nov., are described from the Sea of Japan, at depths of 250-400m. Lebbeus elegans is characterized by the absence of epipods on the second and third pereopods, distinct ventral blade of the rostrum and the rounded fourth abdominal pleuron. Lebbeus polyacanthus is compared with L. antarcticus (Hale, 1941), L. carinatus Zarenkov, 1976, and L. washingtonianus (Rathbun, 1902). Lebbeus polyacanthus differs from the latter three species in the more posteriorly arising posteriormost tooth of the dorsal rostral series and more numerous lateral spines on the meri of the third to fifth pereopods. Examination of the newly obtained material of L. kuboi Hayashi, 1992, enabled us to assess intraspecific variations of the species, including a variation in the development of the pereopodal epipods. Redescription of Lebbeus kuboi is provided and its affinity is discussed. These three species occur sympatrically. A brief note on the taxonomy and distribution of species of Lebbeus is also provided.

Cannibalism is considered a major cause of mortality among juveniles in nursery cultures of the mud crab Scylla serrata. Size grading is recommended as an effective measure to mitigate cannibalistic behavior; however, little is known about how body size differences influence cannibalistic episodes between juvenile individuals. We conducted one-to-one match experiments using hatchery-raised juveniles with carapace width between 12.5 and 33.3 mm. Two crabs were placed in an experimental arena for 24 h, and survival and pereiopod loss were subsequently observed. Large crabs always preyed on small crabs, and the probability of cannibalistic behavior significantly increased with the increasing relative size difference [RSD=1−(size of small crab)/(size of large crab)]. The loss of chelipeds and walking legs in the surviving small crabs amounted to 25% and 38%, respectively, and the proportion of lost walking legs increased with the increasing RSD, indicating the stronger aggressive behavior of larger crabs. This study suggests that maintaining size differences below the RSD threshold (0.34) at which 50% of the small crabs are cannibalized by large crabs would be an effective strategy to contain the occurrence of cannibalism in mud crab nursery cultures.

A new species of majid crab, Sakaija amicitiae n. sp., is described from New Caledonia Exclusive Economic Zone, Vauban seamount and the Chesterfield Atolls. The species is superficially similar to S. japonica (Rathbun, 1932) and S. santo Ng & Richer de Forges, 2015, from Vanuatu. Specimens from New Caladonia previously referred to S. santo are now referred to the new species. Sakaija amicitiae n. sp. can be distinguished from congeners by features of the carapace spines, proportions of the ambulatory legs and structure of the male first gonopod.

Three species of the sponge-dwelling lobster Eiconaxius are known from the eastern Pacific. Previous reports and descriptions were based on dead specimens. During a study by remotely operated vehicle, Eiconaxius baja was photographed in situ at the San Juan Seamount within a sponge of the family Phariidae. It tried to escape by swimming backward. Illuminated by the lights of the vehicle, the lobster had an orange color. The depth at which the lobster lives has no ambient light, so the function of the color remains uncertain.

アメリカザリガニProcambarus clarkiiの鉗脚に種々の形の過剰再生体を誘発した.前節の一部を側方から神経幹の1本を切断するようにU-字型に切除すると,前節の基部側と先端側それぞれの傷面から不動持と同様の構造物が向かい合って形成された.この1対の構造物は,傷の幅が相対的に広いと互いに離れており,それぞれの鈎爪と鋸歯は向かい合って形成された.この1対の構造物は,傷の幅が狭いと基部付近で融合しているが先端の方では二つに分かれるか,または全長にわたって融合した.後者の場合は,それぞれの鋸歯は背側または腹側に並列に形成されたが,鈎爪は形成されないか,または,先端に1対の鈎爪が形成されたが,鋸歯は形成されないものもあった.過剰再生体に鈎爪も鋸歯も形成されない,単一の棘状の構造物も形成されたが,これは1対の過剰再生体がより密に融合したものと考えられる.傷口から2〜3対の融合した構造物が形成された個体もあった.

An invasive freshwater shrimp of the genus Neocaridina Kubo, 1938 (Decapoda: Caridea: Atyidae) was collected from the Tomoe River of the Boso Peninsula, Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture, eastern Japan. We compared the morphological characteristics and mitochondrial DNA sequence variation of the specimens with those of other Neocaridina species. In particular, we assessed the mitochondrial DNA region encoding the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 [ND2] gene and the region encoding the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 [ND5] gene. Our specimens are most likely to be Neocaridina davidi (Bouvier, 1904), a species native to mainland China. This species may have entered Japan through intentional disposal or accidental escape from aquaria.

First stage larva of the deep-sea giant shrimp, Sclerocrangon rex is described and illustrated under laboratory conditions. The larvae hatched in the most advanced condition, such as in having stalked eyes, among the congeneric species with abbreviated development. The newly hatched first larvae were staying together by clinging maternal pleopods until the second stage.

