A new species of Hexapinus (Hexapodidae) is described from Hatoma Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan. Hexapinus patuma, new species, is morphologically close to H. latus Rahayu & Ng, 2014, but can be distinguished by the structures of the carapace and third maxilliped, as well as the degree of setation of ambulatory legs.

A rare xanthid crab species Cyrtocarcinus truncatus (Rathbun, 1906) is recorded from Ouvéa, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia, and Ishigaki Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan. This represents the first record of the species from outside Hawaii. Morphological features and its variations are described in detail.

Here, the aegathoid stage of Nerocila japonica Schioedte & Meinert, 1881 is described based on a specimen collected from the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, and its identity is confirmed by both morphology and molecular barcoding. Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 16S rRNA sequences of the collected individual shared ≥99% similarity with the previous DNA records of N. japonica. In terms of morphology, the aegathoid stage of the specimen examined in the present study differed from that of N. phaiopleura Bleeker, 1857 by intermediate size of the eyes and setation on pereopods. This is the first record of N. japonica infesting the red seabream Pagrus major (Temminck & Schlegel, 1843).

The Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, is a valuable and commonly exported European decapod crustacean, which experiences stress from point of capture and onward transport. Stressors such as air exposure duration (i.e. emersion period) and air temperature have been studied previously. We investigated whether mortality could be reduced by decreasing road vibrations during transport, and how physiological stress measurements were influenced in a transport simulation experiment, reflecting a typical short road journey along a supply chain. Baseline haemolymph samples were taken from lobsters sampled immediately after commercial capture using static traps (lobster pots). Individuals were emersed for one hour, either immobile or with continuous shaking; the latter to simulate conditions occurring during transport. Both treatments significantly increased Total Haemocyte Counts (THC) and serum glucose, lactate and ammonium concentrations compared to baseline animals. Individuals subjected to continuous shaking showed higher glucose and ammonium concentrations compared to individuals maintained immobile. We conclude that shaking appears to influence the physiological responses of N. norvegicus in addition to the effects of emersion alone, and the reduction of road vibrations (e.g. via simple cushioning) can reduce post-transport mortality.

Lithodoid and paguroid crabs are morphologically assigned to the superfamilies Lithodoidea and Paguroidea, respectively. Molecular analyses, however, have revealed closer genetic proximity of the lithodoid crabs to the family Paguridae than to other families of Paguroidea, provoking a long debate. We investigated the length and nucleotide sequence variation of the nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) in lithodoid and paguroid species. Uniquely short ITS1s (215–253 bp) were observed in seven lithodoid species. In contrast, ITS1 length varied considerably in 13 paguroid species belonging to the families Coenobitidae, Diogenidae, and Paguridae. Short-to-long ITS1s (238–1090 bp) were observed in five species of the family Paguridae, and medium to long ITS1s (573–1166 bp) were observed in eight species of the families Coenobitidae and Diogenidae. Considerably different size ITS1s coexisted in individual paguroid species. Nucleotide sequence analysis indicated that the short ITS1s observed in the family Paguridae were descendants of longer ITS1s and were homologous to the short ITS1 of lithodoid species. ITS1 sequences of the families Coenobitidae and Diogenidae shared no nucleotide elements with lithodoid and pagurid species. These molecular signals indicate that the short ITS1 in pagurid lineage was passed on to lithodoid lineage, strongly supporting the “hermit-to-king” crab hypothesis.

ごく最近,新種として記載されたヨモギホンヤドカリの分布と繁殖生態を,模式産地近くの函館湾葛登支の潮間帯において調べた.本種は潮間帯上部の潮線付近の転石域にパッチ状に分布し,季節的移動は見られない.4月から5月にかけて,雄が産卵直前の雌が入っている貝殻をはさみ持つ産卵前ガード行動が観察される.交尾・産卵直後にガード行動は終了する.抱卵雌は4月から2月の間に観察される.抱卵雌の出現時期とその後の卵の発達状態から,主な産卵期は5月で,雌は1年に1回産卵し,約9カ月間という長期にわたって抱卵することが明らかになった.交尾前ガード行動はホンヤドカリ属に普通に見られる行動であるが,長期にわたる抱卵期間は同地に生息する同属他種,あるいは他所に分布する同属のそれと比較しても非常に長く,きわだった繁殖特性といえる.このことは本種の属するホンヤドカリ属は,種類数の豊富さとともに,その繁殖特性にも多様な面が含まれることを示唆している.

