Natural rubber is a naturally occurring nano-composite, which possesses a complicated hierarchal structure. A primary structure of natural rubber is ω'-(trans)2-(cis)n-α' : that is, modified dimethylallyl group, 2 trans-1,4-isoprene units, about 5,000 cis-1,4-isoprene units and modified prenol group, aligned in this order. The ω'-terminal unit and α'-terminal unit may be attracted to proteins and phospholipids through strong attractive forces, which are comparable to attractive forces in chemical bonds; so that, three dimensional network structure of natural rubber is formed with the proteins and phospholipids to generate gel fractions. The proteins and phospholipids are incorporated into the nanomatrix structure, in which natural rubber particles with an average diameter of 1 μm are dispersed in matrix of non-rubber components such as the proteins and phospholipids. The hierarchal structure realizes not only entropy elasticity but also energy elasticity. It creates new science and technology of rubber and opens new criteria of molecular and materials designs.

可塑剤をふくんだPVC製品を空気中で用いるときには可塑剤が蒸発揮散して劣化する. これの促進試験法をきめるための基礎として, 厚さ0.1mmのPVCフィルムを空気中で60~100°Cに加熱したときの重量減について検討した. 可塑剤揮散には風速と温度の影響が著しいから, これらを正確に調節できる試験機を用いて寿命試験を行なうべきである. 風速の影響については更に検討を要する.

The spring bedded ring model has been widely used for structural analyses of tire deformations under quasi-static and dynamic loading. Analyses on spring constants in the radial, the lateral and the circumferential directions, denoted by Kr, Ks and Kt respectively, have been conducted previously, however, were confined to only static cases. In this paper, by solving the equilibrated configuration of radial tire sidewall under inflation perssure and centrifugal force, we obtain finite deformations due to various loadings at the sidwall end near the tread. Then, we determined non-linear spring constants of a rotating radial tire Kr, Ks and Kt, which are compared with the experimental results given by referred papers.

Vehicle dynamics and tire mechanics have been independently researched in each area. Therefore, the relation-ship between vehicle performances and tire design parameters has not been theoretically constructed. This study has built up a tire design methodology, based on the vehicle dynamics and the tire mechanics. The developed tire design methodology can clarify the relation between vehicle performances, tire characteristics, tire components, and tire design parameters, and is found useful.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is an engineering plastic which has features of both fluoropolymers and general-purpose plastics: chemical resistance, thermal stability, UV-resistance and melt processability. Because of its well-balanced features, it has been used in many fields such as electronic materials, hollow fiber, fishing lines, chemical piping, and lithium-ion batteries (LIB).Nowadays, PVDF is in high demand for LIB applications especially for electric vehicles. In the early days of LIB, PVDF was utilized as binding agent for cathode and anode because of its excellent electrochemical stability and good adhesion performance to electrode materials. The applications of PVDF in LIB have been expanded to gel-electrolyte and coated separator films for the improvement of safety and reliability of battery cells. In this article, recent work on lithium-ion dynamics in PVDF based gel-electrolyte is introduced in addition to general information of PVDF and its application for LIB.

The required performances of tires have been changed with the progress of vehicle technology and surrounding environment. The vehicle industry faces the big change of the so-called “CASE”; Connected, Autonomous, Shares/Service, and Electric. The future tire may not be changed drastically compared with a vehicle, but the performances related to the environment such as rolling resistance and tire noise will be more important than before. Considering the environments surrounding tires, future passenger tires may be classified into five categories: i) Inexpensive pneumatic tire; ii) Expensive pneumatic tire with low aspect ratio which is specialized for performances such as run flat, maneuverability, riding comfort, or etc.; iii) Downsized pneumatic tire with high air pressure which drastically improves both RR and tire noise; iv) Air less tire for small and low speed mobility vehicle; v) Intelligent tire.

The design of the tire construction is a process that a part is changed, added or deleted from a tire. There is no comprehensive analytical theory for tire construction due to the complexity. But one procedure for the mechanics of tire construction is the numerical method that the finite element method is combined with the optimization method using a genetic algorithm or other techniques. The design of belt and bead construction for conventional tires, as well as sidewall, wheel construction and the structure inside a tire for run-flat tires and silent tires will be discussed in this paper.

Controlling domain structure, filler network and their boundary in nanometer and micrometer scale is necessary for development of new generation materials. Not only visualizing their morphology, also quantifying mechanical properties is important for understanding of relationship between molecular structure and bulk properties. This article provides an overview of some techniques for measuring mechanical properties using atomic force microscopy/scanning probe microscopy. Cantilever-based indentation can be used to obtain elastic modulus by assuming contact mechanics. Conventional phase imaging in tapping mode provides information about loss tangent. A bimodal AM-FM technique has advantages for fast and high-resolution imaging of elastic and dissipative properties.