DNA sequences from a portion of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene were used to examine genetic differentiation among the local coastal populations of the Japanese wood-boring isopod Sphaeroma wadai Nunomura, 1994. Of the 15 haplotypes identified, only 3 were shared among the sampled localities. The most dominant haplotype was shared by all populations from the Japanese mainland. All haplotypes identified from Okinawa Island and Iriomote Island were endemic to each island. For the Japanese mainland group, the haplotype network showed a star-like shape, with rare haplotypes radiating from the central most common haplotype by only one or two mutation steps. Haplotypes identified from Iriomote Island were separated by many steps from those identified from all other sampled localities, and haplotypes identified from Okinawa Island were separated by several steps from those identified from the Japanese mainland. Phylogenetic analyses revealed the existence of two lineages: one comprising specimens from Iriomote Island and the other comprising specimens from the Japanese mainland and Okinawa Island. These two lineages diverged at an uncorrected p-distance of 9.1%–10.3%, probably representing a different species. There were no clear morphological differences between the two lineages except for the propodus length of the seventh pereopod of male individuals.

A new species of the euphausiid-ectoparasitic isopod in the genus Heterophryxus Sars, 1885 is described based on an immature female specimen collected from the central North Pacific. The new species, Heterophryxus pacificus, can be distinguished from the immature females of H. appendiculatus Sars, 1885 and H. elongatus Schultz, 1977 in having (1) a wider and thicker body, (2) a cephalon without an anterior hollow, and (3) complex-shaped pereomeres 2 to 4. A diagnosis of the genus Heterophryxus is provided.

A new species of Palaemon is described from Cần Giớ District, Vietnam. This species has previously been reported from Vietnam as a colour morph of Palaemon sewelli (Kemp, 1925), to which it is clearly morphologically very closely related. However, the new species can be separated from P. sewelli through the position of the branchiostegal tooth relative to the branchiostegal groove, the shape of the suborbital lobe, a hirsute carapace and abdomen and the colour pattern of living individuals. The description of this new species brings the number of species of Palaemon known from Vietnam to eleven species.

A new species of the genus Chiromantes Gistel, 1848 s. str. is described from the Ryukyu Islands. The new species is distinguished from another species of Chiromantes s. str., C. haematocheir (De Haan, 1833), by having proportionately longer and less setose ambulatory legs, a relatively flatter carapace, larger eyes, proportionally narrower front, relatively broader male sixth abdominal segment, less inflated male chela, and distinct colouration. The present study also regards Holometopus serenei as a junior subjective synonym of C. haematocheir.

Two new species of the stenopodid shrimp genus Odontozona Holthuis, 1946 are described and illustrated based on material from several Indo-West Pacific localities, including Japan, Indonesia, Australia and Madagascar. Odontozona arbur sp. nov. is described on the basis of numerous specimens collected in Australia (Queensland, Western Australia), Indonesia, Japan and Madagascar. Odontozona stigmatica sp. nov. is described on the basis of a single specimen from Ishigaki Island, Ryukyu Archipelago, southern Japan. Odontozona arbur sp. nov. and O. stigmatica sp. nov. differ from all other species of the genus by a combination of morphological characters, mainly involving spination on the carapace and third pereopod, as well as sculpture of the pleon. This study increases the total number of species described in the genus Odontozona to 19, eight of them occurring in the Indo-West Pacific. An identification key to all species presently assigned to Odontozona is also presented.

We performed short-term cultivation of alive interna fragments of Sacculina polygenea Liitzen & Takahashi, 1997 isolated from the organism of its host, the coastal crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus (De Haan) and studied the histology of parasitic interna and their relationships with the gut and gonads of the host. It is shown that the colonial interna of S. polygenea comprises an extensive trophic system (roots and trunks) and a reproductive system represented by numerous primordia of externae at different stages of development. We observed asexual reproduction (blastogenesis) in the interna beginning with the development of numerous nuclei, dense aggregations of non-differentiated embryonic cells surrounded by a simple epithelium; later on each nucleus develops a primordium of a trophic module. An ovary with paired colleteric glands, paired male receptacles, and mantle with inner cavity and mantle opening arise in the anlagen of externae prior to their emerging to body surface of the crab, i.e., in the interna. The process of oogenesis begins in the primordium of the ovary; in late primordial externae we have found vitellogenic oocytes. Cells performing functions of ingestion, treatment, and accumulation of nutrients are located in the distal parts (rootlets) of the trophic system; the cells filled with nutrients then release the latter into root lumen, where the nutrients are conveyed toward the primordia and, later on, adult externae. Thus, we have visualized the colonial structure of S. polygenea interim comprising numerous elements of reproductive and trophic systems.

短尾類の被食防御機構としての有毒化の有効性を確認するため,1990年6月から1992年12月までの間スキューバで採集した有毒なスベスベマンジュウガニAtergatis floridusの自切の程度を調べた.性比はほぼ1:1であった.雌雄ともにかなりの程度自切がみられたが,自切頻度には雌雄差がみられ,雄(41.3%)は雌(18.4%)より高い値を示した.また,部位別の自切頻度も雌雄で異なり,雄では第1,3および4歩脚における自切頻度が鉗脚および第2歩脚のそれより有意に高かったのに対し,雌では鉗脚および各歩脚間に有為な差はみられなかった.本種の自切頻度は既報の他種と同程度であった.このことと,採集地点における本種の行動観察および捕食者との相互関係を考慮すると,主要な被食防御機構としての毒の保有の生態的意義は当初予想されたより低いと思われる.