函館湾,和歌山および熊本県天草松島から採集された標本に基づき,ホンヤドカリ属の1新種pagurus nigrofasciaを記載した.本種は,北アメリカ西岸に分布するP.samuelis(Stimpson,1857),P.hirsutiusculus(Dana,851),P.venturensis Coffin,1957,および日本を含む西部北太平洋温帯域に分布するP.filholi De Man,1887(ホンヤドカリ)に近縁であると考えられるが,いくつかの形態的特徴と色彩により容易に識別される.本新種は函館湾では周年にわたり潮間帯岩礁で普通にみられるが,他の産地では冬から初春にかけて出現するのみである.また,これまでの本邦各地における調査にも関わらず,本新種が採集されたのは上記の3カ所だけであった.Stimpson(1858)が,函館湾からP.hirsutiusculusとして記録したものが実際には本新種であった可能性があるが,標本はシカゴ大火災の際に失われたものと考えられ,現在では確認できない.標本に基づいたP.hirsutiusculusの本邦における記録は,stimpson(1858)の他にはYokoya(1933)による津軽海峡の水深110mからの採集記録があるが,Yokoyaの標本は採集水深が探すぎ,P.hirsutiusculusとも本新種とも異なるものと考えられる.最近の文献においても,本邦におけるP.hirsutiusculusの分布は現在のところ確認されていない.文献の記録に基づき,P.hirsutiusculusにはエゾホンヤドカリという和名が与えられてきたが,エゾホンヤドカリの分類学的位置を決定するのは現時点では不可能であり,本新種には新称ヨモギホンヤドカリを提唱する.

Acorn foraging activity and feeding behaviour by two species of potamid freshwater crabs (Geothelphusa grandiovata and Candidiopotamon okinawense) were studied at Yanbaru forest, northern Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan. Adult females of the two species were observed to inhabit burrows that were filled with acorns of Castanopsis sieboldii and Quercus miyagii. The burrows with the crabs as well as gathered acorns were distributed relatively close to a stream (0.8-5 m) at slopes of the forest. Acorns were either eaten with a part of the lower part or seed coat remaining, or vertically broken up and only the inside consumed. Feeding experiments under laboratory conditions indicated that the acorns eaten by G. grandiovata had the same feeding scars as the ones found around crabs burrows, suggesting that the crabs were indeed feeding on acorns. There were 1-24 uneaten acorn(s) observed from all burrows with gathered acorns. Some of the uneaten acorns were even germinated at both around opening of and in the burrow. The accumulation of acorns by the crabs thus inadvertently helps the dispersal of C. sieboldii and Q. miyagii along the slopes of valleys, where the seeds cannot easily lodge and germinate.

Tegumental scales are documented in two families of Caridea, viz. Hippolytidae (genus Lysmata) and Rhynchocinetidae (genera Cinetorhynchus and Rhynchocinetes), raising to seven the number of families in which such scales occur. The scales in Rhynchocinetidae are similar to those in Pandalidae, but the scales in Lysmata spp. are of a slightly different type than previously documented. SEM observations reveal that the scales easily abrade and attention is drawn to the possibility that tegumental scales may be more widespread across families, but are difficult to observe. Caution is advised when considering differences in pattern (not form) between species given this high potential for abrasion. Given the low number of documented occurrences across families and genera, the potential phylogenetic information content of tegumental scales is currently unknown, but could be informative.

We conducted two laboratory experiments to evaluate the dietary effects of phytoplankton and zooplankton on the larval survival, duration and growth of the amphidromous atyid shrimp Atyopsis spinipes. In the first experiment, commercially preserved or cultured phytoplankton Tetraselmis sp. and cultured zooplankton rotifers were used to rear larvae. In the second experiment, cultured Tetraselmis and rotifers were used to feed larvae for 17 days after hatching, after which the effect of supplementing their diet with Artemia nauplii was tested. The effects of different culture vessel volumes (8 mL and 40 mL) on larval performance were also assessed. In the first experiment, larvae fed only with preserved Tetraselmis did not survive to the juvenile stage, whereas larvae fed with rotifers showed better survival and development. In the second experiment, most larvae receiving Artemia supplementation survived to the juvenile stage. Larvae cultured in larger containers (40 mL) had significantly higher survival rates than those cultured in smaller containers (8 mL). The present study demonstrates larval culture methodologies for A. spinipes that can promote the development of larvae into the juvenile stage with high survival rates.

A morphological description is given for the postlarval specimen of the polychelid lobster, Pentacheles laevis, collected from Suruga Bay, on the Pacific coast of Japan. The specimen has been previously identified using the DNA barcoding method. Diagnostic larval characters distinguishing the previously known postlarvae in three genera, Pentacheles, Stereomastis, and Polycheles, are also noted.

