The tympanic membrane of frog is exposed directoly to the external environment. It is almost round in shape, and is thickened in the central part. Circumferential part is thinner than central part. The tympanic mebrane was uniformly spread along the outer edge of the annular cartilage, and no pars flaccida was observed. Fibrous tissue of the lamina propria consist of radial collagen fiber. The tip of the columella consists of cartilage, loosely adhered to the dorsal surfase of the center of tympanic membrane. Along the columella, there was a loose, wrinkly connective tissue between the tympanic membrane and columella, that is the archetype of malleus handle. The annular cartillage was considered to be the original form of the external auditory canal.

Developmental anatomy of the tympanic membrane and its relation with the malleus handle was studied using fetal temporal bone specimens. During 16th week of gestation the intermediate mesodermal layer which consist of two laminas-radial layer laterally and circular layer medialy-originate around the tympanic ring as loose connective tissue. The inner circular layer hold the malleus handle and fuses with the periosteum (or perichondrium). The outer radial layer which is thicker than the outer circular layer contains copious blood vessels. After 30th week of gestation conjunction between malleus handle and inner circular layer become loose and lost except outer surface of the malleus handle. Only at the tip of the malleus periosteum is thick and hold by the circular layer which seems to become the umbo.

In the early morning on Jan. 6, 1982, 135 cetaceans were found stranded alive at Aoshima Beach, Miyazaki, Japan. Since Aristotle reported on the strnading of dolphins, single or mass stranding of various kinds of cetaceans have been reported from many parts of the world. However, the reason for such mass stranding is not still fully explained to everyone's satisfaction.We have examined one of them and found a lot of parasites in the bilateral tympanic cavities. The parasites were identified to belong to the genus Nasitrema and closest to Nasitrema gondo Yamaguchi. The number of the parasites were over 30 in each ears, and the mucous membrane of the cavity was inflammed. The ossicular chain was fixed especially the stapes was fixed at the oval window. The periotic bone including the labyrinth was studied histologically. In the labyrinth pathological changes were minimum. However, the octavus nerve was inflammed and many eggs with triangular shape in cross section were found near the nerve. From the findings obtained, we would like to conclude that parasitogenic otitic and octavus neuropathy should be a possible cause of live mass stranding of cetaceans.

Authors showed the inhibitory effect of Cepharanthin, a kind of Alkaloid, on the teratogenicity of maternal hypervitaminosis A in the rat in the previous report. At the present study, besides, the effect to the internal malformations induced by maternal hypervitaminosis A were investigated using the same materials of the previous study. Twenty-four fetuses from 2 mothers treated with excessive vitamin A and 31 from 3 mothers treated with both of excessive vitamin A and Cepharanthin were stained with Inouye's bone and cartilage staining method and the findings of their middle ear region were observed under the light stereoscopic microscope. Difference of middle ear findings between 2 groups suggested that the inhibitory effect of Cepharanthin to the teratogenic activity of excessive vitamin A acts even on the internal malformations of middle ear region by the membrane stabilizing effect of Cepharanthin.

In order to determine development of each part of human middle ear, the development processes of various parts from the middle tympanum to the antrum were observed and compared relatively based on the epithelial invasion the auditory tube at each stage of fetal development using fetal temple from 17th to 26th weeks of gestation. The middle ear cavity is considered to be formed through combined effects of various processes such as epithelial invasion of the auditory tube, resorption of the fetal connective tissue, thinning of the bone wall of the otic capsule, outward proliferation of the temporal bone due to cartilaginous and fibrous bone formations, and active bone metabolism at the mastoid cavity, with formation of a series of pneumatic space. It was found that the resorption process of the fetal connective tissue did not occur uniformly, with a persisting tendency for the area from the superior tympanum to the periovular window for a prolonged period. These findings are interesting embryologically in terms of the causal relation in development from the posterosuperior area of the steatoma to the superior tympanum of the middle ear.

Temporal bones are extracted from fresh cadavers, and the condition of only the ear-drum attachment to the temporal bone is made. Then, the dynamical characteristics of the ear-drum of the specimen are measured with a newly developed measuring apparatus. At the same time, applying the impedance theory of the tube to the external auditory canal and the energy method to the ear-drum, the equation corresponding to the output of the apparatus is obtained. Comparing the measurement results and the numerical results, the Young's modulus EE and Damping parameterξE=cE/2 (mEkE) 1/2 are determined to be EE=3.25×108 dyn/cm2 andξE=0.158.

Quick freeze, deep-etch study was done to observe the three-dimentional views of membranes and organelles of stria vascularis. Clathrin basckets of coated vesicles were clearly observed as honey-comb structure, composed of hexagons and pentagons. Most of the basckets were connected to its circumferance by short fibrils. It was seemed that the fibrils had some roles in vesicular transport in marginal cells. Microtubular bundles of cytoplasmic protrusions at base of marginal cells were also observed. Any linking-fibrils between microtubules were not seen in this portion. Many gap junctions were also observed between marginal cells, intermediate cells and basal cells. In some replcas, we observed many protrusions on PS face adjoining the EF face of gap junction.

Acute sensori-neural hearing loss after exposure to loud sounds in rock music was experimently studied. With guinea pigs exposed to rock music for tour hours a day during one week, parmanent threshold shift (PTSs) were not recorded. Next, temporal threshold shifts (TTSs) were examied after exposing guinea pigs to rock music for 1-4 hours. There was a increased temporal threshold shifts (TTSs) at over two hours.<BR>Finally, with guinea pigs exposed to rock music for three hours and restricted in the bottle filled with water, temporal threshold shifts (TTSs) were greatest, but parmanent threshold shifts (PTSs) were not recorded at seven days later.