The nonnative freshwater shrimp Palaemon sinensis (Sollaud, 1911) has been reported at various locations in Japan. This study compared environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis with conventional capturing and investigation as a method to detect P. sinensis in the Tama River. We developed species-specific primers to amplify a 225-bp fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene for eDNA analysis. The invasive shrimps were detected using eDNA analysis in all areas where they were observed using the capture and investigation method. Thus, eDNA analysis can be applied to detect sparsely distributed P. sinensis in the Tama River, making it a useful method to detect invasive shrimps and to help prevent ecological disruption.

We investigated the seasonal variability in fecundity and egg size in a Petrolisthes japonicus population by monthly sampling for one year on an intertidal cobble and boulder shore on the Boso Peninsula, Japan. Fecundity (number of eggs per brood) was determined for ovigerous females with non-eyed or eyed eggs in early (May and June), middle (July) and late (August and September) breeding periods. The long and short diameters of non-eyed eggs were measured, and the egg volume was calculated. Fecundity was positively correlated with female body size and found to be greater in the middle breeding period than in the early and late breeding periods. Egg loss occurred during embryogenesis, the egg loss rate being calculated as 44.6%, 14.8% and 30.2% from the non-eyed to the eyed egg stages in the early, middle and late breeding periods, respectively. Egg size decreased linearly from the early to the late breeding periods. It is inferred that the seasonal variability in reproductive output, fecundity and egg size in P. japonicus may be regulated by female nutritional conditions and seasonal fluctuations of food production for larvae, as well as a trade-off between the number and size of eggs in a brood.

A single ovigerous female of cymothoid isopod was collected from the branchial cavity of the African sailfin flyingfish, Parexocoetus mento (Valenciennes, 1847) in Kadogawa Bay, an inlet of the western North Pacific Ocean, southern Japan. Although the isopod specimen differs from Norileca triangulata (Richardson, 1910) in the number of articles of the antennula and the absence of small setae on the propodus of pereopods 1 and 2, it is similar to the species. However, the species was poorly originally described, and there are several differences between the original and subsequent descriptions and the specimen. Thus, this study refrains from identifying the specimen to species and reports it as N. aff. triangulata. This represents the first record of Norileca from Japan. Five species of cymothoid isopods including N. aff. triangulata are now known from Japanese flyingfishes, and a parasite-host list is provided.

A new genus and new species of potamid freshwater crab, Xestomon tacu, is described from Ta Kou mountain in southern Vietnam. The new genus is characterised by its transversely ovate and smooth carapace surface, the very low to undiscernible epigastric and postorbital cristae, complete absence of a flagellum on the third maxilliped, relatively short ambulatory legs, a male telson which is acutely triangular with the lateral margins distinctly concave, and a short stout male first gonopod which has the terminal segment gently curved upwards.

A lernaeid copepod, Lamproglena chinensis Yü, 1937, is redescribed based on the newly collected specimens from the snakehead Channa argus (Cantor) (Actinopterygii: Perciformes: Channidae) caught in Lake Imuta, Satsumasendai, Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu, southern Japan and the type specimens of L. ophiocephali Yamaguti, 1939, a junior synonym of L. chinensis, from the Kizu River, Kyoto Prefecture. The adult male was found from Japan for the first time. The collection of the species in this study represents the first record from Kyushu. The previous records of L. chinensis and its related species reported from Asian countries are also reviewed.

成体のアメリカザリガニProcambarus clarkii(頭胸甲長30-35mm)の鉗脚前節内部の組織を針で引っかき、また幼弱個体(頭胸甲長8-12mm)の鉗脚前節の一部を押しつぶして過剰再生体を誘発した。この再生体は、傷をつけてから第一回目の脱皮で突起状の構造物として生じた。構造物のなかには第二回目の脱皮で枝別れしたものもあった。しかし、枝別れした構造物でも関節は形成されなかった。成体の過剰再生体の先端には鈎爪が形成されていた。

Steene(1990)によって、華麗な写真に収められたバリ島のガラテアは、インド太平洋に広く分布するLauriea gardineri(Laurie, 1926)とは、体色が明らかに異なるほか、形態にも明瞭な相遠が見られ、新種L.siagianiとして記載された。これによって、従来単型属として知られたLauriea属に、第二の種を追加することになった。

During a taxonomic study of the snapping shrimp genus Alpheus from Japan and the Gulf of Thailand, it has been found that two species have been confounded under A. digitalis De Haan, 1844, which was originally described based on a single specimen possessing abnormal chelipeds. Differences between the two species are found in both morphology and coloration. Careful examination of published information of the holotype and supplemental material enable us to establish the true identity of A. digitalis. The new species, A. longiforceps, can be distinguished from A. digitalis by the more slender major chela with a sinuous, rather than convex, flexor margin, the longer male minor chela with a more elongate dactylus, and the possession of a single, rather than two, obliquely transverse white bands on the carapace and of a conspicuous dark brown spot on the lateral surface of the fourth abdominal tergum.
